she's anti-abortion, though she doesn't support laws that restrict women's access to abortion

She's actually not super clear on that from what I've seen

america is funny man, literally one of the only left wing opinion writers in a major paper in the country and she's pro-life, hoo boy

i 'like' her but yes the trad cath thing creeps me out no matter what
at a guess i think she keeps herself distant from the pro-life movement as it exists, but re: laws about such i'm p sure her preferred legal regime is basically alien to the world as it is in toto. when she says she's a christian and not a liberal she's not kidding.
― goole, Tuesday, 10 July 2018 22:17 (five years ago) link
Imo she's never adequately dealt with the question of whether abortion should be legal in a socialist society. I appreciate the economic angle (it's bad when material conditions make having a kid prohibitive) but there are so many other reasons people have abortions!

Listening to the Red Scare ep, she's explaining her position, refers to the moment of conception as when "another actor enters the picture" OK i get it now gtfo

i really don't believe in calling people out or cancelling them etc. or with people on the left being super fucking cops about purity but man reproductive rights are just sort of the baseline

Anna asked Liz about abortion in cases of rape or incest... Liz literally said "that's really hard. the third actor in that circumstance, the child isn't responsible for what happened..." Fuuuuuck you!!
Ok I get it now lol

I respect pro-lifers who think "rape and incest" exemptions are bullshit more than the rest - if you're pro-life and believe that personhood begins at conception then how does the manner in which the person is conceived matter?
― louise ck (milo z), Tuesday, 10 July 2018 22:31 (five years ago) link
so are miscarriages ... involuntary manslaughter?
the whole "life begins at conception" tack is arbitrary and stupid. I suppose consistency can be admired in and of itself but the baseline position it stems from is illogical, based in religious dogma, and socially harmful.
― Οὖτις, Tuesday, 10 July 2018 22:33 (five years ago) link
Pro-lifers in general are monstrous but I'd rather deal with one who's logically consistent.
― louise ck (milo z), Tuesday, 10 July 2018 22:34 (five years ago) link

― flappy bird, Tuesday, 10 July 2018 22:36 (five years ago) link
Which is more appealing to the population that isn't as extremist as I am about reproductive rights - soft pro-lifers who'll carve out exemptions/focus on bullshit like 'partial birth abortions' or someone who just point blank says no to all of it?
― louise ck (milo z), Tuesday, 10 July 2018 22:39 (five years ago) link

Conservative/traditionalist Catholics are the most comprehensible and intellectually consistent kind of conservative afaict, and mostly they seem to advocate these days for a withdrawal from political life, which is better than working for the reestablishment of Western Christendom

PodDamnAmerica - Matt Christman's Softcore HistoryIn possibly our most ambitious audio experiment to date, we invite Matt Christman from Chapo Trap House to chart a history of Liberalism and American politics. What is it? Where did it go wrong? How does it fit into a star wars analogy? There's also a good 10 minutes on the upcoming Ozyfest music festival featuring headlining act Hillary Clinton. The Aum Shinrikyo death cult comes up at the beginning. I don't know we talk about all kinds of shit, it's a big one.

They were pretty damn reactionary in their Israel episode - a lot of talk about how cultural differences need to be acknowledged that sounded straight out of the European anti-refugee rhetoric handbook.

Yep. That was strike one, abortion the second, and this was the third. (Oh, there was also the "retard" thing but that honestly paled in comparison.) I was willing to be a little more patient because it was great to hear a dude-free 'cast but it really got to be intolerable.

Khachiyan is very smart but gives the impression she has next to no experience of the world, outside a Brooklyn art scene she hates 99.9% of the other people in.
There was a Twitter thread from last year about how Greek culture is fundamentally antithetical to capitalism (and better for it) based on the owner of a cafe (who was probably fiddling taxes, tbh) giving her sister a discount for paying for a coffee in cash that was so mortifying i could have self-combusted. It's not a huge surprise she likes Nassim Taleb so much.
― Wag1 Shree Rajneesh (ShariVari), Monday, 16 July 2018 16:13 (five years ago) link
khachiyan is not very smart, but she is very good at zeroing in on a target and utterly destroying them. this is not because of any kind of brilliance or wit, but because she rejects the scruples and principles that the rest of left-twitter-world takes for granted, so she is free to really lay into someone in that slimy and ruthless way that is more common among sam hyde types. the kind of person that, if she hadnt grown up in a metropolitan-left milieu and thus felt a gut-level identification with "leftism," would definitely reject all this stuff and describe herself as some kind of "paleoconservative"
so, I guess I dont like her
