the aeropress, which i have only just seen now for the first time, is one of those things in the world that makes me react in a way that to causes me to worry about whether the levels of cynical douchebag in my system have reached critical and what to do abt that
― rrrobyn, Friday, 14 March 2008 02:46 (sixteen years ago) link
wait is aerobie a frisbee?
levels rising
wait what do you mean robyn?
― Hurting 2, Friday, 14 March 2008 02:47 (sixteen years ago) link
yeah aerobie is a magical flying ring that flies really fucking far
they were popular when I was around middle school age. They're actually a lot less fun than frisbees because they go so far.
― Hurting 2, Friday, 14 March 2008 02:48 (sixteen years ago) link
i always almost cut my palms on those things! on the off chance that i am throwing those things around
i like frisbee i don't like the organized frisbee game xpost
― rrrobyn, Friday, 14 March 2008 02:49 (sixteen years ago) link
but wait what did you mean about the aeropress making you feel like a cynical douchebag?
― Hurting 2, Friday, 14 March 2008 02:50 (sixteen years ago) link
i don't know why! it seems gimicky! and has a stupid name!
― rrrobyn, Friday, 14 March 2008 02:51 (sixteen years ago) link
i'm sad that my own awesome frisbee disappeared. i guess i leant it to someone. xpost to self - that organized frisbee game is called 'ultimate'. which i also don't know why i dislike so much.
fact: i almost bought a new stovetop espresso maker via internet today but then it was 6pm and i had to leave the office. maybe tomorrow.
― rrrobyn, Friday, 14 March 2008 02:54 (sixteen years ago) link
I just ordered one of those aeropress things. I've been thinking about getting a stovetop espresso maker for at least a month, and this was cheaper and looked worth trying.

report back! i don't want to be a cynical douchebag! at least not abt coffee!

I broke my French press a couple of weeks ago. And came this close...
> <
... to buying another one. Another customer at the fancy kitchen store talked me into the aeropress. It's a dumb name but it makes fantastic espresso and coffee. I even bought a bag of decaf beans because it's so good that I wanted an afternoon cup, but I can't handle caffeine after lunch, keeps me up at night.

Doesn't this happen with tea as well? Staying up? I don't really notice the difference. God, I want a latte now. :-( But can't as I am breastfeeding....
― stevienixed, Friday, 14 March 2008 07:01 (sixteen years ago) link
so why doesn't the aeropress come with a free aerobie is what i want to know i wld like this one in orange http://www.aerobie.com/ProductInfo/WebImages/Main/SqDisc-Main-ForWeb250.jpg

French Press = most overrated coffee device ever. Even regular drip coffee tastes better to me if made right.
― Hurting 2, Friday, 14 March 2008 15:16 (sixteen years ago) link
i agree which is why i'm curious about how/why this aerobie coffee machine is better aesthetically i like the stovetop stainless steel bialetti ones, and as i've said on this thread or another, i like the sound they make as they bubble up, it is the I AM COFFEE AND I AM HERE FOR YOU RIGHT NOW sound
― rrrobyn, Friday, 14 March 2008 15:31 (sixteen years ago) link
I would think the fact that it uses a vacuum to force the water through the grinds probably results in a better extraction of oils from the coffee without the nastiness that results from grinds either sitting in water too long or having too much water go through them.
― Hurting 2, Friday, 14 March 2008 15:35 (sixteen years ago) link
Also, disposable filters, easier cleaning.

if it's good enough for italians, it's good enough for me (from wikipedia)
In Italy, caffe latte is almost always prepared at home, for breakfast only. The coffee is brewed with a stovetop Moka and poured into a cup containing heated milk. (The Moka does not produce true espresso, but rather a double-strength coffee. Also, unlike the international latte drink, the milk in the Italian original is not foamed.)
― mizzell, Friday, 14 March 2008 16:07 (sixteen years ago) link
all this coffee threads today..i've had 4 cups already!!
― carne asada, Friday, 14 March 2008 16:10 (sixteen years ago) link
So the original latte is basically just a cafe au lait, where as the "international latte" is more like a weak-ass capuccino
― Hurting 2, Friday, 14 March 2008 16:12 (sixteen years ago) link
i'm being sold on the 'vacuum' idea but
i wld like to know how this much equipment is easier to clean than a stainless steel stovetop thing made of 3 parts
http://home.surewest.net/frcn/Coffee/AeroPress/Aeropress1e.jpg
oh wait: Clean up is quite easy, and maybe about as easy as you are likely to find in a coffee-making device. Lift the Chamber assembly off the cup and remove the Cap. Simply hold the assembly over a trash receptacle and press the plunger down as far as it will go. The Plunger's seal comes out the bottom of the Chamber and the puck is ejected from the chamber (as seen here) and is easily disposed of.
The high-quality polycarbonate material washes clean with little effort, and a quick wipe of all the parts with a soapy rag and a rinse in clean water is all that is needed.
and it's only $35! i'm kinda getting sold on it
― rrrobyn, Friday, 14 March 2008 16:12 (sixteen years ago) link
Wiki only half right. The international latte is available in italian coffee bars as a Latte Macchiato, stained milk, normally served in a tall glass, with handle, although in much smaller quantities. Most starbucks style cappuccinos would qualify as oversized Latte Macchiatos in italy.
xpost

More than 100 studies have explored the bioactivity of bisphenol A leachates from polycarbonates. Bisphenol A appeared to be released from polycarbonate animal cages into water at room temperature and that it may have been responsible for enlargement of the reproductive organs of female mice.An analysis of the literature on bisphenol A leachate low-dose effects by vom Saal and Hughes published in August 2005 seems to have found a suggestive correlation between the source of funding and the conclusion drawn. Industry funded studies tend to find no significant effects while government funded studies tend to find significant effects.

If you want to make good coffee, you have to be willing to do a little cleaning. Coffee leaves residues that get really nasty really fast.

Okay, I've used the aeropress for three days and it makes a good cup of coffee -- not ZOMG U R THE BEST COFFEE EVAR, but good. What they don't tell you is that it takes a lot of effort to press that plunger and get the water through the grounds and filter. It's not for people with, say, freakishly skinny forearms.
― Rock Hardy, Thursday, 20 March 2008 17:51 (sixteen years ago) link
how do i get bigger forearms?

I only just now saw this thread... I've had an Aeropress for over a year now and like it a lot though you really want to make sure you're using good beans and a good grind. It won't magically make mediocre coffee good.
