Weird, I’m pretty sure that I wrote a physical check for taxes last year because i didn’t want to make it easy for them, plus I remember really pondering the implications of writing FUCK MNUCHIN in the memo spot (I decided against it).

Glad to see some of y'all are getting mad paid. Allow me to live vicariously through tales of yr newfound riches.

That fuckin website is still all *confused shrug*, mailbox is still empty, I'm never gonna see that shit.

Our deposit came through yesterday. My partner and I are incredibly lucky in that both of our jobs haven't been impacted & likely wont be (shes literally involved in manufacturing chemicals being used in covid vaccine research), so we just sent a big chunk of it to the local food bank.

My payment status is also "Not Available", even though Ifile every year (though not 2019 yet). I suspect I'm gonna have to work a bit to get my 1200

Woot! Down payment on a sweet '08 Toyota Corolla!

Maybe enough for some bitchin rims as well.

I get the status not available message too even though I definitely filed taxes for 2018.

I haven't lived in the usa for almost six years but I have to file american taxes every year anyway (because the usa is a bullshit country). am I gonna get this ca$h too? haven't filed 2019 taxes yet though (the deadlines are a lot different if you're not a current resident) so maybe I gotta do that first.

Joey Corona (Euler), Saturday, 18 April 2020 16:23 (four years ago) link

if you filed last year, yeah

TikTok to the (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Saturday, 18 April 2020 16:25 (four years ago) link

yeah we have to file every year thanks to the great law that distinguishes the usa from like every other country in the world and makes all income of us citizens taxable by the usa, even if you've never lived in the usa

Joey Corona (Euler), Saturday, 18 April 2020 16:32 (four years ago) link

shame on you for not being a corporation

Nhex, Saturday, 18 April 2020 17:31 (four years ago) link

technically speaking, the eligibility for this "refundable tax credit" is based on your earnings in 2020, but they're advancing it to you using your 2019 income (or if you haven't filed, your 2018 income). but they've said if you get the stimulus this year and you technically shouldn't have been eligible based on 2020, they won't make you pay it back.

genital giant (Neanderthal), Saturday, 18 April 2020 17:34 (four years ago) link

likewise if you find yourself ineligible this year (ie you made like 123,000 in 2019 when you filed), and then based on your 2020 income, you should have been (maybe you got laid off this year nad made like 50,000), you'll get the "refundable tax credit" of $1,200/$2,400 next year.

genital giant (Neanderthal), Saturday, 18 April 2020 17:35 (four years ago) link

all income of us citizens taxable by the usa, even if you've never lived in the usa

you aren't eligible for foreign income exclusion? or do you make so much money that some of it is taxable? The foreign exclusion is pretty large

sarahell, Saturday, 18 April 2020 17:39 (four years ago) link

yeah my partner and I have yet to pass the exclusion mark. It is still definitely a PITA to file every year though

dip to dup (rob), Saturday, 18 April 2020 19:06 (four years ago) link

Euler is in France though, so the size of the exclusion might not seem so large compared to Canada (since it's in USD)

dip to dup (rob), Saturday, 18 April 2020 19:08 (four years ago) link

No I don’t make much money! We don’t have to pay taxes now, for that reason, but we do have to file each year, and if we started making bank then the USA would get a cut. Also we have to deal with FATCA too, so the USA knows how money I make in France.

Joey Corona (Euler), Saturday, 18 April 2020 19:21 (four years ago) link

so, you're annoyed that you have to file forms?

sarahell, Saturday, 18 April 2020 20:38 (four years ago) link

also fyi -- i can try and dig up the notice in question, but the IRS did say a week or so ago, that the stimulus payments aren't all coming at once, and they are paying the lower income people first, so if you aren't "in the system" yet, it could be that your income (from the most recent year filed, either 2018 or 2019) is on the higher end of the eligibility scale.

sarahell, Saturday, 18 April 2020 20:40 (four years ago) link

hmm. by most standards we are well-off but got it immediately. Could possibly be because of kids?

molon labe, kemo sabe (Ye Mad Puffin), Saturday, 18 April 2020 20:42 (four years ago) link

idk -- I haven't filed for 2019 yet, and I got my payment Wednesday, but I had direct deposit info from 2018 from a refund because I was super careful about paying enough in estimated payments so I wouldn't have to owe.

sarahell, Saturday, 18 April 2020 20:44 (four years ago) link

i make right under the pay rate that gets phased out, so I'm not sure why they paid me so early.

I did have two friends get paid just today.

genital giant (Neanderthal), Saturday, 18 April 2020 21:05 (four years ago) link

I suspect direct deposit is a factor. I always get a paper check, so will probably have to wait until Trump personally signs however many millions he has piled up on his desk.

Mario Meatwagon (Moodles), Saturday, 18 April 2020 21:28 (four years ago) link

sarahel—-I guess yes? Forms are no fun! And I have a slew of them as a French resident. The USA is the only country that enforces a right to tax non-resident citizens on their foreign income. That’s bullshit. We have to repost everything financial to the USA government despite their having nothing to do with our lives (we have a USA bank still but receive no income there). For that reason I’d have expected that we wouldn’t get a USA stimulus check but it seems that we will.

My mom FINALLY got her unemployment claim filed. Assuming it doesn't get comedy denied, she'll make more money in 4 months than she has in decades.

Which is good cos otherwise I'll have to pay her rent until social security arrives, and the medical bills

Unparalleled Elegance (Old Lunch), Tuesday, 21 April 2020 22:21 (four years ago) link

Progress! Today when I went to the IRS page, instead of status not available, it asked me for my tax return and bank routing info. Now the payment should be coming although I don't have a date yet. I see the tool had maintenance last night, I'm wondering if that was a factor in the change.

Mario Meatwagon (Moodles), Friday, 24 April 2020 13:58 (four years ago) link

Cool, site's finally working for me, too. Now I just have to dig my '18 tax materials out of whatever the hell box they're in. Probably get the check before I find them, honestly.

Unparalleled Elegance (Old Lunch), Friday, 24 April 2020 14:14 (four years ago) link

Okay, lol, I realized I could get the info I needed from the IRS site, went that route, entered everything into the seemingly-functional stimulus portal...aaaaaaand could not be completed due to technical difficulties. Fuck off.

How could the IRS ever have been expected to account for something like this, I ask you.

Unparalleled Elegance (Old Lunch), Friday, 24 April 2020 17:09 (four years ago) link

we should privatize it, just like the post office -- give their powers to a more efficient, competent private corporation.
