and it's supposed to rain in Ohio tomorrow. Oh no!

Yeah, no shit. I've been checking weather in key places all day. It's supposed to rain all day, all over Ohio. Boo!

Kenan (kenan), Tuesday, 2 November 2004 04:35 (nineteen years ago) link

Dammit, if it all gets fucked up because it rains then clearly there is something wrong with the system (hint: that wouldn't be a problem in Oregon!).

Casuistry (Chris P), Tuesday, 2 November 2004 06:22 (nineteen years ago) link

Federal judges have blocked the GOP's attempts to post people to challenge voters at the polls in Ohio. Appealed to the 6th Circuit which has 6 judges appointed by each party

milozauckerman (miloaukerman), Tuesday, 2 November 2004 06:42 (nineteen years ago) link

that's already changed, the 6th Circuit cleared them to challenge.

milozauckerman (miloaukerman), Tuesday, 2 November 2004 06:51 (nineteen years ago) link

Aw man, really? Where can I read that.

Dan I. (Dan I.), Tuesday, 2 November 2004 06:55 (nineteen years ago) link

same article, they just changed the lead paragraphs from 'they can't' to 'they can.'

milozauckerman (miloaukerman), Tuesday, 2 November 2004 06:56 (nineteen years ago) link

I don't suppose there's any way it could still switch back...

Dan I. (Dan I.), Tuesday, 2 November 2004 06:57 (nineteen years ago) link

Not likely, unless they prove to be even-more blatantly targeting minorities or something, but by then it would be too late in the day.

milozauckerman (miloaukerman), Tuesday, 2 November 2004 07:03 (nineteen years ago) link

I heard on the radio last night that some people might have to queue for hours at polling stations. Is this true?? Can someone explain why this is (in the UK it never takes more than about 10 minutes). Surely having to take a long time out of one's day to vote puts people off voting and is errrmm... not not very democratic?

Or did I mishear?

Alba (Alba), Tuesday, 2 November 2004 10:06 (nineteen years ago) link

Sorry, that doesn't really belong on this thread.

I am optimistic!

Alba (Alba), Tuesday, 2 November 2004 10:12 (nineteen years ago) link

Maybe, Alba, it's because American voter turnout is usually so darn low. Today, with everyone wanting to vote, the polling stations are dealing with a much fuller capacity than they're used to.

I've never had to stand in line to vote, though this is likely to change today.

Pleasant Plains (Pleasant Plains), Tuesday, 2 November 2004 14:47 (nineteen years ago) link

I was in line from 7:35 to 8:00 a.m. to vote this morning, the lines just kept on going behind me.

Begs2Differ (Begs2Differ), Tuesday, 2 November 2004 14:58 (nineteen years ago) link

You see, that to me is completely crap. Exercising your right to vote shouldn't have to eat into your day like that. People have busy lives! Well, some do.

Alba (Alba), Tuesday, 2 November 2004 15:18 (nineteen years ago) link

I got to the polling place 5 minutes before it opened, and I had to wait an hour. The line was longer when I came out then when I got there.

In the last election, I got to the polls at about the same time and did not wait at all.

It's worth the wait to make the critical change.

dave225 (Dave225), Tuesday, 2 November 2004 15:19 (nineteen years ago) link

YOU GOT A CALL FROM BILL CLINTON????

the bluefox, Tuesday, 2 November 2004 15:20 (nineteen years ago) link

Alba, it is completely crap. The point of the Republican challenges is to slow down the voting process, especially in big Kerry-lovin' cities, and drive turnout down.

Sympatico (shmuel), Tuesday, 2 November 2004 15:30 (nineteen years ago) link

voter turnout should be huge! i heard that they were expecting almost 70% here in kentucky. so elsewhere should be earth-shattering. also, i too think that laura bush has some sort of lazy eye or a tendency to appear cross eyed. as does jenna. although she is still the hotter twin.

Emilymv (Emilymv), Tuesday, 2 November 2004 15:31 (nineteen years ago) link

YES I GOT A (prerecorded) CALL FROM BILL CLINTON!

n/a (Nick A.), Tuesday, 2 November 2004 15:31 (nineteen years ago) link

I was in line from about 8:15 to 9:05. This is the longest I've ever had to wait in line to vote, I think. They only had one voting machine. It was some kind of electronic voting machine, where a little red 'X' lights up next to the candidate you select, and then you press a button to cast the vote, but it wasn't a touch screen. I wonder if it has a paper trail.

o. nate (onate), Tuesday, 2 November 2004 15:33 (nineteen years ago) link

More importantly, does it have a sticker trail?

Alba (Alba), Tuesday, 2 November 2004 15:42 (nineteen years ago) link

Oh, (prerecorded).

the bellefox, Tuesday, 2 November 2004 16:54 (nineteen years ago) link

Clinton left a message on my machine. Didn't leave a number, though.

Pleasant Plains (Pleasant Plains), Tuesday, 2 November 2004 18:19 (nineteen years ago) link

Star 69!

Begs2Differ (Begs2Differ), Tuesday, 2 November 2004 18:31 (nineteen years ago) link

expected turnout in Oregon is about 84% currently

And I still haven't dropped off my ballot.

Casuistry (Chris P), Tuesday, 2 November 2004 20:02 (nineteen years ago) link

For the record: I am totally optimistic today!

Pleasant Plains (Pleasant Plains), Tuesday, 2 November 2004 20:05 (nineteen years ago) link

I'm surprised they're low as they are! (Then again California living skews it.)

Blogs Nudge Dow, Nasdaq, S&P 500 Lower

Just out of curiosity, does anyone know which blogs they're talking about here?

o. nate (onate), Tuesday, 2 November 2004 20:54 (nineteen years ago) link

you know, blogs. They're on the internets.

dave225 (Dave225), Tuesday, 2 November 2004 20:55 (nineteen years ago) link

Never mind, I just checked over at Slate.

o. nate (onate), Tuesday, 2 November 2004 21:01 (nineteen years ago) link

John Kerry's proved that he can take a bullet. Bush, on the other hand, jumps at the sound of a door being shut.

Pleasant Plains (Pleasant Plains), Tuesday, 2 November 2004 21:04 (nineteen years ago) link

Who are you talking to?

n/a (Nick A.), Tuesday, 2 November 2004 21:05 (nineteen years ago) link

Could Arkansas very much be 'on the table', to return to this thread's inception? And indeed Virginia, considering that an exit poll shows Bush only leading by 3% or so in North Carolina. Kerry has consistently and recently polled better in VA and AR than NC...

Tom May (Tom May), Tuesday, 2 November 2004 21:12 (nineteen years ago) link

Oh, Kyle. Forgot to say x-post.

x-p

Pleasant Plains (Pleasant Plains), Tuesday, 2 November 2004 21:13 (nineteen years ago) link

tom, where are you getting exit polls from

Ed (dali), Tuesday, 2 November 2004 21:18 (nineteen years ago) link

They are quoted in the main election thread on ILE. 400-odd posts etc. :) I am of course blissfully unaware of how accurate they may be, however. ;)

the dude on the left cos he's bigger and better able to carry signs, also he seems free from the crippling "look at me" insecurity of his republican counterpart.
