my (at the time very tired) partner said his show was "too awkward" to enjoy, it made her too anxious. i said you must have watched the wrong episode and put on the episode where he talks you to sleep. she said "actually this is amazing" and fell asleep before it ended.― I'm a board man. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lsSZTjLYDJ0this is remarkably sweet; joe is completely and honestly freaked out and Colbert genuinely likes this guy and wants him to succeed

nice. just checked on my YouTubeTV account and 2 episodes have been added already.

'Kay well I'd seen and enjoyed some of his stand-up and filmed shorts in the past but only just got around to watching the show tonight and...this is something truly special.

Holy cow, I recognized him immediately and then thought 'no way is that actually hum' but sure enough, that was totally a Mark Borchardt cameo in the rat wars episode!

2nd ep of the new season really got me.

i never thought a show could have me as emotionally invested in a bean arch, but here we are.
the shitty baseball-playing yooper me from my childhood was cheering wildly during episode 2.

This is, of course, the best show.

Ep 3/4 were both great and misted me up a bit even as they undercut the emotion.

First two eps were solid. No idea if or how he could top the end of s1 but I'm eager to see him try.

this show nails the sweetest midwestern sentiments of things that could or could not be troubling.

friend told me that over the holidays he watched a few eps with his grandfather, who loved them and got hooked, raving that Joe was "very moral" and "should be deacon"

my partner L. _hated_ this show until I explained to her that no one is laughing at Joe and there's not some weird gloss of metahumor where we're all making fun of him and his world but that it is the squarest show on television and yet still very enjoyably sweet and funny. Then she liked it. She thought I was being mean by watching it and laughing!

I shared like the first 4-5 episodes with people I'm generally very in sync with wrt comedy and, well, let's say the response was muted at best. Disappointing, but this kinda is its own unique creature so it's hard to tell who's gonna vibe with ol' Joe.

Ah but then a friend texted me yesterday asking what the name of the show was with the guy who talked about rocks and breakfast so I may have been too hasty in assessing the reception. I have to remember that it takes time and patience to grow a bean arch.

the moment he found out he had enough money to buy ice cream and got the gallon pail of vanilla might have been the pinnacle of midwest nods in the show's run.

only watched a few eps but yes it's my favorite thing this year. outside of On Cinema $11
has anyone seen that YouTube series he did with Connor O'Malley called "How To Make it in USA"? 9 episodes, about 40 minutes total, but its really great. Pera is hilarious but Connor steals the show
― frogbs, Friday, 31 January 2020 14:30 (four years ago) link

There are certain performances and rhythms in this show that make me think of it as kind of like a Midwestern, live-action King of the Hill.

I realized this specifically in the episode where they go to Milwaukee.

ok it was always bothering me that this guy reminded me of **someone** and I finally figured out who it was
about 10 years ago there was this middle aged Southern guy named Steve Sutton who did a daily video blog even though he led a totally uneventful life and never really had anything to say. occasionally he would post little tutorials. a friend and I used to follow this guy religiously because there was something weirdly relaxing about watching him. it was like a daily moment of zen. anyway looking him up on YouTube again it looks like at least one of his videos got kind of famous

They just added this to the All 4 streaming service in the UK/Ireland. I've only watched two episodes: the Church announcements one and the very first one. I can't decide whether to just mill through the whole lot in one weekend or save them up for when I really need them. I just love it.

That seems like a good plan.
I had to convince my husband of the same thing. He was really worried that it was some super-extreme comedy of embarrassment. But he relaxed when I assured him nothing bad would happen to Joe.
