The PYHSTA&DNTP thread is an amazing tone poem of shade and tough love that rolls on for years. This poll is trying to make the forest all about the trees.

I suspect most people are talking here about the "second thought" thread, but I think the "things you just don't care about" thread, the "Things you had second thoughts about posting to the 'Things you just don't care about' thread," and the "admin log watch" thread all qualify, and they are kinda different.

Personally I think not knowing where the beef stems from is kinda the point. I like not knowing, and like Tombot says I enjoy viewing it as a tone poem. To me it's venting space; when people simply relocate the argument to the meta-thread it defeats the purpose of the meta-thread.

To those like Sgt. Biscuits who would say "just don't post them at all," I would say: point taken, but on another level, pretty much everything here is superfluous; it's all a voluntary leisure activity.

To me the meta-thread post is roughly equivalent to the rhetorical device known as apophasis (mentioning something by saying you won't mention it) or maybe aposiopesis (starting to say something but leaving it unfinished and inviting the reader to infer the rest).

OTOH I am so totally not Board Police, and the one time I tried (lamely) to assert that a discussion conflicted with a thread's purpose I was quickly (and rightly) chided for it.

q: are you hoping that whoever you're responding to sees it or doesn't?

Roberto Spiralli, Saturday, 14 July 2018 00:38 (five years ago) link

a: I suspect for some meta-thread posters, the thrill of it is not knowing whether the poster will see it and recognize him or herself, or not. It's a bit Russian-roulettish.

ok, so kind of like saying something under your breath?

Roberto Spiralli, Saturday, 14 July 2018 00:55 (five years ago) link

Yes, or somewhat passive-aggressive argument tactics like "you know what you did," "you know who you are," and "if you don't understand what's wrong I'm not going to help you."

I suspect there have been zings against me that I didn't even recognize as such, and I'm okay with that.

there’s a lot of things I could say right now that I’m not gonna say
