ALL OF YOU WHO DID NOT SHOW UP TO WONDERLAND TONITE = LAME.
also everybody else except for a couple of Nick's friends who showed up to wonderland tonite = lame. Not including obviously me, ally, n/a.
wtf that bar's location, milieu and clientele make absolutely no rational sense whatsoever. HEY! it's the bar in DC that has expensive beers that you have to DRIVE TO! wtf is the asylum THAT DIFFICULT?

Also no, not santana moss. randy moss.

TOMBOT, Saturday, 24 December 2005 05:52 (eighteen years ago) link

It's a good name though. How is Bar Pilar? Lame?

Mary (Mary), Saturday, 24 December 2005 08:48 (eighteen years ago) link

Okay on weeknights, kind of a toolshed on weekends.

The Saint-Ex owner claims he opened Bar P so he'd have a bar he wanted to drink in. Simpler solution: Start openly antagonizing your most annoying Saint-Ex customers until they leave. Or hire me to antagonize them for you.

Stephen X (Stephen X), Saturday, 24 December 2005 09:49 (eighteen years ago) link

Thanks for coming, Tom and Ally, it was good to see you guys and not have to act like I remembered people I don't know. Ariel and I went to Metro 29 diner after, that place is bizarre.

n/a (Nick A.), Saturday, 24 December 2005 15:02 (eighteen years ago) link

I thought the bar was fine, if fucking loud, but obv. I don't have a grasp of the location issues and scene politics.

MERRY X-MAS EVE EVERYONE I AM AT WORK BAAAAAAAH!

On the upside: I remembered to bring booze with me this time.

On the downside: this is my second attempt at coming in to work today. On my first attempt, I pulled up to my Rockville office only to realize that I left my access card hanging on the doorknob at home. No one (and I mean NO ONE) is stupid enough to be here besides me, so I had to drive back to dc to get my card to actually get into my fucking office FUCK ME!!!!

quincie, Saturday, 24 December 2005 18:59 (eighteen years ago) link

quincie, that is laaaaaaaaaaame and you owe it to yourself to get productively hammered. sorry i didn't show last night; pete and i were seeing friends in from colorado and then i had to go meet up with some beloved former coworkers at the brickskeller. i consumed several exotic russian beers that i really didn't need. but merry xmas to everybody.

Is anyone going to Midnight Mass? I feel strangely in the mood for some pomp and circumstance this year. National Gallery is sold out but Shrine of the Immaculate Conception is available. But my sister doesn't arrive tonight till around 6 so I'm not sure she'll be in the mood to worship the baby Jesus. Also, did you know that midnight mass is no longer at midnight? Both the above are at 10.30. Wash Post ran an article today explaining. There are some hold-outs though. I don't know, I think Midnight Mass is maybe the coolest thing about the Catholic Church? Do other denominations have midnight services?

Mary (Mary), Saturday, 24 December 2005 19:35 (eighteen years ago) link

poor wee quincie. do not work tomorrow!

mookieproof (mookieproof), Saturday, 24 December 2005 19:44 (eighteen years ago) link

I DO IN FACT HAVE TO WORK TOMORROW MOOKIE I R SO FUCKED!

Mary, the Episcopalians do midnight mass. Three quarters of the congregation is drunk by then, of course.

quincie, Saturday, 24 December 2005 20:17 (eighteen years ago) link

Q, that's so wrong! I think this calls for some serious workplace drinking. Then expense the cab fare home.

Stephen X (Stephen X), Saturday, 24 December 2005 20:32 (eighteen years ago) link

Fuck the Skins.

TOMBOT, Saturday, 24 December 2005 23:45 (eighteen years ago) link

It's quarter of seven on christmas eve and I'm all alone in a Rockville office park, tipsy on flat champagne. Surely I should kill myself?

quincie, Saturday, 24 December 2005 23:46 (eighteen years ago) link

I mean, is the sixth floor high enough to guarentee success?

quincie, Saturday, 24 December 2005 23:47 (eighteen years ago) link

Fuck, the windows don't open.

quincie, Saturday, 24 December 2005 23:47 (eighteen years ago) link

I mean, I'm an editor who can't spell "guarantee"--what have I to live for?

quincie, Saturday, 24 December 2005 23:48 (eighteen years ago) link

Quincie, don't do it! Harm others, not yourself!

Stephen X (Stephen X), Sunday, 25 December 2005 00:40 (eighteen years ago) link

You have so much to live for! Like after-Christmas sales! And the new season of The Wire! And John Waters!

Without you, who will perfect the recipe for panda tacos?

