so many choice bits

Gaga could act and you finally got to see her for who she was, as opposed to the persona she portrays onstage -- so that's how acting works, got it

We’re always tending to be portrayed as a bunch of racist white people by our own Academy, so the fact that BlacKkKlansman and Black Panther were nominated for Best Picture will subdue that.

Those anonymous articles are quickly becoming my favorite part of Oscar season.

Frederik B, Friday, 8 February 2019 22:34 (five years ago) link

So Lady Gaga’s performance in A Star is Born is no competition?

Ugh. I am not a fan of A Star is Born. The one thing I loved is Bradley Cooper’s hair. I don’t know how he got his hair to do that!

this show could be a magnificent travesty, and it might not even take four hours to watch.

adam the (abanana), Friday, 8 February 2019 23:45 (five years ago) link

I saw the live-action and animated shorts nominees. Are they always such a grim lot?

Anne Hedonia (j.lu), Sunday, 10 February 2019 21:00 (five years ago) link

I’ve seen all of the animated ones except Weekends. One Small Step is good; the others, meh. Most of the live action ones didn’t sound interesting to me this year; I’ve only seen Fauve (which I liked).

Timothée Charalambides (cryptosicko), Sunday, 10 February 2019 21:10 (five years ago) link

the animated ones are usually about like a rabbit or a sandcastle, I saw the live action shorts today and they were not only terrible but contemptible, emotionally exploitative on top of being aesthetically repulsive.

flappy bird, Sunday, 10 February 2019 23:48 (five years ago) link

Take the shitty Bulger murder reenactment out of the mix and live action shorts were the best of the three short categories. Docs were mostly boring and animated were mostly devoid of imagination.

Seriously tho, Detainment may be the worst movie nominated for an Oscar this year, period. No small achievement.

Kinda curious about Skin but only for the Jonathan Tucker factor. Love that guy

Skin is so fucked up

flappy bird, Monday, 11 February 2019 06:27 (five years ago) link

Apparently Skin is being expanded into a full-length feature. No thank you.

Live action drama shorts, with the exception of Marguerite, are a trainwreck.

Wth Jame Bell instead of Tucker, which seems like a lateral move at best.

obviously for things to unfold predictably is the surefire bet, but if there is any strangeness at midnight on the 24th it might be

Foreign Film: Roma
Director: Spike
BP: Green Book

Live action drama shorts, with the exception of Marguerite, are a trainwreck.

And Marguerite only looked so good because the other nominated shorts are so repulsive.

Anne Hedonia (j.lu), Monday, 11 February 2019 15:36 (five years ago) link

I went to the opening night screening of the live action nominated shorts. walkouts throughout the show as people hit their frustration point. Skin was the final short shown and when the dad started getting beaten by skinheads, a dude from the crowd got up and started screaming at the Oscar rep in attendance: "how dare you throw all this garbage at us! why not put cameras in the showers at auschwitz! what the fuck is wrong with you!" and stormed out in a huff. After the kid shot his dad at the end there was honest-to-god sarcastic applause from the crowd. theater employees in the lobby were clearly amused and laughing at the steady stream of walkouts and disgruntled viewers; i overheard one guy say "and this is OPENING NIGHT? we're not going to be able to keep showing these!" total fustercluck of a selection; i agree that Marguerite was only good in comparison to the rest of the drek. Detainment is one of the most pointless and bleak pieces of film I've seen; everyone involved should be embarrassed.

Fuck the NRA (ulysses), Monday, 11 February 2019 17:21 (five years ago) link

Marguerite may be the least offensive of this group but it still sucked - all of these shorts were the climaxes of movies, and we have no time to get to know the characters before they're hurt, killed, or have some breakthrough moment. Marguerite could make a solid feature.

Leaving out the DP award is an odd choice. I thought they'd leave out the sound twins.

Makeup is a joke category, glad to see it gone. (the oscars always pick the showy ones. and sometimes they reward diva leeches, like streep's iron lady dude.)

Good time to remember that time the Oscars, always a geyser of smart ideas that cut down on time, elected Michael Flatley to demonstrate film editing https://t.co/FuDf6V5b5l

Also seems like 90% of clips shown were single shots from different films edited together. Doesn't say much about the editing in those films...

That may be the least of its problems though.

Not that this clip's aged any better, but at least it's actually theoretically related to the topic it's showing off:

More anonymous voter insight: https://www.nytimes.com/2019/02/14/movies/best-picture-oscars-voters.html?smid=tw-nytimesarts&smtyp=cur

* Rami Malek is winning best actor by at least 30 points
* Voters know BlacKkKlansman winning would look the best in 20-30 years (and now)
* the two most broadly-liked movies are the ones with the least nominations, Green Book and Bohemian Rhapsody
* simmering white resentment might push Green Book to a win

A few older voters said they had gone back to watch the 1954 version of “A Star Is Born,” with Judy Garland, and come away with the belief that the current version wasn’t as good, especially in its second hour.

yet a couple voters complained about the length of some of the other nominees

Cucked again

flappy bird, Saturday, 16 February 2019 00:54 (five years ago) link

I liked what Mark Harris had to say about it:

“This didn't happen bc of an "outrage mob" or anything like it. People who love the tradition of the Oscars are not opposed to the show changing or evolving. But those decisions have to come from a place of affection and respect for what the Oscars are, not fear or contempt.

The proposed changes were all about distaste for the Oscars & to the artists they honor. Songs are boring--dump 'em. Last year's winners? Who cares--get bigger stars. Tech categories? Zzz. They alienate the kids. Best Picture? Snooty. Give a new award to a film REAL people like.

This stems from a conviction that the Oscars are forever "broken" and that the way to "fix" them is to make them appeal to those who hate them--to say, yeah, we think they're kind of awful too.

But the show can produce joy and idiosyncrasy in the most unexpected moments... “

Dan S, Saturday, 16 February 2019 04:23 (five years ago) link

went to the documentary shorts yesterday against my better judgment.

Black Sheep: not bad. generally against dramatic reenactments but I thought this one earned it, feel like I would've had a much stronger negative reaction against the end sequence but idk, it worked. Low bar, but this was one was alright.

End Game: can't handle kids with cancer so I sat in the lobby for 40 minutes.

A Night at the Garden: really great and interesting, had no idea about this rally, fascinating footage, only wish it were longer!

Lifeboat: OK... but I walked out after the bloated, distended corpse.

Didn't stay for the last one.
