Also, I still don't know what the fuck the title of this thread means.

This has one of the greatest totally nonsense DC chase scenes ever filmed. Also, Costner spends 90% of the movie in Navy dress whites.

TOMBOT, Friday, 18 November 2005 21:38 (eighteen years ago) link

haha I know what I'm renting this weekend!

quincie, Friday, 18 November 2005 21:46 (eighteen years ago) link

avert your eyes when they take a cab!

mookieproof (mookieproof), Friday, 18 November 2005 21:59 (eighteen years ago) link

is that really how you ?

carly (carly), Friday, 18 November 2005 22:02 (eighteen years ago) link

The chase scene is awesome, it starts at the Pentagon, then somehow ends up on...I forget which bridge but it isn't the correct one, then suddenly Costner is running down the bike/jog path in Georgetown, gets onto the GEORGETOWN RED LINE METRO STOP, then gets off at his final destination (not a diverted, escape destination)...the Pentagon City Mall.

WTF?

OTOH I think that kind of level of getting lost has happened every single time I've been in a car in DC, so never mind.

I am shedding one heartfelt emotion tear for that crap team. Right now. For reals.

mookieproof (mookieproof), Monday, 21 November 2005 17:52 (eighteen years ago) link

arrrgh. so, they'll finish what, 7-9?

I heard the new Madonna single a couple days ago and I can't get it out of my head! IT WONT GO AWAY. And then guy in next cubicle was just listening to it..

dar1a g (daria g), Monday, 21 November 2005 18:58 (eighteen years ago) link

You guys are aware that you're still gonna go 7-9, right?

for those of you that might find this interesting/worthwhile - konono no. 1 (congotronics) are playing for free tomorrow on the kennedy center's millenium stage. should be nifty.

ZR (teenagequiet), Monday, 21 November 2005 19:22 (eighteen years ago) link

Pigskin, pandas, whatever: Last chance for stinky flower!

The giant corpse flower at the Botanic Garden is closing tonight, after blooming for the first time yesterday. It's Sumatran! It's five feet tall! It smells like rotting flesh! Isn't that worth standing in the rain for?

Stephen X (Stephen X), Monday, 21 November 2005 20:40 (eighteen years ago) link

Oh, no way! the congotronics guys! Yeah, I'll totally go to that!

dar1a g (daria g), Monday, 21 November 2005 20:44 (eighteen years ago) link

oh - i almost saw that awful flower last year or the year before. and ill be at the electrified thumb-piano show, too!

petesmith (plsmith), Monday, 21 November 2005 21:06 (eighteen years ago) link

You never see rotting-corpse-flower potpourri at Pottery Barn these days.

Stephen X (Stephen X), Monday, 21 November 2005 21:09 (eighteen years ago) link

not like the old days, you dont.

petesmith (plsmith), Monday, 21 November 2005 21:13 (eighteen years ago) link

pottery barn totally sold out.

the konono thing looks to be a veritable FAP itself - i'll be there, pete's gonna be there, steve/curmudgeon, and - if the rumors are true - $trongo may make it down from bmore. you should totally come, dar1a.

ZR (teenagequiet), Monday, 21 November 2005 21:17 (eighteen years ago) link

I'll be at the Millennium Stage, too, work allowing. FAP/dinner after?

Brian Miller (Brian Miller), Monday, 21 November 2005 21:37 (eighteen years ago) link

I will be there. Hopefully Konono will be using their car part percussion, car part amps and mics, and those big megaphones as well to make all of us fans of their noisy Congo rhythms happy. I won't be able to stick around for FAP/dinner after though---writing to do...

curmudgeon, Tuesday, 22 November 2005 12:52 (eighteen years ago) link

6pm tonight? I'll try to get there.

j.lu (j.lu), Tuesday, 22 November 2005 12:57 (eighteen years ago) link

everyone who's goin to konono ougta say hey to me and pete if you see us - maybe we can get a drink or some food after, as brian suggested

ZR (teenagequiet), Tuesday, 22 November 2005 21:51 (eighteen years ago) link

Hey, sorry I left early y'all.. had to be somewhere, also this Congolese (I think?) dude started talking to me in French and was like, well, if you want to go visit Africa (I do), then give me your phone number, you never know, maybe for Thanksgiving someone will give you a plane ticket! I was like, that's so nice of you, but I don't have any vacation time and oops, gotta go. It was funny.

dar1a g (daria g), Wednesday, 23 November 2005 06:17 (eighteen years ago) link

It's also funny in that there were not that many Congolese folks there. The K. Center will never learn to give flyers to little African shops like Simba Records in Langely Park, or to that African art and furniture and cd store in Landmark Mall in Alexandria.

Hey Zach, Brian, and Pete, sorry I was distracted afterward tracking down band and song info. But I had to do my research for the review. Some other time I should be able to talk and hang out.

curmudgeon (Steve K), Wednesday, 23 November 2005 06:54 (eighteen years ago) link

I will have to meet Strongo/jess and Dar1a another time. It was ILX and music geek central--Contributors to the Post, City Papers, Jazz Times, Post Express and more.

curmudgeon, Wednesday, 23 November 2005 14:03 (eighteen years ago) link

darn, I am sure I knew a bunch of people there & wish I hadn't had to bail. oh well, there will be more music.

