I took a lot of drugs between the ages of 16-20 and had lots of bad experiences. pot, coke, acid, shrooms, mescaline, ecstacy. Haven't touched any of them in 8 years. I continued drinking and smoking though but have drastically cut down on the drinking.

c) Using non-ridiculous drugs the way the average person uses alcohol -- i.e., in appropriate settings, at appropriate times, and not to the extent that the actual business of living gets interrupted -- strikes me as a perfectly reasonable thing to do. So feel free to make fun of High Times subscribers, but don't generalize too much.

As always, Nitsuh is so OTM.

Don't knock it until you've tried it. You are never too old for occasional recreational drug use (should the appropriate occasion present itself)

smee (smee), Monday, 3 February 2003 16:27 (twenty-one years ago) link

cigarettes - yes, still.
alcohol - yes, but infrequent due to lack of friends to socialize with.
marijuana - sporadically. the first few times I smoked, I had some very strange experiences. The last few times have been more uneventful. Marijuana makes me incredibly selfish now. All I want to do is listen to Bukem and play video games. I can't imagine that I am any fun to be around while stoned.
others - depending on which "other"; never or not yet.

In general I am very careful for a number of reasosn. I have alcoholic relatives. Some of my best freinds have messed up their lives. Some of my best friends have friends who have OD'ed and died.

aside from the occasional alcoholic or caffeinated drink, i try to avoid any real chemical intake whether narcotic or pharmaceutical.

why? i like myself the way i am. i see no reason to alter my reality/behavior/judgement chemically.

Used to smoke a little pot; then way too much pot; then tried to occasionally smoke a little again, but it wasn't any good. Now I haven't smoked anything for a few years. With my allergies and sensitive sinuses, it was really a stupid thing to do to begin with, though I'll never know whether or not my couple of pot-head years actually may have helped me get through a time I might otherwise not have gotten through.

Occasional alcohol. Would consider trying more psychedelics somewhere down the line, but no plans.

Rockist Scientist, Monday, 3 February 2003 17:18 (twenty-one years ago) link

Haven't smoked pot in years.

Had periods of my life involving heavy social drinking, but currently have the tolerance of an infant; half a beer and I'm ready to fall asleep.

Never tried any other recreational drugs. To be honest, I'm probably too skittish (not to mention too old) for most of 'em.

I do like caffeine, and sometimes I take Benadryl for allergies.

If I hadn't been a crackhead then I wouldn't be writing THE GREATEST FUCKING AMERICAN NOVEL OF THE 21ST CENTURY MOTHERFUCKERS.

I have never done heroin or speed... I liked cocaine and painkillers very much but now I just say no. Never liked pot or psychedelics.

Daniel_Rf (Daniel_Rf), Monday, 3 February 2003 23:13 (twenty-one years ago) link

two weeks pass...
Before I read this, I figured almost everyone had smoked herb previously or would still do so sporadically. Is it just the area where I live (Chicago)?
My best friend is a major pothead and for years he tried to convince me that his dad smoked too. I refused to believe him and thought he was crazy, but recently we've got undeniably proof from several sources. I think this may be part of the reason why I think everyone smokes. I was so sure his dad didn't smoke...now I never put it out of the realm of possibilities that someone does.
Plus, I've had so many people I don't know ask me for weed or mention it (gas station attendants, fast food workers, friends' co-workers). This is strange considering that I don't look like a hippie or anything and wasn't even stoned for most of the encounters.
Of the three people with whom I've discussed it with, all three say that nearly everyone at their work partakes in the ganja.
I honestly don't know anyone under 30 who has never smoked it. Hell, I don't know anyone under 30 who hasn't smoked recently. Part of it is the people I hang out with (slacker musicians), but many of the people I'm talking about are not even in my circle of friends.
Even the preppies/jocks when I was in high school did it.

Heh, I yammered on and on about drugs last night on AIM. I occasionally smoke pot, and very rarely (but sometimes) do more than that. I've never tried ecstasy (would), crack (wouldn't) or heroin (wouldn't), but just about everything else I've done at least once.

during the ages of 14-17 i pretty much did everything i could, except for crack. i don't anymore, but pot sometimes makes its way into my life and i tend not to turn it down for all those normal addictive personalities reasons

jess (dubplatestyle), Friday, 21 February 2003 20:51 (twenty-one years ago) link

Senior year in high school I smoked pot every day. Almost always after school, but occasionally we'd go out for a toke during lunch. I don't touch it anymore, but more power to anyone that enjoys it. The sanctimonious anti-drug advertising on TV makes me nauseous. I've probably done LSD/mushrooms maybe 10 times, but again no longer have any use for it.

Tried ecstasy a couple times and I enjoyed it. It's been years, but I might consider it again if offered. I still drink way, way too much. It's something I'm trying to work on. Really my favorite thing is painkillers, vicodin, valium, etc. Nice relaxing effect without any hangover. Hard to get though.

I have this theory where certain drugs connect to certain kinds of music.

In this theory:
Pot connects to Reggae
Alcohol connects to Rock
Speed connects to Punk
E connects to House

But what about coke and heroin. Do they connect to music?

