YouTube has been suggesting Nikki Glaser to me a lot lately and she's very funny

She's often very funny and has been for years, but she seems mired in this sort of self-consciously shock territory. Like, her shows are always funny, but sometimes I want more than jokes about sex and other bodily functions.

I only recently discovered Martin Urbano, who is very funny, but I feel Covid really curtailed his rise.

I've only seen Nikki Glaser via some kind of clip show she had on Comedy Central or Canadian Comedy Central but she's very funny in those.

His timing and delivery is certainly still there. His material feels grimier now of course; he's as much an imperfect vessel as you could ask for.

lol I thought you were going to give me, like, deep cuts or something, not these cats that have been doing it for decades. Oswalt is smart but I've never heard a particularly funny set of his (as enjoyable as he is); too much barely-jokes nerd ranting (a la David Cross). And Bamford, I've honestly never been on her wavelength. Don't think I know Jackie Kashian or Chris Fleming, but I think I've seen Aparna Nancherla be funny. I saw an amusing set from Robin Tran the other day. I like Jena Friedman a lot, she's apparently working on a new set right now.

OTM. I hadn’t heard of Kashian before I saw her a couple months ago — opening for Maria Bamford! — and she killed. And Bamford’s set was brilliant (and I’m not just saying that because of the Amon Duul II / Trout Mask joke).

The two times in my life I have laughed the hardest were the first time I heard Richard Pryor’s Craps album in 1991; and seeing Patton Oswalt a couple years ago. The comparison of Oswalt to David Cross doesn’t really make sense to me: sure, they both have a “nerd culture” thing, but Cross is angry, and bitter to the point that he forgets to make sure the shit is funny. Oswalt is angry, rarely bitter, and always sticks the landing, often unpredictably.

he's got some okay thoughts on gender fluidity but they're not funny or insightful.

David Cross is very funny but he comes across as such a tremendous asshole, it’s hard to enjoy his stand up most of the time

Btw worth pointing out that Louies last few specials before he was a confirmed jackoff were pretty bad. His last one had a 10 minute bit that was just about how much he liked Magic Mike. I don’t think I laughed a single time. Dude hit a wall pretty hard.

The only Cross bit I've heard that I thought was really funny was his bit about going to Per Se or some other Michelin starred restaurant in New York. Oswalt, I recently came across someone citing his bit about killing George Lucas as an infant (a riff on killing baby Hitler) as a highlight, but it just wasn't funny to me. Now, if I cared at all about how those Star Wars prequels turned out, in a you-ruined-my-childhood sense, I could see it as cathartic.

Bamford definitely seems really smart to me. Come to think of it, she and Oswalt were in that Comedians of Comedy doc, but I don't remember much about either. Zach Galifianakis and Brian Posehn were in it, too. Galifianakis, I think his standup and other bits are pretty funny. Posehn, he's another Mr. Show alum that I love on Mr. Show and not really anywhere else.

I do think John Mulaney is still super sharp. He's touring, but I don't think I want to see him at the Enormo Dome.