Stephen X (Stephen X), Sunday, 25 December 2005 00:42 (eighteen years ago) link

Hey Q, at least you don't have to go to the Doktor tomorrow at noon for labwork and probably antibiotics. Ally had to direct me from the living room sofa while I made the traditional ZUPPA DI PESCE. We are out of commission and watching Bond films on Sp!ke TV, so far our most-watched channel since we finally got cable TV back. Or rather, satellite TV. whatever.

TOMBOT, Sunday, 25 December 2005 01:58 (eighteen years ago) link

mookieproof (mookieproof), Sunday, 25 December 2005 02:59 (eighteen years ago) link

Thank you for your kind wishes--I managed to make it through the night. It is now x-mas proper and although I am BACK AT WORK (fuckfuckfuck) I am sporting this great shirt from Mr. Q:

http://www.cafepress.com/bstick.40197532

So my mood is much better. I'll be fetching my parents from BWI later this afternoon, and then the fun will really begin.

Tombot, I hope you and Ally are holding up OK. Remember: alcohol kills pathogens! Drink up!

quincie, Sunday, 25 December 2005 16:55 (eighteen years ago) link

Hang tough, Q! Hope you have a suitable bacchanal tonight.

It could be worse: Someone gave my mom an Elvis box set, so we're working our way through the gospel section as I write this. There's not enough eggnog in the world to get me through this with sanity intact.

Stephen X (Stephen X), Sunday, 25 December 2005 18:32 (eighteen years ago) link

Dudes I hit a deer (well, some dumbass in the fast lane hit a deer and knocked it straight into my windshield) on I-70 driving to my hometown last night. My car is currently sitting on the shoulder of the highway with a big old hole in the windshield and one of the side mirrors gone and glass absolutely everywhere and I think the drivers side window is cracked too, so it's all got to be replaced. What a pain. But, I feel pretty lucky that I slowed down a bit before it hit me or some truly bad shit could've happened. I only had to pick a few glass shards out of my hands. While waiting for the police & my dad to arrive I got to hang out for like half an hour watching car after car after car run over, uh, what was left of the deer. :)

Uh, what is up with churches in the DC area NOT having midnight mass? That's the biggest service of the year at the (Catholic) church I went to growing up.

dar1a g (daria g), Sunday, 25 December 2005 19:36 (eighteen years ago) link

OK so allyzay got really sick, quincie had to work, and dar1a g is hit by a secondhand ungulate and bashes her car to pieces. Obviously ladies should not stay in the DC area over the holidays!

BTW the lab, the doctor and the pharmacist each took less time than the fucking cab dispatch. Barwood taxi service of Kensington, MD, you are on fucking notice. I would have been fine with this DC Xmas weather totally blowing ass if I hadn't had to spend so much time out in it!

TOMBOT, Sunday, 25 December 2005 21:48 (eighteen years ago) link

Holy shit, Darla! Glad you're okay, and that you weren't tempted by the deer pudding.

Barwood is a pretty creepy operation whose Montgomery County monopoly status lets them blow off any standards of timely service--Now Even Slower Than the Metro Disability Shuttle!

hey, i just got a record player for christmas, where can i buy LPs? Im looking for older stuff, like 50's-60's RnB, country, rock.

oh, and go skins.

JD from CDepot, Monday, 26 December 2005 23:54 (eighteen years ago) link

JD, getcher ass on over to a) Joe's Record Paradise in Silver Spring; b) Crooked Beat in Adams Morgan; and c) Record and Tape Exchange in Fairfax. I haven't checked out Roadhouse Oldies in Silver Spring yet, but they might be worthwhile. Baltimore's got a lotta good options too.

ZR (teenagequiet), Tuesday, 27 December 2005 01:56 (eighteen years ago) link

Cd Cellar in Falls Church now has a couple boxes of records. I last went to Roadhouse Oldies 4 or so years ago, and they had a lot of expensive stuff.

Curmudgeon Steve (Steve K), Tuesday, 27 December 2005 05:41 (eighteen years ago) link

Yo.

Tombot, you still goto the Asylum?

Spink, Tuesday, 27 December 2005 14:45 (eighteen years ago) link

Not really, as mentioned above we found a place down the street with better wings and NFL sunday ticket. I wouldn't bitch about going, though, Boo the giant bartender who used to bounce at 9:30 still remembers my name.

TOMBOT, Tuesday, 27 December 2005 14:58 (eighteen years ago) link

A friend of mine works there...dont know how long he's been there, but his name is Pete. A friend of mine from Richmond. A big dude with a shaved head.

When do you wanna hang out? Wherever.

TOMBOT, Tuesday, 27 December 2005 15:03 (eighteen years ago) link

What are you guys doing for new years?

My mom is in town at the moment...not going anywhere or doing anything until the 1st I guess.

Luke ended up bailing on me Xmas eve, by the way.

Spink, Tuesday, 27 December 2005 15:04 (eighteen years ago) link

We wouldn't have been able to make it anyway, I ended up going to emergency care the next day :(

Tom's not, I don't have anything contagious. Me, yes, probably!