Andrew L (Andrew L), Sunday, 23 February 2003 09:56 (twenty-one years ago) link

I've smoked weed with my mom! And I gave it to her, not the other way around. ha.
It's complete bullshit to say that drugs (I guess I mean doja, mostly) make anyone on them stupid and boring! There've been plenty of times when I haven't been high that I've noticed that some people kind've bloom when they smoke. Like, there's a certain kind of intelligent introvert that just opens up and becomes a really interesting conversationalist high, when normally you won't be able to get two words out of them all night.
Sure, a lot of people act/talk stupid when they're stoned, but most of those people are just barely able to cover up their stupidity when straight anyway.
Oh, damn, and you know, the people who are the most fucking annoying when they're doing drugs are the ones who usually never do them; 'cause they make a big production out of it and then if they don't like it they always have to really over-play that, coughing and sputtering and being all like "oh god I'm so high I'm having an attack I need to go to the hospital!!!" after one hit when it's obviously a completely bullshit play for attention.

Dan I., Sunday, 23 February 2003 10:34 (twenty-one years ago) link

I was vehemently anti-drugs/drink till two weeks before I turned 21, by which point I realized that I was insanely curious and that was what was making me such a fucking tightass about it. (n.b. I am not accusing anyone who doesn't take drugs or drink of being a tightass, I'm saying I was, big-time.) I also know my own personality (obsessive-compulsive, as anyone who's seen my lists is aware) and figured I just wouldn't do them very much, and I haven't. also, I've just never been offered them all that often, which has helped. I've smoked pot a fair amount (it doesn't do a hell of a lot for me most of the time, though that probably has to do with the lousy weed most of my coworkers/friends got than anything), taken acid twice, done coke three or four times (nice, but not long-lasting enough for me, though I have a couple friends who love the stuff), done E twice (favorite by far), and done mushrooms probably two dozen times. I LOVE mushrooms.

''Alcohol connects to Rock''

alcohol that is connected to rock is mostly garbage. Rock that is connected to LSD and speed is the best stuff.

but then of course how do you explain the fact that Fushitsusha don't take drugs and yet have made some of the most fantastic psych rock recordings ever.

Don't have theories Jan.

the love/curiosity about coke and heroin on this thread (either for the poster or their pals) is beyond belief to me...having done both of them, i can honestly say that they're the cheapest, most horrible high ever (at least in terms of what i've poisoned myself with over the years), perhaps second only to inhaling things

jess (dubplatestyle), Sunday, 23 February 2003 21:22 (twenty-one years ago) link

well if coke and heroin don't do it for you, what does? you must know you're in the minority calling the 2 giants of needle drugs "cheap and "horrible." quality is an important element, obviously.

Aaron A., Sunday, 23 February 2003 21:58 (twenty-one years ago) link

yeah, the Troggs recorded totally drug free or something like that.

I can't say I've found coke any less good than speed, personally. Less of a steep comedown too, in my comparatively limited experience. I don't think it's so much better to justify the expense, though.

Sean (Sean), Sunday, 23 February 2003 23:59 (twenty-one years ago) link

I smoked pot for the first time when I was 16, out of pure curiosity.
Also, I'd done my own research and determined that in moderate amounts
cannabis was not harmful, though I did not plan on making it a lifelong habit.

I did it 1-2 times per month over the course of that summer, and got
drunk about the same number of times. Then when I turned 17
my parents let me leave and go live with my best friend, who is
heavily into using pot. So I started doing it more and more, until
I was getting high every day - but only moderately so, I dosed
myself, I wasn't just sitting around all day, I was doing things like
writing, acting and playing music, alone or in various bands. It
didn't seem to interfere or impair me in any way, so I don't think
I was truly addicted, but who knows - addicts rarely recognize
their own status, do they?

Anyway, in early 2002 I turned eighteen, and this cleancut
preppy girl from my church decided to make me her 'project,'
(U know how it is - the 'good' girls are always attracted to the
'bad' boys)) and convinced me to quit using drugs if
she would become my girlfriend - seems like a vainglorious
gesture, but she was a stone fox, the best looking white
girl in our school, so i agreed. I almost immediately missed the
stuff, but after about a week I realized I was much more alert
and enjoying life more, overall, although I didn't get thoses
euphoric rushes that I was used to.

Well, the white girl moved away and I was left to my own devices, and
I resumed smoking pot, but only occasionally, mostly on weekends,
and i think it's a good balance; moderation is always better than
the extremes of hedonism or puritanism.

(As for other drugs, I never got into them they're mostly
too dangerous or, in the case of psychedelics, too dang MUCH.
I still trip about once a month)

Squrlplise (Squirrel_Police), Monday, 24 February 2003 03:40 (twenty-one years ago) link

P.S,
I think it was inevitable to me to start taking drugs,
since my parents were dead set against them.

squrlplice (Squirrel_Police), Monday, 24 February 2003 03:41 (twenty-one years ago) link

Nope - I've smoked pot and tried hash but wasn't particularly enamoured of either of the experiences. And the same for hard alcohol - I don't like the taste or the feeling. But I come from a family where there was drug usage and that may explain a lot of my aversion, in that I associated narcotics with bad memories.

I wanted to do a 'shroom trip, at one time, for the whole psychic awakening experience, but then one day I went by my mother's after college and my younger sister (high school seniors) and some of her girlfriends were there. As I walked in they were all giggling. Then my sister said "Hey, we just took some 'shrooms!" I was taken back, mainly because I thought that she was not experimenting. Anyway, about 45 minutes later, I was in the dining room and they came through looking for munchies. One of the girls made an odd noise and crumpled - I caught her on her way down and she went into a full-blown seizure. Thank god she came out of fairly fast, but it was still scary as hell.

And then, two years ago, I heard that a little boy that I used to babysit, had taken 'shrooms and had a bad reaction and died. Out of the blue. It was really a shock.

I am not at all against drugs, and am in favor of legalization. I would like to see regulation of the strength of drugs, and there to be less of a stigma in getting assistance when something goes wrong.
