i mean of course she was the next to join

imago, Thursday, 27 December 2018 17:54 (five years ago) link

Ha, Albert Broccoli spoiled me about that too because I was not feeling season 1 with You being in a car commercial for most of it.

Yerac, Thursday, 27 December 2018 17:55 (five years ago) link

I needed something to look forward to.

Yerac, Thursday, 27 December 2018 17:55 (five years ago) link

I assume too they are ending the current season because it seemed like a nightmare to have people commuting in to Tokyo all the time.

Yerac, Thursday, 27 December 2018 17:57 (five years ago) link

idk about Season One being bad - it's sort of amazing! i really don't think TH has been gifted a scenario as rich as failed firefighter and actual popstar's forbidden romance while avuncular older pair are the two actually getting down to it on the sly. even the two fifth wheels are good fun

imago, Thursday, 27 December 2018 18:01 (five years ago) link

Oh, I don't think it's bad. The music was a bit disconcerting and I kept waiting for the panel breaks so it was harder to get into a rhythm. I am somewhere in the mid teens in the episodes.

Yerac, Thursday, 27 December 2018 18:03 (five years ago) link

At least they got a better design of bedrooms down so they can film everyone at once now.

Yerac, Thursday, 27 December 2018 18:04 (five years ago) link

oh god the music lol

imago, Thursday, 27 December 2018 18:05 (five years ago) link

it is very weird having the entire show scored seemingly by a British indie kid

imago, Thursday, 27 December 2018 18:05 (five years ago) link

I really need to make an effort to get back into season 1 episodes this weekend.

Yerac, Thursday, 27 December 2018 18:06 (five years ago) link

Natsumi and Cheri seemed more aggressive to me, whereas the "scary" moments the current season seem more the result of social awkwardness and the apparent lack of social skills of a number of the members.
I was rooting for Taka though he made me cringe on a number of occasions.
I really like Yui.
I am not into watching these people skating, surfing, singing, so I might prefer the people who do "nothing" or whose jobs are not considered interesting/cool.
I would like to watch the first season but think I will miss the panel a lot.

MrDasher, Thursday, 27 December 2018 18:11 (five years ago) link

there may be a panel at some point. The first season goes on for 2 years or something.

Yerac, Thursday, 27 December 2018 18:21 (five years ago) link

I posted it upthread but yes, Boys & Girls Next Door is by far the best season (followed closely by BGitC). It spans two years, two houses & two dozen housemates... and yes, there's a panel for the majority of it.

And then... once the series ends, it dovetails straight into a 2 hour film sequel (Closing Doors).

But back to Opening New Doors, I'm not sure if it's in the current international release or the next one, but during the opening recap Yamasato gets really OTT faux-angry at app-bro and it's probably my favorite moment of the entire series thus far.

It's not *that* crazy of a commute by bullet train... esp compared to the season 1 commute which was perhaps a little longer?

Jersey Al (Albert R. Broccoli), Thursday, 27 December 2018 19:47 (five years ago) link

when do they ditch the british indie haha

imago, Thursday, 27 December 2018 19:49 (five years ago) link

xpost, didn't app guy ( I guess I should say Sota) say he commutes a little over 2 hours one way to work every day?

Yerac, Thursday, 27 December 2018 19:57 (five years ago) link

I have to say I was thrilled that the panel was begging for an eyeglass date because that is exactly how I felt.

Yerac, Thursday, 27 December 2018 20:01 (five years ago) link

The fact that they’re watching the episodes back a couple of days later in season 1 must have been seriously psychologically detrimental. Like in the new seasons they have a buffer of a few weeks to forget about and get over things and to review arguments from a humorous distance. The old way seems completely brutal in its immediacy.

It’s interesting to see Seina’s early missteps in modelling, knowing how successful she later becomes. Her fallibility makes her even more likeable.

tangenttangent, Thursday, 27 December 2018 20:33 (five years ago) link

Maybe I will try to watch the first season but I am kind of bad at watching tv so we'll see.
I love that people on Terrace House watch Terrace House and talk about being on Terrace House. I don't on like US reality shows when they can't mention the show even when it's clearly what they're really talking about.
I am curious about the status of some of the couples from other seasons, lke Taishi and Chikako.

MrDasher, Thursday, 27 December 2018 20:36 (five years ago) link

I want to know too! That couple seemed doomed tbh. Albert is a fountain of knowledge for this kind of thing.

tangenttangent, Thursday, 27 December 2018 20:41 (five years ago) link

Taishi & Chikako are still together (now married!) & vlogging:

http://www.youtube.com/channel/UChJTlso_SVU_R-v6VaX995w/videos?shelf_id=1&view=0&sort=dd

For older seasons, Franky & Andrew (non-TH member) are married. Not sure about Han-san.

For newer seasons: Tsubasa & Shion and Seina & Noah.

Jersey Al (Albert R. Broccoli), Thursday, 27 December 2018 21:00 (five years ago) link

Interesting. I was wondering how that would go, because Taishi seemed like he could be all about the fantasy and not the reality, or be one of those guys who gets super enthusiastic about a person/relationship, then abruptly becomes disillusioned and drops them. Maybe once he was secure in the relationship he relaxed, because on the show he seemed to put a lot of expectations on the person he was with, as to how she should react to things he did and so on...and just seemed kind of exhausting...well, good for them, I guess.

MrDasher, Thursday, 27 December 2018 21:25 (five years ago) link

Married! I don't know why I am so surprised, he seemed pretty focused. 18ish years ago we had a Japanese housemate from Kyushu (mentioned before) for two years while he was doing a postdoc and he randomly had a school friend come visit him where we lived in nowhere PA. Completely normal, basic visit. He went back to Japan after he finished up and they were married within 3 months.

