Gavin Newsom proposes dumbest nightlife law ever

LOL to people "smoking for three hours" outside clubs

Is Newsom the most meddling, boring U.S. mayor of all time?

Mackro Mackro, Friday, 29 February 2008 17:42 (sixteen years ago) link

OK, not DUMBEST, but certainly the least effective.

Mackro Mackro, Friday, 29 February 2008 17:42 (sixteen years ago) link

Little Star Pizza is probably the best pizza I have ever had.

libcrypt, Saturday, 1 March 2008 02:34 (sixteen years ago) link

Ran across this place in Bernal Heights near the studio and ended up eating there a lot. Great crepes.

damn, really? I went there a few months back, thought it was deec. Maybe I'm too provincial.

so where can I find a greasy-ass NY-style slice that's gonna assault my taste buds with hot pornographic love? Any reccs (besides that joint on 16th/Valencia) would be appreciated.

Cosmo Vitelli, Sunday, 2 March 2008 03:08 (sixteen years ago) link

i like victors. its the shizzzz. 1411 polk st.

chaki, Sunday, 2 March 2008 03:10 (sixteen years ago) link

Pizza My Heart in San Mateo/Santa Cruz, and maybe some other locations in the Bay Area, has that kind of big, yummy, thin slice of pizza.

But really, SF is more about fancy pizzas - Gialina, Pauline's, Pizzetta 211, etc. See Michael Bauer's blog for lots of mini pizza-place reviews

schwantz, Sunday, 2 March 2008 03:23 (sixteen years ago) link

chaki, i will try to come

remy bean, Sunday, 2 March 2008 03:26 (sixteen years ago) link

I love Greek-style pizza, but I don't think there are any Greek za joints in SF.

i was gonna suggest Arinell's (that joint on 16th/Valencia), but there's also Escape From New York Pizza in the haight that's pretty good. just had it for lunch today.

thanx doods. unless officially marked otherwise on the calendar, I'm hereby declaring March 2-8 to be pizza week.

Interesting "facts": San Francisco is the city with the second most expensive rent in the US, however Berkeley is the most expensive suburb in the US.

freewheel, Sunday, 2 March 2008 09:11 (sixteen years ago) link

I went to sunny Foster City last week for a job thing. I saw my hotel and the building I was to work in and not much else. Hadn't realized before how beautiful SFO is, especially compared to LAX or any socal airports really.

tremendoid, Sunday, 2 March 2008 10:40 (sixteen years ago) link

Greetings. Thanks for the tips BTW

Here's another random call for suggestions - eat, drink, make merry - I'll be in the BA March 8-15. I grew up in the West Bay and lived in SF on and off in the early-mid 80s so I know the basics but I haven't visited for about 10 years. I'll be staying in the East Bay but I'll be fully mobile.

And BTW I was stuck in Foster City for a year when I was in high school. One of he most frightening places I've ever been. It was un-natural. No birds or insects, it's like they knew that the land was not supposed to be there. I kept expecting the whole thing to sink into the bay.

Just throw mud at the wall... I'll take it with a grain of metaphor.

PS. Last time I was there I was trying to find an old Mexican restaurant (not the ubiquitous tacqueria) on the Mission, around 24th. my recollection is that it was the oldest Mexican restaurant in the city, dating back to the turn of century or something...

PPS. Can reciprocate about Chicago on demand. Also have some tips about Buenos Aires... the first being GO THERE!

factcheckr, Sunday, 2 March 2008 17:29 (sixteen years ago) link

I think SFO is rather ugly, honestly. Granted, nothing is as bad as LAX, but DFW, O'Hare are much nicer, for instance. Cf. worst airport thread.

libcrypt, Sunday, 2 March 2008 18:36 (sixteen years ago) link

I also think that SFO's empty terminal 2 is kinda spooky-ugly.

BUMP

I live in Berkeley now, and I have no friends. Where can I hang out to meet non-lame people?

remy bean, Sunday, 9 March 2008 22:48 (sixteen years ago) link

remy bean, Sunday, 9 March 2008 22:48 (sixteen years ago) link

chaki, Monday, 10 March 2008 05:37 (sixteen years ago) link

i didn't even go cuz i knew quentin would just yak my ear off all night like he always does. it gets old, dude!

Cosmo Vitelli, Monday, 10 March 2008 05:52 (sixteen years ago) link

remy, i live in berkeley too. jupiter has good beer and pizza, kinda has a grad school vibe to it. also, pegasus and moe's books are great bookstores. starry plough has some good shows. ive seen mushroom and dead meadow there.
peoples cafe on shattuck has good coffee, decent food. in berkeley i will go and have a beer at some of the bars but for going out/going to shows theres not much. pretty dud. oaktown is the way to go though for shows, hanging out and meeting people. here is a good place to start if you are interested in oakland noise/underground warehouse shows.

This is my next international planned trip (for 2009, I think.)
