Nah, high school-wise, I went to Loyola on 83rd street. I did goto grade school at St.David's (home of Robert "Preppy Murderer" Chambers, just a class ahead of me), which sent most of its students off to posh-o prep schools (self excluded, as I wanted to stay in NYC).

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Wednesday, 1 June 2005 14:19 (nineteen years ago) link

I don't know how similar I am to other ILXors

- TV workin' dude
- northern Illinois born-and-raised, Irish and Russian, NYC/upstate NY college educated
- Saint Etienne, Royal Trux, free jazz fan
- six years of high school, the last two at college prep
- allergic to peanuts
- shaved head

what i've noticed in common w/ mike a (again, if he's still here):

(a) born & raised in central NJ
(b) family roots in philadelphia & eastern europe
(c) went to rutgers undergrad (and wrote for the papers there)
(d) spent time at catholic law schools (him, st. louis univ., me, villanova)
(e) love young marble giants and cheesy synth-pop/new wave
(f) non-native NYers who spent time in NYC (though i think that i'm much more ambivalent about NYC -- and NYCers -- than he is)

did robert chambers honour the fire?!?

Eisbär (llamasfur), Wednesday, 1 June 2005 14:28 (nineteen years ago) link

He lived up to the band's name all too well.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 1 June 2005 14:29 (nineteen years ago) link

Oops and I went to the same high school! I also determined recently that Spencer and I have similar tastes in both women and music.

jaymc (jaymc), Wednesday, 1 June 2005 14:31 (nineteen years ago) link

I can't think of anyone, really. Can anyone relate to this -- ?
- Middle-aged, overweight, balding
- Married for a long time, with a nearly grown-up kid
- Strange back-and-forth upbringing between SoCal and Mississippi has left me feeling totally rootless.

Rock Hardy (Rock Hardy), Wednesday, 1 June 2005 14:39 (nineteen years ago) link

margus kiis, estonian rock critic, and I have both sailed around the cape of good hope from luderitz to durban, though he did it 3 1/2 hours faster than i, the motherfucker.

t\'\'t (t\'\'t), Wednesday, 1 June 2005 14:44 (nineteen years ago) link

Allyzay and I:

a) have the same cat
b) have the same furniture
c) are wildly amused by the same random radio stations discovered by travelling south on the NJ turnpike
d) have a balcony that looks over the river towards Georgetown U. and the National Cathedral
e) have the same mailing address

The rest of you are all from another planet as far as I can tell.

Ned, you're starting to sound like a Care Bear. Stop it.

luna (luna.c), Wednesday, 1 June 2005 15:38 (nineteen years ago) link

Careful, luna. Come the next full moon he'll turn into a WereCare Bear and the 'WUV' will be overtaken by a thrist for 'BWOOD'!

Frightening thought.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 1 June 2005 15:45 (nineteen years ago) link

Dan Perry. He and I both have a goiter the size of golf ball, but otherwise we could not be more unlike.

Aimless (Aimless), Wednesday, 1 June 2005 15:57 (nineteen years ago) link

I don't think one exists. Frustrated/depressed artistes-slash-manual laborers who love Kristin Hersh, the Descendents and Mazzy Star apply here.

Before I even opened the thread I was gonna say milozauckerman... we're also both Texans dude!

Aaron A., Wednesday, 1 June 2005 17:43 (nineteen years ago) link

Someone around here's gotta relate to some of these!

a) Adopted a British accent when he was younger in reaction to Southern US background (and now finds it hamstrung and pretentious of him and is trying to phase it out)
b) Lacks close friends and is viewed as little more than an eccentric curio by his immediate peers and acquaintances
c) Interested in music production, post-punk/dub/shoegaze (although not entirely adhering to), anarchism (of the Emma Goldman and Voltairine de Cleyre variety), Situationism, Dadaism, minimal art, female intellectuals who aren't Ayn Rand, and more recently linguistics and structuralism
d) Very young and single, slender, tall, glasses-sporting brown-eyed brunette
e) Makes music without having any conventional gear around

Yeesh, sounds like a twisted personal.

mostly just item c tho

The Pinup Girls of YANK (Jody Beth Rosen), Wednesday, 1 June 2005 18:14 (nineteen years ago) link

I've got most of Ian's minus the accent and Southern US background, glasses, shoegaze-mention, some of the youth, the linguistics-structuralism and female-intellectuals interests and plus a couple of close friends and some conventional music-making equipment (speakers, mixer, etc.).

