I went to Foremost Liquors and got cheap Coors Light and hit their discontinued wine section. Last time I did that I got a 10 year old zin that turned out to be fascinating -- it showed a lot of age, and might have been coming to the point where it was undrinkable soon, but as it was it was the most interesting $8 I spent on booze maybe ever.

Anyway, tonight I got a bottle of zin for $5 and a German off-dry rose for $5. Here's hoping they work out as well.

I should really go to Foremost more often. It's in the Argyle ghetto, and it's pretty busted looking, but it's got awesome selection.

EZ, if you're there, do you know/think anything about these:

Pesenti 1996 Zinfandel (Paso Robles)
Baden Weingartener Spaetburgunder Wessherbst 1995 Rose` Halbtrocken

Pesenti's History. Interesting. It was a run-of-the-mill inexpensive zin and then some winemakers started sourcing grapes from there, and now it's pricey (if you google it), so you got a great deal and your palette was right that it was something special.

Ah, that winter blue light and the amber Chicago streetlights.

A 12-year-old rose? That's a little crazy, but give it a try.

So the auction house is outdoing itself. The auction house is outdoing itself again with the next tasting. Le P1n goes for more than $1K a bottle, pretty much one of the most expensive wines in the world, and $50 gets you that and a dozen others.

Eazy, Tuesday, 2 October 2007 03:54 (sixteen years ago) link

Actually, my palette knows nothing just yet. The Pesenti is what I bought tonight. Wow, you're right, that IS 12 years! My wine-buying was all "I Love the 90s" tonight.

I really want to go to pre-auction tasting. I want to bring Courtney too.

Also, do you want to go see 'Night Mother? It has gotten pretty good reviews.

Jesse, Tuesday, 2 October 2007 04:03 (sixteen years ago) link

I saw those good reviews for 'n m. I've got a bunch of shows to see for work so I don't think I can make it, but you should go, and you should get Courtney on-board for the auction tasting. (The gal at the Pump R00m, who's a brilliant bartender and kind of neat too, is up for going once she gets back in November from working a harvest in Tuscany.)

Eazy, Tuesday, 2 October 2007 04:12 (sixteen years ago) link

Yeh, I'm going to try to make her go along. She's recently discovered white wine doesn't have to taste like you're sipping a 2x4.

I did something bad last night. I put Gatorade in her cabernet....

:(

Ok, Katie cut off our chat, but I think this is interesting. This is where I went to grade school. http://maps.google.com/maps?q=Condon,+MT,+United+States+of+America&ie=UTF8&ll=47.622599,-113.767869&spn=0.003413,0.010042&t=h&z=17&om=1

It was a 2 room K-8 school house at the SW corner of that road off of Highway 83.

KATIE CUT OFF OUR CHAT EVEN THOUGH SHE ASKED ME FOR STORIES OF MY LIFE!!!

Jesse, Tuesday, 2 October 2007 04:58 (sixteen years ago) link

She'll be sorry she missed this:

For our 8th grade graduation (when I was in 7th grade), Liz Claiborne delivered the commencement speech for our 2 graduates.

uhoh drunktime

ps that place ON THE SQUARE sucks, from what i've heard

river wolf, Tuesday, 2 October 2007 06:45 (sixteen years ago) link

Dunlays? They have the best vegetable plate you will ever find--grilled artichoke and asparagus, something seasonal, and a wild rice pilaf that makes me drool. Plus a small but totally decent wine list that is 1/2 price on Tuesdays!

Mostly I go to Dunlays on Clark, but it's the same food and stuff. Service is good on Clark.

Jesse, Tuesday, 2 October 2007 11:01 (sixteen years ago) link

80 degrees today. Oh yeah.

Jeff, Tuesday, 2 October 2007 11:11 (sixteen years ago) link

Dunlays ain't bad at all.

Many people see it as a symbol of gentrification on the square, and choose to ignore tasty wild rice pilaf.

I'm not as excited about the weather in the second picture as I am the first.

Three things about music:

I. This new Vic Chesnutt album is gooooood, especially if you are in the mood for sad bastard countryish music.
II. Doesn't it seem like every time Pfork reviews an album by a Chicago band that isn't superfamous, they give it a score from 6.5 to 7? I understand why, they're probably reviewing it as a favor or because they know the band, so they can't give it a bad review, but since the band isn't usually well known, they can't give it a great review. It's just funny.
III. My Q3 2007 mix is up on the blog: http://chilxorz.blogspot.com.

I have been drinking a lot of beer at home lately b/c I still have a bunch (Two-Hearted, Spotted Cow, Leine's Red, Negro Modelo, High Life) from my pseudo-housewarming party to get rid of.

Jordan, Tuesday, 2 October 2007 14:06 (sixteen years ago) link

We still have most of two bottles of vodka in our freezer, including the fancy vodka that dan brought. I need to get some mixers.

n/a, Tuesday, 2 October 2007 14:08 (sixteen years ago) link

We have orange sherbet. I could get some ginger ale and make a Dreamsicle coctail.

OOPS.

I meant to cut out just that little photo of the 7-11 and the pawn shop. Good morning.

I would drink this cocktail.

Would it be gross to use juice from a regular jar of Goya green olives to make a dirty martini?

KitCat, Tuesday, 2 October 2007 14:24 (sixteen years ago) link

Nick, the first three songs of your mix make me think of the Doors. Esp. the Witchcraft one.

Jordan, Tuesday, 2 October 2007 14:26 (sixteen years ago) link

Yeah, this quarter's mix is a little darker and mellower overall. Witchcraft is kinda Doors-y, though I mainly hear early Black Sabbath. They make a big deal about using '70s-era equipment, so I'm sure the resemblance is intentional.

My newest coworker won the LZ lottery, so she and her sister are going to London to see Led Zep in concert at Thanksgiving. John Bonham's son will be on drums.

JEALOUS!

KitCat, Tuesday, 2 October 2007 14:35 (sixteen years ago) link

Thats a great looking tracklisting Nick, I'll have to download it when I get home tonight. I've been hoping to check out that Dirty Projectors disc.

xpost Jesse I am sorry I cut off our chat, but you knew that I was past the first bottle of wine and working on taking care of our beer supply. Suddenly home improvement became very important to me and I went into my room to hang lamps. The chat was sacrificed. There's a rather large hole in my bedroom ceiling now, and no lamp. Lots of drywall dust, too.

Nope. That's how you make a dirty martini!

Jenny, Tuesday, 2 October 2007 15:00 (sixteen years ago) link

Pretty much the only martinis I can stomach are dirty ones.

That was the first Stars song I've heard, I know nothing about them except that you people seem to like them. I like how it goes into 5 at the end.

Jordan, Tuesday, 2 October 2007 15:05 (sixteen years ago) link

That's what I thought, Jenny. Just checkin' with my fact checkers.

KitCat, Tuesday, 2 October 2007 15:05 (sixteen years ago) link

I don't like a lot of Stars songs, they can get really adult contemporary at times. But that one song is good.