Allyzay must fight Zolton herself. (allyzay), Tuesday, 27 December 2005 15:17 (eighteen years ago) link

We don't know what to do for NYE. I have to work until 2230 that night, but a couple of friends of mine are going to be in town too, college buddies I've known forever. I think you met one of them, Nick, from Disco Cave Theater 3000 or whatever, if you know what I'm talking about. You may not.

I remember enjoying the Black Cat shindig two years ago.

TOMBOT, Tuesday, 27 December 2005 16:20 (eighteen years ago) link

we went to the black cat last year too, what is this "two years ago" nonsense? Of course, last year was total ass so perhaps "enjoying" was part of the equation.

Allyzay must fight Zolton herself. (allyzay), Tuesday, 27 December 2005 16:37 (eighteen years ago) link

We went through 10+ bottles of champagne, easy. Good god that must have been expensive...but I honestly dont remember.

At one point i remember at least 3 of us double fisting BOTTLES.

Spink, Tuesday, 27 December 2005 16:45 (eighteen years ago) link

That was the night Tom threw his shoe "at the window"!!! I don't know how we could've afforded all that champagne though.

Allyzay must fight Zolton herself. (allyzay), Tuesday, 27 December 2005 16:49 (eighteen years ago) link

Yeah I remember now, that was the night I yelled "nice tits!" at random people across the street as we were LEAVING the place and then we had a huge fight all the way home! Is that right? Maybe we should just stay home and get riled up at one another over stupid shit. Save money that way.

Though OTOH at least at the BC we can be sure nobody is going to drop Usher on the jukebox or upstairs so we can avoid THAT happening again.

TOMBOT, Tuesday, 27 December 2005 16:57 (eighteen years ago) link

OK seriously do I necessarily have a drinking problem if I drink around 3 alcohol units (3 beers/glasses of wine/mixed drinks) daily (as in, each and every day of the year)? Because last night (as I was working on my 4th margarita--but mom kept "taking sips" so it was really only about my 3rd) my mom and husband tried to pull some half-ass impromptu intervention regarding my "drinking too much." Note: neither of them really drinks much at all, so pretty much anything "daily" strikes them as too much, I guess. My dad was totally mum on the subject so apparently HE's not concerned.

Opinions please: Quincie, lush or not-lush?

quincie, Tuesday, 27 December 2005 17:09 (eighteen years ago) link

Remind me to spend the holidays drinking alone next year.

quincie, Tuesday, 27 December 2005 17:10 (eighteen years ago) link

gee wonder why I called you an asshole.

quincie, that's not a huge problem, it depends. A) How do YOU act, do you have erratic behaviors from drinking or mood swings? B) can you go into social situations and NOT drink if necessary? C) Are you able to stop at or before 3/5/348/whatever your limit is for being "drunk" generally? I mean from what I can tell you seem OK, I wouldn't worry.

Allyzay must fight Zolton herself. (allyzay), Tuesday, 27 December 2005 17:19 (eighteen years ago) link

I think I'm fine now--no erratic behavior, no problem being social w/o drinking (although perhaps I would often prefer to drink, e.g. when parents are visiting!).

BUT I guess I do probably have that potential to tip over the edge into "problemness"--but I'm not sure that really means I need to change anything. I mean, I've maintained pretty much the same level of more-or-less daily alcohol consumption for years and years, and almost never do anything the would qualify as "binge drinking," but am I supposed to "cut down" because I suppose there is a remote possiblility that it could become a problem?

I drink more than my parents and husband, and more than medical guidelines describe as "moderate" alcohol use (one drink daily for women--puhleez), but it doesn't seem like too much to me. But then again, perhaps I'm an alcoholic who can't judge these things!

quincie, Tuesday, 27 December 2005 17:29 (eighteen years ago) link

To me terms like "alcoholic" are almost entirely useless because they're so completely subjective. One person can have a few glasses of wine a day and they're fine; another is a wreck off way way way less than that and has a problem. Of course, the more you drink, the more likely it is to be a problem, but it doesn't necessarily follow.

Basically, I figure that if you're not hampering your ability to work, interact with other people, maintain relationships or stay healthy then you're doing as well as anyone ever is.

ZR (teenagequiet), Tuesday, 27 December 2005 18:50 (eighteen years ago) link

That is OTM. Alcoholic gets thrown around very lightly these days but to me that strikes me as something an eensy bit more serious than "Oh noes you drink more than x per day u must be a drunky." If you turned around and said, like, you sit around screaming at people out cars on a weekly basis or regularly can't make it into work or your friends started avoiding you, I mean, yeah, you have a problem but it's totally different to each person as to what that breaking point is! So I wouldn't worry about it.
