my Gran from Tralee use to give me booze and fags from the age of 14, she used to be a chainsmoker with this exotic looking cigarette holder - well I'd seen one before. She was the only family on my dad's side I had much affection for. I can still remember playing her the pet shop boys Disco album and she was saying: this is real grand music is this. I think lots of people had inspirational chainsmoking grans back then.

My gran: that, but posh - retired fashion buyer, cigarette in deco holder, very good at mixed drinks and after-dinner schnapps in tiny red glasses.

(additional wrinkle in the truthbomb digression: radio times ONLY carried BBC-related info before 1991)
This is true – and the TV Times ONLY had ITV/Channel 4. What's more, before that year no other magazines (or newspapers) could print a whole week's worth of TV – only that day's. So more or less everyone in 70s/80s Britain who had a TV bought bought Radio/TV Times if they wanted to know what was coming up. It was amazing when the papers suddenly could print their own TV guides – a big tabloid hullabaloo.

It was obligatory, you had to buy both, every week.
When they got to publish each other's schedule, most people (I believe) went Radio Times. TV Times was more about Soap Opera coverage. Mind you, the RT definitely got more gentrified, particularly when you get an indication of the target market via the adverts : Statuettes, ceramic plates, commemorative gold coins of 3 mm wide from obscure islands with suitably "ROyal Minte" type names. (I think it's like this now, innit?)
So, it got to only buying the Christmas edition, then not even that.
― Mark G, Monday, 5 August 2019 10:14 (five years ago) link
Yeah, we only had them at christmas, can't remember what we'd do the rest of the year if we wanted to know what was on a few days in advance... use ceefax maybe?
But you tell young people today about the TV Times/Radio Times closed shop, they won't believe you (at least, that's how I interpret the glazed, bored look in their eye)

At what point did those trailers between shows of what was coming up that evening/tomorrow/later that week, stop?

a special leather-bound folder thing to keep it in
I remember seeing an advert for this in the Radio Times and thinking that it was pretentious wannabe posh posturing.

Tbh I have lived here over a decade and the intricacies of the UK class system are still a mystery to me, the one thing I can say is that they’re really really into it.

The Windsors are not really considered posh by real posh people, of course. There was that thing about how some people thought Lady Diana was marrying beneath her by marrying into the Royal Family.