It was neat stuff but the sound was already pretty familiar to me - now I know why I'd been reading an article saying this was seen as a v traditional group in the Congo, not really cutting edge (that would be hip hop, nowadays).

dar1a g (daria g), Wednesday, 23 November 2005 15:08 (eighteen years ago) link

yeah, pretty neat overall - i really don't like the kennedy center as a venue though.

so yeah just a reminder but mandalay in silver spring on saturday.

ZR (teenagequiet), Wednesday, 23 November 2005 15:18 (eighteen years ago) link

Without the handmade from car part amps and mics, and with the megaphones broken, Konono was a good African dance band but not as unique as on the cd.

Enjoy Mandalay, I'm busy with family this weekend.

curmudgeon, Wednesday, 23 November 2005 15:40 (eighteen years ago) link

what time mandalay, ZR? 7?

petesmith (plsmith), Wednesday, 23 November 2005 15:58 (eighteen years ago) link

i think 7 sounds like a reasonable goal to shoot for - actually, here's the thing - if people could say yeah or nah as soon as they can, it'd help cuz i guess i'm gonna try and make reservations or something. otherwise it might be really hard to get a table.

ZR (teenagequiet), Wednesday, 23 November 2005 15:59 (eighteen years ago) link

I'll still be swilling gravy in our nation's heartland Satuday, alas; eat some tea leaves for me.

Stephen X (Stephen X), Wednesday, 23 November 2005 16:04 (eighteen years ago) link

me! me! i'll be there! unless of course I befall some tragic fate in Troy, Virginia, which is apparently near Charlottesville. . . so, what I should I do in the Charlottesville environs Thurs/Fri? I haven't been since, uh, 1996.

quincie, Wednesday, 23 November 2005 16:13 (eighteen years ago) link

I can come to Manderlay on Saturday!

Mary (Mary), Wednesday, 23 November 2005 23:46 (eighteen years ago) link

Greetings from not-quite Charlottesville. Hope everyone is having a pleasant Thanksgiving. Please post if we're definitely on for Saturday--I'll be able to check the board tommorrow (Friday) to see if we're on; I'll be Internet-less on Saturday.

Also: I am drunk. Turkey not yet served. Must procure refill. Ciao!

quincie, Thursday, 24 November 2005 20:18 (eighteen years ago) link

Greetings from the flatlands, where my male kin are preparing to burn the house down with one of those turkey-frying apparatuses. Some Mandalay sounds pretty good just now.

Stephen X (Stephen X), Thursday, 24 November 2005 20:37 (eighteen years ago) link

hello all. would love to be @ Mandalay but am also out in the country 'til late Sunday. we're redneckin' now.. gee, I could go to the Wal-Mart at 5am!

or not.

dar1a g (daria g), Friday, 25 November 2005 04:54 (eighteen years ago) link

Yeah, we're on. 7 pm. Will make reservations tomorrow - so if you can, lemme know before early afternoon if you can come by so I can get a big enough table and all that. I cut a christmas tree today. It was really fucking cold.

ZR (teenagequiet), Friday, 25 November 2005 20:10 (eighteen years ago) link

Quincie, did Mr. Q's boss grant blue-jeans privileges for today?

Stephen X (Stephen X), Friday, 25 November 2005 21:42 (eighteen years ago) link

We should still be able to make it, I have the car reserved until midnight.

No worky for me today, kind of a holy shit moment!

TOMBOT, Friday, 25 November 2005 21:53 (eighteen years ago) link

Hi all! No worky for either me or Mr. Q yesterday, and the clothing of choice was pajamas until well into the afternoon. We'll be headed back to town later this afternoon and I plan to see ya'll in beautiful downtown Silver Spring this evening.

quincie, Saturday, 26 November 2005 15:05 (eighteen years ago) link

Arg I don't think I can make it after all. I wasted all of yesterday being depressed and advising strangers how to get into college, now I have to do this project that is due Monday that I just started. Have fun, though!

Mary (Mary), Saturday, 26 November 2005 20:19 (eighteen years ago) link

I am still back in my hometown. The local mall has a new booth near center court with "Redneck Outfitters" and other various and sundry redneck t-shirts for sale. I was tempted to buy one but unfortunately the confederate flag is rather prominently featured in each and every design, and I have to draw the line somewhere.

dar1a g (daria g), Saturday, 26 November 2005 20:27 (eighteen years ago) link

Urgh. It is almost four and we haven't left the sticks yet, so I may not be back in time for chow. Someone please eat some horse gram powder and describe it in intimate detail for me!

quincie, Saturday, 26 November 2005 20:38 (eighteen years ago) link

See you all at Mandalay at 7pm.!

j.lu (j.lu), Saturday, 26 November 2005 22:29 (eighteen years ago) link

I'm gonna refrain from laughing at y'alls this week.

dudes they were ahead when I left my home town late in the 3rd quarter.. and then.. three and a half hours later (WHY YOU ALL DRIVE SO SLOW ON I-70) I walk in the door & the first thing my housemate says is awww, sorry about the Redskins!

dar1a g (daria g), Monday, 28 November 2005 21:40 (eighteen years ago) link

But how was Mandalay?

Curmudgeon Steve (Steve K), Tuesday, 29 November 2005 02:40 (eighteen years ago) link

I think restaurant critic Todd Kliman has started at the Washingtonian. I will have to check out the November and later issues at a newstand, or at my folks (it's not worth buying, but he is worth reading)...
