my spouse's colleagues and students have all been asking us gringos how we feel about the protests and if I am scared. He is like "oh she has an isreali gas mask with hydration tube."

Our street has been getting a lot of action because we live 2-3 blocks from the tallest building in SA which has a 6 floor mall in it, so it's been mostly closed for a couple of weeks and the police are defending that thing like it's full of virgins and puppies. So throngs are constantly being teargassed and chased onto our street. The whole block is full of teargas and our nice doorman (doormen here are usually just older men in cardigans) is watering our front garden and not even flinching when kids are doing reacharounds to fill their water bottles.

yeah it's pretty encouraging. the right did terribly which obviously makes sense given how unpopular the president is right now, and given that they backed rejecting a new constitution. so they won't be able to fuck things up vetoing everything.

likelihood of a really big tent left coalition government under the communist jadue after elections at the end of the year.

I think that the good results of Kast (far right) in the polls for the first round is due to the fact that he is consolidating the vote of the right, due to a weak candidate of the center-right. The vote of the left is still divided into two candidates, left and center-left, this should change in the second round. I hope so!
