I have seen two (2) of these films, and decline to choose between them on the grounds that the poll is racist

I vote for the one where Jim Belushi cheats on his wife with Rene Russo just because he’s living in an alternate reality.

I half-watched the Mortal Kombat movie with the volume quite low recently; I recommend that.

omg, the "you can't handle the truth" impersonation in the Misery Brothers is just so, so bad

Karl Malone, Thursday, 15 November 2018 00:18 (five years ago) link

Have seen 1 and 3/4 of these. Walked out of Exit to Eden about 3/4 through, so that means Encino Man is the winner.

Josefa, Thursday, 15 November 2018 00:49 (five years ago) link

I saw Beethoven, Forrest Gump, Freejack, The Jerky Boys: The Movie, Ladybugs, Mr. Destiny, Richie Rich and Taking Care of Business in theatres, and Ghost Dad at the drive-in (as a double feature with Bird on a Wire, which would have fit right in with this batch). Of those, I remember actually kind of enjoying Ladybugs and Taking Care of Business at the time, though I don't imagine that I'll make any effort to see either of them again. I would argue in my defence that 1990-1995 covers ages 11-16 for me, but in the same span I also went to theatres to see Dick Tracy, Gremlins 2: The New Batch, Die Hard 2: Die Harder, L.A. Story, The Naked Gun 2 1/2: The Smell of Fear, Terminator 2: Judgement Day, Wayne's World, Death Becomes Her, Unforgiven, Matinee, Groundhog Day, Jurassic Park, In the Line of Fire, The Fugitive, The Age of Innocence, Schindler's List, Pulp Fiction, Die Hard With a Vengeance, Se7en, Leaving Las Vegas and Toy Story, so its not like I was unable to distinguish good Hollywood product from bad. More likely it was a time in my life when going to see a movie--any movie--was a treat, and a lot of the time I was at the mercy of whatever friends or family wanted to see (I can't imagine that I will ever end up willingly seeing a worse movie The Jerky Boys in my lifetime).

But yeah, that's a pretty depressing list. Very few of those movies even manage to be awesomely bad in that way that is catnip to bad movie lovers (and of the ones that are, I'd very much include Forrest Gump alongside Nothing But Trouble and possibly Exit to Eden). They're just bland, forgettable mush.

TBF, that's pretty much exactly what I was going for.

My mother set great store by that microwave oven! (Old Lunch), Thursday, 15 November 2018 01:14 (five years ago) link

This era is replete with both great + seminal flicks that form a large part of my cultural foundation and amazing cheese that was likewise formative. And I intentionally excluded some of the movies I disliked the most because I thought they might find some defenders. Was mostly looking to poll the cinematic equivalent of an unpleasantly moist and flavorless slice of bread.

that trailer for The Misery Brothers is the most appalling-looking thing I’ve seen in my life. There were so many atrocious comedies like that made in the early ‘90s that littered your average Blockbuster.

omar little, Thursday, 15 November 2018 01:43 (five years ago) link

U may be right calstars, further reflection reveals I may be saddled with more fragments of that movie than I would care to be

I have seen around two thirds of these. This is the type of garbage I'd rent on VHS as a tween or young teen.

I've seen/read some savage takedowns of it recently, but I haven't watched BABY'S DAY OUT since I was a kid and boy, me and my sister rented that on the regular and watched it maybe 30 times. So I voted for it.

I did a lot of work to get this under fifty options

Be honest, you went with the lowest-rated films on IMDb or Rotten Tomatoes, didn't you?

Of the few movies on this list I have seen, several of them were because my then-boyfriend wanted to rent them. That's not THE reason he's my ex, but it certainly didn't weigh in his favor.

I actually did scour through lists of films in compiling this hand-picked list. Never underestimate my commitment to a completely ridiculous endeavor that most reasonable people would consider a waste of time and energy.

I will grant that the presence of Grodin (who's in at least a few of these things) might elevate a movie which would otherwise be a pile of irredeemable garbage.

(Almost completely off the topic at hand because it's a fantastic movie, but I'd say that Grodin's role in The Great Muppet Caper is among the top five comic performances of the '80s.)

Fun fact about Freejack: among its cast is tenor saxophonist/composer George Coleman, former sideperson for Miles Davis, Max Roach, Jimmy Smith, and many others.

we live in a timeline where Dollman vs. Demonic Toys is real, but Mr. Doubtfire is not.

voted Freejack, which I haven't seen, because that bit where Estevez slams his in-car video-call closed but it pops open again for 1 second so Jagger can laugh at him is better than any 1-second bit in Performance

It's unfair, I know, but I would be disappointed to discover that his Freejack character didn't berate the poor for being lazy.
