I hold the opposing view that people don't care about the results as much as they care how entertaining the broadcast is. People obv. remember the results more than the presenter but if there's no one to host the show that's going to make you laugh, or possibly make you laugh, then no one will care enough to watch with much enthusiasm. Watching Chris Rock presenting in the year of *oscars so white* was a treat, for example.
― Acting Crazy (Instrumental) (jed_), Wednesday, 23 January 2019 02:22 (five years ago) link
Also, people talk about how it's too long but the fact that it's too long is the point of it. If it was actually too long then they could just press-release the results. It would make for terrible oscar parties though.
― Acting Crazy (Instrumental) (jed_), Wednesday, 23 January 2019 02:26 (five years ago) link
The fact that it's too long is what gives it the little cultural currency that it has. If it lasts two hours and doesn't have a host then it is truly fucked.

I agree, yet I still hold the 2001 telecast with Steve Martin as host was the most fleet of foot.

Steve Martin was the best. I loved his opening line: "800m people around the world are watching us, and they're all thinking the same thing: we're all gay"

So @theacademy continues to baffle in decision making. This has to be the single worst executed year for the awards body, in a year that they have a great crop of nominees! #JohnBaileyResign https://t.co/30GKSv8k0u via @variety— Clayton Davis (@AwardsCircuit) January 24, 2019

So long as it keeps the Oscars from adding a g-d stunt category, I'm fine with them keeping best song and the other twenty-odd categories.

yes, there should be a separate Stunt Awards, so that they can be awarded retroactively to at least 1918

Could care less about the telecast or results, but the revenues from the ceremony fund film preservation efforts. If the Academy wants to add stunts or best popular film or a zillion other categories, have at it.

Average Academy voter: https://www.thedailybeast.com/anonymous-oscar-voters-blasts-smear-campaigns-against-green-book-and-bohemian-rhapsody
Best Director. In that category, will the winner be Alfonso Cuaron for Roma?
I do not like Roma. I don’t hate it. It’s fine. I just don’t understand the fuss. Some of his films are my favorites of all time, but not this one. I’m going with Peter Farrelly for Green Book.
But it’ll have to be a write-in. He wasn’t nominated.
Oh!
Maybe they didn’t transcend the controversy?
Then Adam McKay for Vice.

Richard E. Grant for Can You Ever Forgive Me? I’ve been a fan of him for years. His performance was such a departure from what I’ve seen him do.
I thought he always played messy gays.
I take it that in Musto's memory, Withnail and Hudson Hawk are the same movie, and he's not seen REG in anything else since.
The queen had all her pet rabbits, but I bet Glenn Close could boil them in no time.

Is it weird that for BlacKkKlansman, Adam Driver is nominated (for supporting), but not John David Washington (for lead)?I didn’t think Denzel Washington’s son deserved to be nominated. He was fine, but not over-the-top spectacular. The thing that made that film work on a bipartisan level was Adam Driver, so I’m not disappointed that he got nominated. Is it problematic that there’s only two supporting nominees, Mahershala Ali (Green Book) and Regina King, as black actors nominated? It could be. We’re always tending to be portrayed as a bunch of racist white people by our own Academy, so the fact that BlacKkKlansman and Black Panther were nominated for Best Picture will subdue that.

so many choice bits
Gaga could act and you finally got to see her for who she was, as opposed to the persona she portrays onstage -- so that's how acting works, got it