Yerac, Thursday, 27 December 2018 21:27 (five years ago) link

Oh man... just when you thought this season was gonna be dull! Cliffhanger endings! Infighting! Sex! BTS Secrets! Good stuff coming your way.

Jersey Al (Albert R. Broccoli), Tuesday, 8 January 2019 04:40 (five years ago) link

Also if you like baseball (probably no one on this thread), Kenta Maeda (LA Dodgers pitcher) was the guest panelist on today's episode and he said that his wife went to a Halloween party in LA and Taishi (Guilty Samuria) was there and she took a picture with him and sent it to Maeda (who was pitching in the world series!) and he checked his phone and got super excited lollll

Jersey Al (Albert R. Broccoli), Tuesday, 8 January 2019 04:46 (five years ago) link

Finally got to the full panel for season 1. It's funny how quickly they all just clicked together.

Yerac, Tuesday, 8 January 2019 20:10 (five years ago) link

Ohhhhh, it starts getting amazing right around then. Dyki & Hana moved in ya?

Jersey Al (Albert R. Broccoli), Tuesday, 8 January 2019 21:32 (five years ago) link

Miwako is there already. I just read she is one of the most popular TH members (instagram followers).

Yerac, Tuesday, 8 January 2019 21:47 (five years ago) link

Oh damn, you're pretty far in then.

Miwako is great, she has a cute off-kilter smile. If you remember guest panelist Saito from Aloha State, they did some ads for glico together. As most people were I imagine, I was surprised to see them together on a pasted-up street ad:

four weeks pass...

And so it ends, kind of differently than you'd think. Some good news ahead for the next season though, don't want to spoil it but it should be a step up after the past 2 seasons.

Jersey Al (Albert R. Broccoli), Wednesday, 13 February 2019 05:21 (five years ago) link

one month passes...

I am reading way too much about this Enon/Becky scandal right now.

Yerac, Sunday, 17 March 2019 19:13 (five years ago) link

Maeda! is so tall. I can't believe they didn't put out a huge ass armchair for him.

Yerac, Monday, 18 March 2019 00:54 (five years ago) link

i started this show a couple months ago (Boys & Girls in the City, via netflix) and i watch ultra-slowly, so i'm only up to episode 15.

i will say that episode 14, the one where uchi and minori kiss for the first time, was possibly the finest half an hour of television i have ever seen. it was like nathan for you levels of awkwardness, only real, but sort of not real. unbelievable. i watched half of the episode with hands over my eyes.

but i'm there are fuckups (Karl Malone), Monday, 18 March 2019 01:03 (five years ago) link

Karl Malone, watch as many episodes as possible. I think it's a huge supplement to a westener's sense of manners.

Yerac, Monday, 18 March 2019 02:56 (five years ago) link

<3 Maeda. Even drafted him on my ILX Fantasy team today!

Jersey Al (Albert R. Broccoli), Monday, 18 March 2019 03:03 (five years ago) link

<3 the story of his wife taking a selfie with Taishi & Chikako and sending it to him while he was playing in the World Series.

Jersey Al (Albert R. Broccoli), Monday, 18 March 2019 03:04 (five years ago) link

B&GitC is so good. Savor it.

Jersey Al (Albert R. Broccoli), Monday, 18 March 2019 03:05 (five years ago) link

I don't know how I feel about this season. Tsubasa/Shion and Seina were the MVPs, I don't think I will remember much else from it. I wish Masao had been on the upcoming season instead.

I was reading an interview with Lauren and didn't realize that they only film in the house a couple of hours a day. So weird.

Yerac, Tuesday, 19 March 2019 15:38 (five years ago) link

I am a little obsessed with the white tracksuit with winged sleeves? that You wears near the end.

Yerac, Tuesday, 19 March 2019 15:46 (five years ago) link

in this bleak world we need some TH gossip:

Tsubasa broke up with Shion:
https://www.instagram.com/p/Bvb9UhvBCK9/

so weird that Seina & Noah outlasted them.

also rumors that Taishi & Chikako are over.

Jersey Al (Albert R. Broccoli), Monday, 25 March 2019 16:40 (five years ago) link

!!! I was looking last week and thought I saw something about promise rings between Tsubasa and Shion! What does that instagram post say??? They seemed really weird on the last episode.

Yerac, Monday, 25 March 2019 16:41 (five years ago) link

oh, f i see it on jezebel now.

Yerac, Monday, 25 March 2019 16:49 (five years ago) link

The Jezebel translation misses some nuance, sp. that Tsubasa broke up with Shion (ie, her call, perhaps not mutual) but yeah, big surprise!

Jersey Al (Albert R. Broccoli), Monday, 25 March 2019 17:08 (five years ago) link

I am deliberating whether to text the news to my spouse or not. It's so silly but exactly the type of thing he should be made aware of.

Yerac, Monday, 25 March 2019 17:11 (five years ago) link

I mean, this will be dominating the news cycle for the next few weeks...

Jersey Al (Albert R. Broccoli), Monday, 25 March 2019 17:45 (five years ago) link

first the mueller report, now this. it’s a cruel world, man.

(⊙_⊙?) (original bgm), Monday, 25 March 2019 17:55 (five years ago) link

Damn, that sucks. A bleak world gets bleaker

Apparently I am the first person on the Internet to work out that Depparin from Ainori Love Wagon looks like Mads Mikkelsen

PPL+AI=NS (imago), Saturday, 30 March 2019 22:31 (five years ago) link

At tonight's Dodgers game, Kenta Maeda's pre-at-bat music is "Slow Down" by Lights Follow, the international theme to Terrace House.
