I think what's on and what's not is fine, allowing for some subjectivity. Myself, I wouldn't distinguish between The Last Tycoon and New York, New York--I'd have them both on (in that they're both in the middle of his peak years, and he's good in both) or both off (in that they're both minor in terms of the films around them).

True Confessions was considered something of a little masterpiece when I were a lad. It’s really fallen off the radar since I guess.

i watched that on a strong recommendation a few years ago. i like some of the other films by that director, ulu grosbard, a lot. but i found it, just ok.
