I especially like the tympani and orchestra interlude, but there were a lot of memorable scenes

xp - including Esther’s voiceover during the plane landing, the detailed interior examination of the engine of the car during the carpet crawlers sexual fantasy, the bull attack which was frightening, and the two youngest children narrating intimate aspects of the adults’ story

that he cast himself and his wife (and his children) as the main characters added an interesting layer
I need to watch at least one more 2019 film I feel like giving a vote to to make a ballot but I feel like I should so i can be the other Alita voter alongside Brad.
the Battle Angel Alita adaptation Alita: Battle Angel is on DVD, blu-ray, 3D blu-ray, 4K Ultra HD Blu-Ray, streaming on HBO Now, HBO Go and DirectTV with subs, and for rent from AMC On Demand for $5.99. (It can also be bought digitally for twice the price of the blu-ray, which itself is 20c cheaper than the DVD.)

the fresnel lens is beautiful, as is the Cape Forchu setting
― Dan S, Wednesday, 25 March 2020 01:36 (four years ago) link
I imagine the claustrophobic feel works for home viewing, but the big screen / oppressive sound design of The Lighthouse made for one of the best theatrical experiences I had last year, even in a multiplex with no masking.
― Dollarmite Is My Name (sic), Wednesday, 25 March 2020 01:59 (four years ago) link
wish I had seen it in a theater, the cinematography and the sound are incredible. the story is more abstract than The Witch but is equally mesmerizing
― Dan S, Wednesday, 25 March 2020 02:14 (four years ago) link
the dance they did while drunk was incredible, and it went by so fast:
“Come, all you boys who wish to hearHow we got up to the woods last yearInto the sleigh we jacked our bootsOur teamster pointed to the big blue spruce”
and then the slow dance, the near kiss, the fight, and the confessions

Long Day’s Journey Into Night has a very enigmatic story. In some ways it feels like a re-envisioning of Kaili Blues with additional dimensions and alternate views
― Dan S, Friday, 27 March 2020 00:37 (four years ago) link
I like the decrepit rainy Kaili setting, the decaying rooms and hallways and outdoor spaces, and the changing palette of colors
― Dan S, Friday, 27 March 2020 00:39 (four years ago) link
We saw that the other night. Was a horribly-written dull mess for 70 minutes but the final hour redeemed it somewhat. Director is still young and clearly has ideas, and it was beautiful to look at throughout.

Long Day’s Journey Into Night has a very enigmatic story. It feels similar to Kaili Blues with but additional dimensions. It is surprisingly romantic.

Odds that I'm going to have any time to meaningful plug away at any 2019 blind spots over the next week and a half are pretty nil, so I'll submit a ballot sometime this weekend.

For people who are having trouble getting to an enthusiastic ten:
Break your ballot into the would-be-numbered section
Then after a para break, fill it out with a B-features section of things you liked but don't consider top-ten material, and I'll give these ten points each
And if you really want to throw some bones around, go ahead and include a C-tier for one-pointers.

I'll try to watch at least one more 2019 movie that I think I will like before ballots are due, otherwise I'm giving points to Dora and the Lost City of Gold

I really liked Little Joe. It was my kind of horror film. Like with Lourdes it feels like the director walks a line and leaves it up to the viewer to decide what is really going on

I'll vote for what others vote for, and a lot of ilxors are from the US, but can we drop the idea that the US release date matters? It's a South Korean director, and his films always premiere in Europe.
