They're never going to do a watch with an always-visible time, are they? Fuck.

All I know is if they ever make an iOS release incompatible with the SE, and don’t update the SE, I’m outie.

Ugh you can’t buy an SE direct from Apple anymore, fuckin whatever dude.

Macs TK

I honestly feel nothing for any products Apple makes these days, I’m not mad or anything it’s all just at a stable equilibrium and design differentiators are basically impossible, since all anyone wants is things built on the same lines as the products Apple introduced 2003-2007. They are still dragging their heels on a MacBook based on an Apple-designed ARM SoC and that irritates me a bit.

faculty w1fe (silby), Wednesday, 12 September 2018 19:11 (five years ago) link

Shit, maybe I better grab one before it's too late. My 5s will be 5 years old in December. xp

love how they used the planet image on the newer and pricier options so it's juuuuuust out of the way of the notch, attempting to fool us into believing maybe it's not there.

Speaking for myself but I can't help but imagine there are many other people like me: the thought of switching to another OS is terrifying/paralyzing. I have used Apple all my life. Used Windows XP when I was in HS but that's it. Ever since his death the company has totally stagnated and failed to invent or introduce anything truly exciting. I use Apple products but I'm not a super fan, like I couldn't care less about the watch. All of their products keep getting worse too, in different ways. But I can't switch.

flappy bird, Wednesday, 12 September 2018 22:25 (five years ago) link

I still balk at the idea of paying $1k for a friggin' phone. Also don't quite understand the difference in the X tiers

Nhex, Wednesday, 12 September 2018 22:29 (five years ago) link

I borrowed one of the fancy new Dell Windows laptops for a week to see if I could get along with it - god, it still sucked so much. All the things I hate about OS X (notifications, handoffs) combined with an absolutely miserable trackpad.

I think I'd be fine with one of the 'pure' Android phones without any of the Samsung overlay bullshit but there's not really any enticement to switch (nor any enticement to switch to a new iPhone, tho).

maybe computers and phones are basically just this until they get superseded by things that render computers and phones obsolete. welcome to the information appliance age.

Paleo Weltschmerz (El Tomboto), Wednesday, 12 September 2018 22:37 (five years ago) link

When my dad died I inherited his almost new iPad, this is the device I find most useless of everything I've owned. The screen's pretty but it's awkward to type on, more awkward to play games on than a phone, uncomfortable to hold for reading books.

Total found uses: drum machine+synth apps, reading comics. For something that probably cost $900 new.

louise ck (milo z), Wednesday, 12 September 2018 22:40 (five years ago) link

the apps for music making are a pretty compelling reason to get an iPad, though never for $900 imo... like, anything as much or less than an SP-404 makes sense.

flappy bird, Wednesday, 12 September 2018 22:49 (five years ago) link

i have to use ipads for work (including keyboard covers) and they're just awkward. they need a flat surface to sit on, the keyboards aren't great at all for typing, and phones do pretty much the same thing most of the time.

calamity gammon (Autumn Almanac), Wednesday, 12 September 2018 22:56 (five years ago) link

WHY DO YOU NEED A CAPS LOCK BUTTON

I’m on the iPhone upgrade program so I’ll get a new XSMAX. I don’t think I have a need for 512 GB tho. Current have 256 and only use about 100 gigs. I don’t expect I’ll start shooting a lot of 4K video or whatever would fill that up.

Jeff, Thursday, 13 September 2018 09:36 (five years ago) link

flappy bird on my chromebook you can change the search icon button (which is where the caps lock should be) to work as caps lock (somewhere in settings)

niels, Thursday, 13 September 2018 10:30 (five years ago) link

How long reasonably can I keep my SE alive? I have absolutely no interest in any phones Apple made after and I’m frankly debating if I even want to continue with them period (I imagine if I get an Android phone I’ll immediately regret it).

One bad call from barely losing to (Alex in SF), Thursday, 13 September 2018 11:58 (five years ago) link

ios 12 has done lots of performance stuff to improve older devices, but I'd imagine iOS 13 will spunk all that away.

stet, Thursday, 13 September 2018 12:19 (five years ago) link

Android is a non-starter for me; I should buy an SE just to keep as a backup just in case this one craps out and they refuse to repair it for love or money.

faculty w1fe (silby), Thursday, 13 September 2018 13:24 (five years ago) link

yeah I’m thinking of getting a spare se also and figuring I’ll be on iOS 12 until 2025, what else is a smartphone gonna do before then but stream #content at 69G

I have trouble with this too. Also I imagine there are a lot of younger people who are just growing up used to wireless and don't care enough about the improved sound from the wired connection. Today's pop music is p much designed for shitty audio anyway.

Fedora Dostoyevsky (man alive), Thursday, 13 September 2018 14:28 (five years ago) link

are there good sounding wireless headphones yet? my dad gave me a very shitty sounding pair of pretty generic ones. I don’t want airpods bc the wired apple phones don’t fit my ears well; I love my 30 € sennheisers wired ones with rubber tips.

I disagree with the part about not paying $900 for one. I bought an iPad Pro last year. It was a lot of money for me - it was a purchase that I considered for a long time, and so far I have zero regrets. There seems to be an endless supply of innovative music apps. It seems like every few months someone drops a new app that changes how I approach everything. The downside of this is that I feel like I am constantly in learning mode, but it has helped me get closer to what I consider to be the perfect workflow. The touch screen is perfect for music software - gets you closer to "knob twiddling" than using a mouse on a desktop. I also use it for drawing and there are some top notch apps for that as well. The biggest concern I have is that the device is going to be outdated before I feel I've fully gotten its value.

Sir, I must know, do batteries do well in the cold?

Sir, I can no longer wait, tell me what the hiking trails are for the reefs in the US Virgin Islands

i didn't mention congaree, which i actually like, but many people dismiss as just a big swamp. for comparison, compare the number of trails available in congarees in alltrails with those available in, say, glacier:

anyway i don't really agree with pp's criticism but i understand where it's coming from. this is a feature that is much more likely to be dreamt up in cupertino than in hoboken. but as a parks guy i think it's cool and welcome it. and it gave me an excuse to talk a bit about congaree, which has a mosquito meter.

when america is put on the scale and judged by the angel of history, i think it will be known for making two contributions to the sum of all good things in the world:

-public stewardship of public lands, and
-baseball.

everything else america has done has been a net drag on the world, an oily putrescence, an abscess in the brain. the decline of the empire cannot happen soon enough.

i mean we can argue about origins given any number of factors but you’re missing some pretty big musical gifts to the world…

I have at least a dozen lines of criticism about national parks, the origins of the entire environmental movement, the Department of the Interior, and unequal access along usual race and class lines. Who has the ability to take time off from work and go somewhere where they'll need an offline hiking map on their phone?

I love the parks. I love hiking. I'm really happy that a National Monument moved in up the street from me last month. I think smartphones in general have affected who is doing what out in the backcountry and all the apps: AllTrails, Peakery, TripAdvisor, etc. have amplified all that long before Apple finally getting around to building in hiking maps.

My prediction is that more people will sacrifice themselves on Mount Baldy and search and rescue will go above and beyond to get them out of trouble.

Channel Islands is the absolute worst national park in the USA:

1 hour ferry slog through often rough, open water
Islands are absolutely plastered in rat/seal/pelican shit
The surrounding water is insanely treacherous and a great white feeding zone

lol they pulled a classic apple deal with openai and pitched the integration as an opportunity for openai to sell subscriptions. it’s sounding like apple paid $0 and probably implemented the integration as a pluggable framework meaning they can offer other engines or replace them at any moment
