On a slight digression, having been browsing quite a lot of old threads recently, I think 2001 - 2004 was peak ilxor. It was friendly, intelligent, sociable, interesting, sociable, fast-moving and people had more interesting and cute problems (eg crap jobs, flat sharing/room mates, travel on a budget). And there was a greater insight into peoples' off-board lives which i miss.

xp Okay, thank you both for your time on the "Reasons to leave ILX" thread - it's a fine display, the judges can't fail to appreciate it. Who's next on the ticket?

what’s to lose except being called out as a white supremacist
I am running the place?!

― the late great, Thursday, 9 August 2018 09:31 (five years ago) link
so why have you picked calling me a white supremacist your hill to die on?
why not just apologize and move on?
― the late great, Thursday, 9 August 2018 09:32 (five years ago) link
it should of course be obvious why i would pick not being a white supremacist as my hill to die on
― the late great, Thursday, 9 August 2018 09:33 (five years ago) link
you could even just sidestep the issue and apologize for wounding my fragile ego
― the late great, Thursday, 9 August 2018 09:34 (five years ago) link
the punchline is that they've run out of new jokes to tell because they're stuck in prison. so they've memorized and numbered all of the jokes. so someone just says a number and everyone remembers the joke and laughs.― the late great, Thursday, August 9, 2018 8:14 AM (one hour ago) Bookmark Flag Post Permalink

― Mark G, Thursday, 9 August 2018 09:38 (five years ago) link
Tlg I didn't know that an apology was all that you were looking for. I will need to look at that thread later to remember exactly but iirc I found what you said very offensive, as did others.
― xyzzzz__, Thursday, 9 August 2018 09:57 (five years ago) link
that’s fine
i don’t need u to tell me what was offensive
i need u to tell me what makes me a white supremacist
― the late great, Thursday, 9 August 2018 09:59 (five years ago) link
i’m not mad at anybody else because no one else did that
i found other responses on that thread thought provoking and somewhat persuasive
the argument that the snipers were committing murder by refysing the moral imperative to not shoot, thus making the protestors actions not suicide, for example, resonated with me
― the late great, Thursday, 9 August 2018 10:02 (five years ago) link
your response - petty name calling - also resonated with me, as you can see
― the late great, Thursday, 9 August 2018 10:03 (five years ago) link
really you just picked a bad name to call me
and don’t hide behind other ilxors

if you’re such a righteous dude that you’re sure a peek in the archives will cleanly vindicate you then surely you’re a righteous enough dude just to apologize for hurting my feelings and move on. honestly, it won’t change the balance in the mideast, but it’ll make a difference to this middle easterner *eyes swell w tears*

xp to Luna, would've liked to be around at "peak ilxor"
but the threads I enjoy are still good, and tbh I often find some of the old threads kinda weird

we need to determine the actual eras in a pre-poll thread then it must be time for another official vote surely

note that back then (when i was introduced to this place) we were all 100% anonymous if we wanted to be and the accretions of personal animus manifested and were discharged way differently

this is honestly one major reason I don't post more -- I've said this many times before but unless someone is using their real name I have zero idea who they are (the changing display names don't help), let alone the near-20 years of contextual detritus around them that everybody else seems to know

I came on in I think 2006 so I guess I just missed ‘peak ilxor’ but I honestly enjoy it more now than during those first few years I was here. Yes it was super dynamic but there was also a lot of mean jock bullshit which I do not fuckin miss at all. Can’t deal with FB or Twitter at all anymore, this is the little patch of civilization I’m clinging to.

i don't understand the mindset that leads one to say "this message board used to be better". obviously ilx did used to be better before i started posting, but it's such a broad and vague statement i can't take it as meaningful. i have specific grievances with many of the regular posters here which i keep to myself because who fucking cares, i feel bad when i post something and nobody responds at all, not even to make fun of it, i feel bad when i post something and somebody only responds to make fun of it, i understand "there are more interesting discussions on twitter", but "used to be better"? like i'm going to go back and read posts from 2006 in reruns? personally i find how i feel about ilx is highly dependent on my mood at the time. if i'm super depressed ilx is shit because everything is shit. if i'm not super depressed ilx is a decent time-waste and good chance to read and post about things i don't generally get the chance to talk about.
anyway if i ever leave ilx it will probably be a result of some sort of contract dispute.

it's not looking good, you guys

probably because it feels like a club house, or a country club, where it's the same 5-6 posters (obv. i'm insane, over-generalising) referencing in-jokes half the time, and lack of content (pertinent to my interests), i suppose. for example, a fantastic aphex twin video / song drops, and people are ultra-ultra-blasé, almost like it's an inconvenience "I can't be arsed", "This is paint-by-numbers AFX", "My son made me replay the whole thing" etc. - obv. not EVERYBODY/// but, fucking *yawn*, i'm an ignorant / sleep-deprived asshole. the "vibe" isn't one of excitement, or earnestness.. it feels more like "oh, you again" ... it doesn't feel so inclusive, i suppose. more like a clique of cranky fucks. it definitely felt more fresh and exciting during the early-mid 00s, but what Arch Bacon said^^

Same goes for Aphex tbh (sorry). I recall ILM was good recently picking through the brilliant new batch of AE tunes, and you joined in enthusiastically iirc.

ILX was good for about a week and a half in 2008. I've hated every grueling second I've spent here since. But I'm never leaving.
Never.

I know two original noize dudes that still post at least a couple of times a month.
Early-mid 2000s seemed peak because there was a FAP seemingly all the time or people hung out or aim'd late at night a lot. Like, some of those mean jokes I think may have only appeared mean because it was people who knew each other in real life play fighting.
