Seán Mac Stíofáin the first provo chief of staff was a Londoner

He was, but Connolly the Hibee was better.

My mum told me one of the Coyle family from the Tayto crisps empire wanted to adopt her when she was a young very badly cared for child, her one chance to escape the dangerous and terrible 50's Irish care system and a bad start in life and it passed her by for some unexplained reason. But thank god she met that loser ..etc..

when she tells me this classic for umpteenth time, while I'm doing eye-rolls it doesn't occur to her that i don't have the same enthusiasm as her for a timeline where she is happier and I don't exist!

calzino, Thursday, 9 May 2019 09:20 (five years ago) link

I’m glad you exist but it’s a shame all the same, would have been nice to have had a contact who could sort me out with the Christmas box of real Tayto

a timeline where a 70 odd year old Irish member of the Coyle family became an Ilxer after googling Daniel O'Donnell's hypnagogic phase, and finding the gateway drug ILM.

a vote even more agonising than the literal one itt

I’m on your side calz but Big Crisp is ever vigilant and I wouldn’t count on support from some of this crowd...

Taytos are the best crisps in the universe THE END as you were LG x

(I was looking for a picture of Mr Tayto and his friendly wave but that was better)

That is a surprisingly ornate tweet.

daenerys baker (darraghmac), Friday, 31 May 2019 07:54 (five years ago) link

Murdoch's "Scottish" surely?

Ned Caligari (Tom D.), Friday, 31 May 2019 09:15 (five years ago) link

Certainly a lot more than he is Irish.

Ned Caligari (Tom D.), Friday, 31 May 2019 09:19 (five years ago) link

yeah thats the first one to jump out

morgan, not having, diaspora needs not to be so avowedly of the new nation- nb this isnt a hard and fast rule obv but it fuckin is when the new nation is tory

daenerys baker (darraghmac), Friday, 31 May 2019 10:48 (five years ago) link

I maintain that Michael Flatley is the correct answer.

pomenitul, Friday, 31 May 2019 10:50 (five years ago) link

hes a sure qualifier at least

daenerys baker (darraghmac), Friday, 31 May 2019 10:50 (five years ago) link

Pretty sure "Tory" is an Irish derivation tbf

specific goats my way (Noodle Vague), Friday, 31 May 2019 11:35 (five years ago) link

tbh I didn't vote because every time I clicked on someone who wasn't Murdoch (mostly Brendan O'Neill tbh) my brain went "but obviously Murdoch is *worse*" but it felt weird picking Murdoch when I didn't even know he had anything to do with Ireland until this thread

anyway he doesn't come close to most entrants on this list but I just wanted to record somewhere that I get v confused when I see posts from former UKIP MEP Patrick O'Flynn on Twitter and think "why does this person with an Irish name have such UKIPpy takes on Brexit"

mark s, Friday, 31 May 2019 17:56 (five years ago) link

not sure murdoch has ever made claims of any connection so i'm not sure why anyone would preemptively claim him

mh, Friday, 31 May 2019 18:05 (five years ago) link

Murdoch's an outstanding choice for a "worst member", but as for "Irish diaspora", not so much.

A is for (Aimless), Friday, 31 May 2019 18:10 (five years ago) link

Definitely the worst member of the Irish-English-Scottish diaspora.

pomenitul, Friday, 31 May 2019 18:11 (five years ago) link

gyac, Friday, 31 May 2019 18:12 (five years ago) link

gyac, Friday, 31 May 2019 18:12 (five years ago) link

"Elisabeth Murdoch was born in Melbourne on 8 February 1909, the third daughter of Marie Grace de Lancey (Forth) and Rupert Greene. Her grandfather, William Henry Greene, was an Irish railway engineer (later one of the three Commissioners of Victorian Railways) who emigrated to Australia and married Fanny, the fourth of the 10 daughters of George Govett.[1] Her mother's ancestors were Scottish and English; one of her maternal great-grandfathers was a lieutenant governor in the West Indies.[2] Elisabeth was educated at St Catherine's School in Toorak, and at Clyde School in Woodend.[3] She married Keith Murdoch, 23 years her senior, in 1928 and inherited the bulk of his fortune when he died in 1952."

mark s, Friday, 31 May 2019 18:21 (five years ago) link

The obvious question is does being an engineer for an Irish railway make you Irish, especially if your surname is Greene?

A is for (Aimless), Friday, 31 May 2019 18:32 (five years ago) link

The next obvious question would be, does having just one maternal great-grandparent make you part of the Irish diaspora?

A is for (Aimless), Friday, 31 May 2019 18:34 (five years ago) link

Only if you've read Ulysses in its entirety.

greene is an irish surname (can also be an english one, but that's fairly common)

part of my family are harleys, also a name that can be english, but they're irish catholics from donegal. some anglicization going on, as with greene I'm sure

findom haddie (jim in vancouver), Friday, 31 May 2019 19:57 (five years ago) link

grian (ag spalpadh)

gyac, Friday, 31 May 2019 20:16 (five years ago) link

I'm an O'Dowd with a dropped O, which was as far as my dad's anglicisation went, probably because despite him having an impressive skill set/experience in building and as a fitter, he wouldn't have stood a chance in the jobs market against someone without an O in front of their name in 60's/70's England.
