I got a refund but I applied it toward my quarterly estimated payments.

Mine paid me back for the 1k i loaned a friend
― genital giant (Neanderthal), Wednesday, 15 April 2020 19:38 (four years ago) link
ohhhh ... did you try entering the refund amount as "0"?
― sarahell, Wednesday, 15 April 2020 19:38 (four years ago) link
And the 300 i loaned another friend's business. So it's p much gone already but it did what i wanted it to.
My friend also got her federal unemployment. Virginia seems on top of it.
Florida? They're sending fed unemployment by paper checks every week.
Rick Scott left quite a legacy
― genital giant (Neanderthal), Wednesday, 15 April 2020 19:39 (four years ago) link
WmC: as in, if I were you, I would try with the actual refund amount from 2019, and then try with "0" (in case they map the field onto the amount actually refunded to you). If neither works, then my guess is that you have filed "too recently" to be in their system right now.
― sarahell, Wednesday, 15 April 2020 19:40 (four years ago) link
xp Neanderthal -- oh, don't get me started on California! The much promised Unemployment for self-employed people --- they are saying you can't even apply for another 2 weeks until they get their system in place
― sarahell, Wednesday, 15 April 2020 19:41 (four years ago) link
xp - I can try that tomorrow I guess. The site told me I've tried too many times today and I'm blocked out until then.
― herds of unmasked cletuses (WmC), Wednesday, 15 April 2020 19:41 (four years ago) link
Thanks for the advice, sarahell, you're helping me a lot more than the guy I actually pay. (not being sarcastic)
― herds of unmasked cletuses (WmC), Wednesday, 15 April 2020 19:43 (four years ago) link

― herds of unmasked cletuses (WmC), Wednesday, 15 April 2020 19:45 (four years ago) link
hahaha i would give a discount to all ilxors!
― sarahell, Wednesday, 15 April 2020 19:49 (four years ago) link
if you enter zero in the amount owed or amount refunded, the site throws an error... since I had that problem, I poked around online and I'm not alone. maybe they'll fix it sometime soon.

Silby, the federal filing deadline is extended but check with your state as well. Normally your state return requires numbers from the federal one.
Hereabouts state returns need to be done May 1 so we need to compete the federal form first

So apparently anybody who filed and OWED taxes in 2018 and 2019 and paid via EFT didn't get refunds as they legally can't use that bank account for stimulus. I guess because different authorizations legally.
And you're supposed to be able to enter your info in, but lots of people got that "Please try again" message suggesting they couldn't confirm their eligibility. IRS claims there were server congestion issues and that this caused an error message, and that was being used as the "default" error message. And might go away when you try again when its less busy.
Wtf? Good "default" error message guys.
― genital giant (Neanderthal), Thursday, 16 April 2020 00:01 (four years ago) link
The error message I got implied they had no record of me filing taxes in 2018. Cool cool

“Payment Status Not Available.” Just tried again.
Also they don’t have clear info on how to enter your ssn and address. Dashes? Commas? Apartment number? Who knows!
― treeship., Thursday, 16 April 2020 00:34 (four years ago) link
Also is this going to be mailed to my old apartment?
― treeship., Thursday, 16 April 2020 00:36 (four years ago) link
Yeah, I got the same 'Payment status not available' message + no direct deposit thus far. I expect basically nothing from these fuckos so I will be neither disappointed nor surprised if the money never comes through.

This is where I'm at. OTOH my mom emailed this morning to say "I got my direct deposit. Whoo hoo. I still despise Trump."

This thing about how if using a tax preparer makes things harder?
https://www.washingtonpost.com/business/2020/04/16/coronavirus-cares-stimulus-check
I dunno. I've only ever used hrblock and things arrived fine. We haven't even filed yet; they went by last year's.
― Fleetwood Machiavelli (Ye Mad Puffin), Thursday, 16 April 2020 23:26 (four years ago) link
That is infuriating because it's not a new scenario. It also cropped up in 2008's Stimulus, but they warned people about that issue then.
Not a peep this year. I looked to see if they addressed it this year.....like what you expect all the civilians to remember fuckin' 12 years ago?
― genital giant (Neanderthal), Friday, 17 April 2020 00:00 (four years ago) link
Apparently you have to have filed your 2019 return already? I sent our stuff to my tax person in March but haven’t checked if anything’s been filed since they pushed the due date til July as I am in no hurry to pay money
― joygoat, Friday, 17 April 2020 04:33 (four years ago) link
i didn't file mine and I got it.
― genital giant (Neanderthal), Friday, 17 April 2020 04:46 (four years ago) link
i owe as well and no way i'm paying in advance now that they bumped
Neanderthal’s explanation about not being able to get a direct deposit to the same account from which you had money withdrawn from taxes owed is what I suspected for why I hadn’t gotten a direct deposit and why the irs site said it needed more info from me, good to see someone corroborate that

Weird, I’m pretty sure that I wrote a physical check for taxes last year because i didn’t want to make it easy for them, plus I remember really pondering the implications of writing FUCK MNUCHIN in the memo spot (I decided against it).

Our deposit came through yesterday. My partner and I are incredibly lucky in that both of our jobs haven't been impacted & likely wont be (shes literally involved in manufacturing chemicals being used in covid vaccine research), so we just sent a big chunk of it to the local food bank.

I haven't lived in the usa for almost six years but I have to file american taxes every year anyway (because the usa is a bullshit country). am I gonna get this ca$h too? haven't filed 2019 taxes yet though (the deadlines are a lot different if you're not a current resident) so maybe I gotta do that first.

― TikTok to the (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Saturday, 18 April 2020 16:25 (four years ago) link
yeah we have to file every year thanks to the great law that distinguishes the usa from like every other country in the world and makes all income of us citizens taxable by the usa, even if you've never lived in the usa

technically speaking, the eligibility for this "refundable tax credit" is based on your earnings in 2020, but they're advancing it to you using your 2019 income (or if you haven't filed, your 2018 income). but they've said if you get the stimulus this year and you technically shouldn't have been eligible based on 2020, they won't make you pay it back.
― genital giant (Neanderthal), Saturday, 18 April 2020 17:34 (four years ago) link
likewise if you find yourself ineligible this year (ie you made like 123,000 in 2019 when you filed), and then based on your 2020 income, you should have been (maybe you got laid off this year nad made like 50,000), you'll get the "refundable tax credit" of $1,200/$2,400 next year.
― genital giant (Neanderthal), Saturday, 18 April 2020 17:35 (four years ago) link

you aren't eligible for foreign income exclusion? or do you make so much money that some of it is taxable? The foreign exclusion is pretty large
