dream date!

Utterly addicted to this show after a couple friends recommended it. My wife and I blew through the Tokyo episodes on NF in less than a week and had to find the newest ones as there's no way I could live with that cliffhanger for two months. I think part 3 has probably been the most interesting of this season so far, and I love the advice-giving castmate mentioned above
What do you all recommend for the next season of TH to watch? I imagine this was probably discussed before but I'm a little scared to read spoilers of prev seasons
― Vinnie, Tuesday, 4 February 2020 15:25 (four years ago) link
Start at the beginning (which is a total hassle because it's not on NF incl. Japan) but it is not only the best season but the panel constantly refers back to the original series. There's also a 2 hour film "Closing Door" that takes place immediately after season 1 ends which is pretty good. But yeah chronological is a good start. In my opinion this current series is the best of the past 3. I'd rank them:
BGND + Closing DoorBGiTCTokyo 19-20ONDAS

ugh, I STILL have not finished the original TH. It's hard to pick it back up. Netflix needs to purchase it.
― Yerac, Tuesday, 4 February 2020 19:44 (four years ago) link
Ok I'll look for that, thanks. I don't know if this is common among TH fans but we started skipping the panel segments after 6 episodes or so. It was a combo of the panel making a bunch of references to prev seasons we didn't understand + we became impatient to get back to the action + we occasionally found the panel boring. But I'm regretting that a little (especially after one moment this season where a castmate is affected by the panel's thoughts when that castmate watches the show) and I'll probably go back and rewatch their thoughts on key moments
― Vinnie, Tuesday, 4 February 2020 23:43 (four years ago) link
when i first started watching (I started with Aloha State) I was skipping the panel because I didn't get them. But seriously...they are probably the best part of the show. Start watching tham all.
― Yerac, Tuesday, 4 February 2020 23:45 (four years ago) link
Yeah as Carey says: once you realize the panel is the best part of the show you will regret that later. Plus a lot of alumni show up (and rejoin as cast, some several times!)
― Jersey Al (Albert R. Broccoli), Tuesday, 4 February 2020 23:49 (four years ago) link
And not to say the current season is "bad" necessarily, it's just that TH has become a huge vehicle for the castmembers so there is a lot of kayfabe going on (you learn a lot about this towards the end of BGitC), whereas in BGND (my abs. fave), the vibe/action is much more pure.
― Jersey Al (Albert R. Broccoli), Tuesday, 4 February 2020 23:51 (four years ago) link
The degree of kayfabe (I had to look this word up, btw - useful word) in the show is another thing I am very curious about. There was a moment in a episode where a character outside the house was surprised at hearing some news, but then, there was a camera set up so obviously they knew something was going on. There's some other small important moments in the house that are caught on camera and I have to wonder if it's serendipitous or whether anything is restaged. Overall, the producers do a good job of making things seem real/natural. But again, don't really want to go looking for articles that reveal the nuts and bolts and then spoil earlier stuff for myself!
― Vinnie, Wednesday, 5 February 2020 00:34 (four years ago) link
I did not know this word either. Was it Lauren Tsai that talked about how only a couple of hours were filmed each day?
― Yerac, Wednesday, 5 February 2020 01:10 (four years ago) link
That wouldn't surprise me. Seems almost all recordings in the house are done in the morning or at night, when everyone is around. And the cameras sometimes track people as they move inside the house so a director/crew must be working live at those times? I imagine no matter how "real" this show is, it must be a nightmare to film and edit

Assuming this thread can act as a catch-all for Japanese reality television, it seems right to announce here that the new Ainori Love Wagon: African Journey is now up on Netflix! We watched most of it elsewhere - just three episodes remain. It is as harrowing and compelling as ever.
― tangenttangent, Monday, 2 March 2020 21:44 (four years ago) link
JFC that was the most harrowing episode ever. There's no way the rest of the house will be the same from here on out.
― Jersey Al (Albert R. Broccoli), Tuesday, 31 March 2020 03:50 (four years ago) link
...worse than the Cheri blow-up in Aloha State, worse than the Misaki-Natsumi fight in BGitC, with just some added dread & anxiety & just sheer cringe.
― Jersey Al (Albert R. Broccoli), Tuesday, 31 March 2020 04:17 (four years ago) link
I haven't seen the last couple episodes of the Tokyo season, but I did want to thank you Al for recommending the BGND season, which was indeed hard to find but has been a godsend in these stressful times. We watched about 5 episodes a night, finishing with Closing Door yesterday, and it blows the Tokyo season away. Just seems a matter of good fortune/good casting that several of the initial group end up with such strong connections with each other, that it set the tone for the house the whole series. I think it's evidenced by the fact that former cast members visit back a lot - their bonds seem much stronger than the friendships in the newest season. Of course, it was also a much longer period of time. Tecchan's journey in particular was also really great to watch

