How often has a film been nominated for both BP and Foreign Language Film?
This is the sixth time:
Z (1969)The Emigrants (Foreign Language Film in 1971, Best Picture in 1972)Life Is Beautiful (1998)Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon (2000)Amour (2012)Roma (2018)
(Cries and Whispers and Il Postino were nominated for BP but didn't receive a Foreign-Language Film nomination because they weren't submitted by their respective countries. And Grand Illusion got a BP nomination before the Foreign-Language category was created.)

Aw. Bao. That made me cry.

The Film Experience guy got 100% on BP, foreign film, and animated film, and I assume he was not alone.

This isn't it at all. The directors' branch likely votes for the directors of what THEY, a small subset of the members, think are the 5 best films.
This is one of the reasons.

Mr Rogers' corpse snubbed for Best Doc Feature! Amazing that “Hale County This Morning, This Evening" might've displaced it. I assume Justice Ginsburg's cult will carry the day.
A good rule of thumb is that any time you can look at a category and say "with the exception of [title] this is a surprisingly good slate," [title] will always win.

RBG is one of the most [title] movies I've seen this year.
this doc short may win for Trumpian reasons
Congrats to @fieldofvision for the Oscar nomination for “A Night at the Garden” which @Schwarz called the most terrifying movie you can watch at Halloween (or any time) https://t.co/792fdGVm0N #OscarNoms— Charlotte Greensit (@cgreensit) January 22, 2019

Yalitza Aparicio in Roma gave one of those completely interior performances that the academy voters usually seem to hate. I'm glad she got nominated

Oscar nominee Ready Player One
No arguments in my corner.
― forrest drumpf (Eric H.), Tuesday, 22 January 2019 17:15 (five years ago) link
1976 had Ingmar Bergman for Face to Face and Lina Wertmuller for Seven Beauties. I think that's the only precedent, though.

that's the one I was going to post; it's the only one

1976 also had two women in foreign films up for Best Actress.
I would be fine with this member-refreshed directors' branch just doing the nominations for every category tbh.

More a reflection of legitimately having no alternatives from stateside product in that era.

is it that bad?
that article jaymc linked above about Richter and Donnersmarck is fascinating! The ending of The Lives of Others was a little too sentimental for me, and I was disappointed to see that his film Never Look Away was on the foreign language nominees list and not Burning, but now I’m interested in seeing this film.

Stunned that this is the first time Spike Lee has been nominated for Best Director, but tbf there are only a few of his movies that could've plausibly been nominated: DTRT, Malcolm X, 25th Hour. the rest either sucked, too out there for the Academy (Bamboozled), or flopped (He Got Game). He's surely gotten a Best Doc nom though right?
― flappy bird, Tuesday, 22 January 2019 18:53 (five years ago) link

People are sharing this about on Twitter, i've no recollection of it at all. It must've been cut from the tv coverage in the UK, they did a next-day highlights package on the BBC in the 80s, until the early 90s when Sky began showing it live.

Just looked at the list. Mild rooting interest in Bale--no feelings about anybody else. They should give some kind of an award for the "It's Too Late to Turn Back Now" scene in BlacKkKlansman.

you guys aware that two blockbusters are up for Best Picture? It's gonna do better than the last few broadcasts.
They should give out the Academy Awards as the Super Bowl halftime show.
