I agree this was really great TV. Probably the most entertained I've ever been watching this show.

so cool that it came down to the reveal on the last answer. I wanted james to have it right so we could get another episode. the right guy won though. kinda lame that 2/3 place got 250k each, 3rd shoulda been like 100k or something. james earned more money and outplayed brad so badly + he brought roughly 60% of the good jokes and entertainment and should be paid accordingly. brad just looked embarrassed to be there by like halfway through the first episode.

omg what did you type to find this gif? (Spottie), Wednesday, 15 January 2020 04:24 (four years ago) link

so did ken predict james would get the wrong answer? i'm too dum to understand why he didn't bet anything

symsymsym, Wednesday, 15 January 2020 04:43 (four years ago) link

because James was obviously going to bet everything and if he did & hit then Ken couldn't catch up even if he did bet it all. so it made no difference what he wagered there. actually getting it right was pure style

frogbs, Wednesday, 15 January 2020 04:49 (four years ago) link

thanks!

symsymsym, Wednesday, 15 January 2020 04:52 (four years ago) link

btw that "Math Equations to Roman Numerals to Initials to Names" category was hilarious, they definitely dialed it up for these guys. I got the Mark McGwire one though

pretty cool that The Kinks are the Village Green Preservation Society was the answer to a $2000 question. maybe that album isn't as well known as I thought??

frogbs, Wednesday, 15 January 2020 04:56 (four years ago) link

loved ken guessing charles lindbergh as a no-chance answer in that numerals category

symsymsym, Wednesday, 15 January 2020 05:05 (four years ago) link

I was very surprised Village Green /Kinks was a $2000 question too. Maybe they were going by age and it being british? I have no clue.

Yerac, Wednesday, 15 January 2020 06:52 (four years ago) link

outside of music nerddom, it isn't known at all!

james was pretty damn good on the music questions today.

i laughed at how none of them knew what Kanye's new album was called. it was probably filmed around the time it dropped, too.

culture of mayordom (voodoo chili), Wednesday, 15 January 2020 16:16 (four years ago) link

I bumped into Ken Jennings’ +1 for the tapings just minutes after last night’s ep aired, and he said the lead time was much shorter than usual for these specials. The Kanye had probably been out for a month or more?

(also I’d guess they’re all busy studying existing general knowledge for months beforehand, not too deep into current pop releases)

i remember yelling! "good day sir!" at the screen and was shocked that none of them got that one lol

culture of mayordom (voodoo chili), Wednesday, 15 January 2020 17:04 (four years ago) link

yeah!! I thought for sure guys as online as James & Ken would know that one. I also got "nitwit", the 2 cybersecurity ones, "Jeet Kune Do", and the Kanye one of course

I know this tweet is out of date now but I still thought it was pretty funny at the time

If you like this show and you'd like to see it have a good showing in the poll (running in February) all you need to do is submit a ballot including it and your other favorites (4 minimum, 25 maximum, organized by your favorite to least favorite) to forksclovetofu at gmail by end of day today. It'll take five minutes; get to it!

The champion over-explaining her FJ answer on Monday's episode is some of the most endearing comedy I've seen in a while.

They started rerunning the original Jennings eps today.

Actually they're just re-airing the first Jennings ep today, and the rest of this week they'll have the All-Star tourney w/him & Holtzhauer & Brad from earlier this year.

"...And the Gods Socially Distanced" (C. Grisso/McCain), Monday, 4 May 2020 17:03 (four years ago) link

Have they run out of new episodes? There was nothing at the end of Friday’s to indicate that they were showing old stuff this week.

A White, White Gay (cryptosicko), Monday, 4 May 2020 17:19 (four years ago) link

i think so. They stopped taping in mid-march and are typically about 6 weeks ahead

turn the jawhatthefuckever on (One Eye Open), Monday, 4 May 2020 17:38 (four years ago) link

I believe there’s a tournament or two in the can, probably holding them to space out remaining new content

Clay, Monday, 4 May 2020 21:53 (four years ago) link

Pretty dumb to do first-and-last on Jennings instead of the whole run imo. If this ended tomorrow, they'd still take months to get new eps into the pipeline (it's only been so short lately because of Trebek's health absences), might as well milk as many ~events~ as you can

Elon's musk (sic), Tuesday, 5 May 2020 02:55 (four years ago) link

They probably can't show all of them due to the horrific racism and sexism no doubt contained in the clues and categories crassly supplied by the Jeopardy writers in those less enlightened times of <checks notes> 2004.

Clearly no one is traveling to be on the show. Every single contestant this week is from the L.A. area

soaring skrrrtpeggios (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Wednesday, 16 September 2020 17:09 (four years ago) link

Yeah, and they said on Monday that the returning champ would not be able to appear right away (presumably due to travel issues/safety).

"...And the Gods Socially Distanced" (C. Grisso/McCain), Wednesday, 16 September 2020 17:21 (four years ago) link

Yeah I haven't watched any from this week yet, waiting to get a handful bundled up to power through.

they’re starting to expand the contestant pool to the rest of the west coast - someone i know in seattle made it to the second round of zoom auditions yesterday