Me and Homo II + GuntherHeartymeal (or Bones and Dinkers, or, whatever they are calling themselves these days)

1) Share genetics. Also: parents, hometown, and a love of chips and salsa.

Booyah, I need not go further.

Jacqui Pickles (Jacqui Pickles), Wednesday, 1 June 2005 20:03 (nineteen years ago) link

We all look forward to meeting your parents, whom I'm sure I'll have loads and loads in common with. Apart from my lack of residual Greeley-stink.

nabisco (nabisco), Wednesday, 1 June 2005 20:17 (nineteen years ago) link

So far as I know, ILX contains one person who grew up where I grew up, one person who's also Ethiopian, one person who works where I used to work, and loads of people who like various stuff that I like. The best I can say is that I think Jaymc is living the kind of laid-back Chicago rock-sans-roll lifestyle I aspired to. Also bnw and I are both corny indie fuxxors with MFAs. But then so is Colin Meloy, and we're both much cooler than him.

nabisco (nabisco), Wednesday, 1 June 2005 20:23 (nineteen years ago) link

Oh, I have an MFA. Score.

Jacqui Pickles (Jacqui Pickles), Wednesday, 1 June 2005 20:28 (nineteen years ago) link

I don't. Suck.

jocelyn (Jocelyn), Wednesday, 1 June 2005 20:29 (nineteen years ago) link

Personality-wise, I recognise bits of myself in Gareth, Anna and Stevem most of all, I think. RickyT and I seem to agree on everything ever, but the person that springs most immediately to mind is N. Which is weird seeing as I've only met him twice.

- We grew up in the same part of London
- We're both half-Indian*
- We both had the same music teacher, five or six years apart
- Could both do with putting on a few pounds, frankly
- Both prone to moments of high sentimentality and complete foppish idiocy
- Regrettable tendency to wind up Barry
- Similar taste in music. And, I think, women, although I have no way of proving this
- Tottenham are still a big club

*I am right about this, aren't I?

I'm sure there are as many differences as similarities here though. It only really came to mind when Anna mentioned it once.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Wednesday, 1 June 2005 20:31 (nineteen years ago) link

actually, RickyT is about as close as I could get to someone who is a bit like me. I apologise to Rick for saying that, but I think the two things we have in common beyond some vaguely similar tastes in music and books, which is true for lots of other people, is our interest in science (his far more expert than mine) and being bi. He's one of the people I find easiest to talk to, on all sorts of levels.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Wednesday, 1 June 2005 20:39 (nineteen years ago) link

I used to have moments of sync with N way way long ago, particularly when people were talking about penises. Plus we've both had dealings with black journalists' associations. I'm less handsome, though. If someone from ILX had to visually impersonate me, the closest you could get would probably be Tannenbaum Schmidt, unless you could fatten Toby up and roast him in a tanning booth.

Ned and I both have dozens of illegitimate children scattered throughout eastern Europe.

nabisco (nabisco), Wednesday, 1 June 2005 20:45 (nineteen years ago) link

To clarify even further- I don't have anything in common with scott except for the handful of trivial things I listed up top and I think we are probably exact opposites aside from this intersection set of measure zero.

Ken L (Ken L), Wednesday, 1 June 2005 20:46 (nineteen years ago) link

I like how "parents" has become a member of the set "weird things" on this thread.