Yikes, yes that was an intense episode. And not between the characters I was expecting
― Vinnie, Thursday, 2 April 2020 14:42 (four years ago) link
Vinnie, you will be happy you binged BGND before today's episode... surprisingly loving, wholesome and touching tribute from seemingly out of nowhere. Washed the nasty taste of last week's episode away.
― Jersey Al (Albert R. Broccoli), Monday, 6 April 2020 23:37 (four years ago) link
ohh, i think we get the new section tomorrow.
― Yerac, Tuesday, 7 April 2020 00:29 (four years ago) link
I feel very remiss that I never finished the first series.
I'm thinking of watching it again!
― Jersey Al (Albert R. Broccoli), Tuesday, 7 April 2020 00:33 (four years ago) link
Finish it Yerac! I think some of the best moments happen near the end. Perfect for these times
― Vinnie, Tuesday, 7 April 2020 00:41 (four years ago) link
it's so hard streaming/downloading it sometimes. we forget about it. I keep hoping they get it on netflix to make it easy. I have no clue where I am in it. i probably just have to look back in this thread to figure it out because we never ended up picking it back up.
― Yerac, Tuesday, 7 April 2020 00:46 (four years ago) link
uh.. Uke seems to have gone on a regiment after the last series of episodes.
― Yerac, Tuesday, 7 April 2020 00:49 (four years ago) link
eden kai.
Agree that it was really difficult to find the last few episodes of the first season, but we managed in the end. Tecchan was one of the all-time housemates.
New season part up, hooray! I have no idea if the allusions ARB is making will reveal themselves in this part or next? It showed up as a next play after finishing Sion Sono's 'Forest of Love', which was...ominous?
― tangenttangent, Tuesday, 7 April 2020 21:11 (four years ago) link
Well especially as the main character looked a bit like Tokui, who has *dramatic music* mysteriously vanished! ;)
― ban laggy jazzer (imago), Tuesday, 7 April 2020 21:12 (four years ago) link
Episode 38 is the one that was very dark and super negative. Episode 39 aired yesterday and was much better. The new housemate is a throwback (in many ways) to the original vibe of BGND.
― Jersey Al (Albert R. Broccoli), Tuesday, 7 April 2020 21:38 (four years ago) link
The stuff we're mentioning will be part 4, but part 3 was very engrossing!
Was the new housemate in 39 ever featured incidentally in a previous season? Seems like he might have been, given his ties to previous cast. Yes, the tribute in the last ep was nice. I hadn't even known he died until I started looking up the BGND cast to see what they're doing now. Seems like Oji had the highest-profile career of the bunch!
― Vinnie, Wednesday, 8 April 2020 02:13 (four years ago) link
Also, I noticed that a couple housemates in the last episode wore masks inside without mentioning being sick and I'm wondering if we're running into when they would have been aware of COVID...
― Vinnie, Wednesday, 8 April 2020 02:15 (four years ago) link
just reached Kai's stand-up show, and tbh, if anything in a later episode is more harrowing than that, then it should probably be taken off Netflix for the common good
― ban laggy jazzer (imago), Thursday, 9 April 2020 22:07 (four years ago) link
in my post above, i was referencing eden kai's current instagram. he looks different.
― Yerac, Thursday, 9 April 2020 22:19 (four years ago) link
awww Ruka had such a good ending.
― Yerac, Friday, 10 April 2020 00:19 (four years ago) link
we have reached Kai's second stand-up and I want him kicked off the show. I want Yamachan to personally haul him out of Terrace House by the collar and chuck his belongings out of the window after him
― ban laggy jazzer (imago), Friday, 10 April 2020 19:52 (four years ago) link
the men in the house right now (ep 35) are a weird creep, the worst fucking comedian in history and some pathetic dweeb who's probably also a creep. get rid of them all and bring back peppe or just find someone to love hana ;_; ffs
― ban laggy jazzer (imago), Friday, 10 April 2020 19:58 (four years ago) link
ah OK fine I guess I approve
but your stand-up, it has to go
― ban laggy jazzer (imago), Friday, 10 April 2020 20:15 (four years ago) link
ok, i just realize there is a guy named Kai and not just Eden Kai. Only past 3 episodes of the new batch.

it was awesome how fast yamachan ID'd Tupas.

OK fuck I don't know how episode 38 could even be more harrowing than episode 37 but holy shit these are some dark, dark men, get rid omg
― ban laggy jazzer (imago), Saturday, 11 April 2020 00:10 (four years ago) link
I did have a moment like you while watching 37 where I realized how terrible the guys are. I guess we haven't seen much of the third guy yet

Terrace House has suspended filming...noooooooo.
― Yerac, Monday, 13 April 2020 15:01 (four years ago) link
and how has no one told Kai that he should not be a comedian? I don't even know what that was.
― Yerac, Monday, 13 April 2020 15:02 (four years ago) link
how many episodes did it get up to before everything was suspended?
kai was obviously always an idiot stoner wastrel who should never have gotten through vetting
― ban laggy jazzer (imago), Monday, 13 April 2020 15:04 (four years ago) link
40 episodes.
And Ryo totally had a gf outside of the house right?
