I don't think I've seen Al St John in his western sidekick phase, just in silent comedies (often with Roscoe and Buster).

And while Walter Brennan was never a leading man, he won three Oscars! Not a typo.

Brennan played a number of other nasties in his career, just not in his most popular roles.
I just think of Jon McIntire as the sheriff who has no idea what's up with Norman Bates.

Gotta be Elam.
― WmC, Friday, 7 September 2018 17:33 (five years ago) link
Elam was great, loved him in the non-western Kansas City Confidential too (alongside Neville Brand and Lee Van Cleef as a trio of extremely bad dudes.)
Slim Pickens was incredible obviously, a lot better and deeper than his acting persona might suggest. Particularly enjoyed his small sad role in Pat Garrett and Billy the Kid.
Ward Bond was one of the few actors who could hold the screen equally with John Wayne in the films they shared (23 of them!), and he had a lot of really great moments in The Searchers in particular.
Strother Martin, L.Q. Jones, and Ben Johnson I always associate with The Wild Bunch, and they're all *incredible* in that. The former pair are so gleefully unhinged and funny, while Johnson is just his usual cool customer while coming off as extremely dangerous and not to be trifled with. Just cuts a super-imposing figure throughout. Obviously there's more to these guys than that film, so many legendary performances among them especially Martin and Johnson (and Jones' superb small role in Casino.) Also without checking every single wiki page, I think Jones might be the only one on this list who's still alive?
And Edmond O'Brien is in The Wild Bunch too of course -- it's unbelievable that it's the same guy who was in DOA.

I'm just watching The Wild Bunch now! (fell asleep during it last night. not that it wasn't holding my interest). Don't know why it took me so long.
― A True White Kid that can Jump (Granny Dainger), Friday, 7 September 2018 17:55 (five years ago) link
Edmond O'Brien is also in the "new" Orson Welles film.
I don't think of Ward Bond exclusively with even the Ford westerns... he's in everything from Dead End to It's a Wonderful Life. (also a rabid Red-baiting asshole IRL)
By the time i became aware of Elam, he was parodying his earlier roles (eg Support Your Local Sheriff)
personally gotta go with Andy

lol my first exposure to Devine was his voiceover work in Disney's Robin Hood. It wasn't until much later that all the western-isms in that movie registered with me (Roger Miller!)
anyway, this thread inspired by last night's viewing of the Culpepper Cattle Company (which I don't think actually featured any of these ppl but you know)

I've never seen that one, but Royal Dano is in it! (another western fixture who showed up in Twin Peaks)

lol I don't know if I have ever actually seen Walter Brennan in anything. Obviously he was in a *ton* of stuff but my knowledge of pre-50s westerns is p sketchy

I've read that a possible reason for WB winning three Oscars is that he rose from the ranks of extras, and so many of the Academy voters were extras who were happy to vote for "one of their own"

yes, he said he was embarrassed by how he won them.
Shakey, at least see To Have and Have Not, My Darling Clementine, Rio Bravo and Support Your Local Sheriff!

I'm sure I've seen Rio Bravo on tv but don't remember much about it apart from Dean Martin's singing scene(s) lol
the others are on my (admittedly long) list

Annoyed that I missed this poll. My dad was roommates with R.G. Armstrong in college and I absolutely would have tossed Armstrong a vote.

Most recently saw him in Stay Hungry, one of his juiciest roles! Just about steals the film.
