its amazing that none of this shit affects his standing at all. 46% of America is hooting and hollering as he disparages our top doctors and rails against freedom of speech

frogbs, Monday, 19 October 2020 19:01 (three years ago) link

To the extent that it doesn't become dangerous (which isn't unlikely), his increasingly-unhinged desperation will be quite beautiful to behold.

OrificeMax (Old Lunch), Monday, 19 October 2020 19:02 (three years ago) link

xpost They were literally chanting 'WE LOVE YOU!' in some rally clip I saw this morning.

Remember when 3 Doors Down played his inauguration?

Josh in Chicago, Monday, 19 October 2020 19:58 (three years ago) link

Every now and then I remember that even in the event of a humiliating defeat, for the rest of his years Donald Trump will have
secret service protection, travel privileges, (military) health care, a lifetime salary of $200,000, plus 100K annually for office expenses....

I can't even be mad at the idea of a secret service detail flanking him on his daily travel from his cell to the showerblock to the mess hall

This guy will never, ever face a consequence and will die of old age in comfort, a perfect metaphor for the society that America has allowed to flourish.

You know, Biden wants, listen, Biden wants you and your loved ones to not die prematurely. Sad!

It's a winning strategy for the votes.

Trump is always referring to "the disaster known as Obamacare." If Biden wins, he should rename it "The Disaster Formerly Known as Obamacare" in the first few months of his term, then drop that for a mysterious symbol.

clemenza, Monday, 19 October 2020 22:29 (three years ago) link

he should rename it trumpcare, just for the lols

umsworth (emsworth), Monday, 19 October 2020 22:38 (three years ago) link

Walter Draggedman (stevie), Monday, 19 October 2020 22:57 (three years ago) link

“Oh, I don’t know,” Trump replied. “Look, he’s an expert. He’s one of the experts of the world.”

i’m afraid to say there are some Trump phrases that almost make you wriggle with pleasure.

from this long dive into white house covid chaos in the WaPo.

to balance what might be seen as unseemly amusement, i thought the most telling quote in the piece was this:

Trump and many of his advisers have come to believe that the key to a revived economy and a return to normalcy is a vaccine.
“They’ve given up on everything else,” said a senior administration official involved in the pandemic response. “It’s too hard of a slog.”

that has the ring of truth to it, and it reads across to the UK (I’m normally *very* wary of drawing US-UK comparisons). There’s a sort of structural and ideological laziness, which might be summed up as ‘the state and the act of governing is too hard’ - ideology is almost the excuse for the actual cause which is just not wanting to do anything which looks too much like hard work. in the UK my view is that they don’t actually know how to do hard work, they don’t understand the levers they can pull. ‘shrinking the state’ has withered their sense of how the state works, and made them indifferent to what it can do.

Fizzles, Tuesday, 20 October 2020 07:21 (three years ago) link

Yes, good stuff, Fizzles. In the UK we've been alternating between grim workaholics and lazy offhand poshos for some time: Brown/ Cameron/ May/ Johnson. I'm not saying one is necessarily a reaction to the other but I do wonder sometimes.

That lightning storm last night (and I mean freaking ALL last night) was something else. Had no idea it was some deity or other attempting to destroy Trump's shitty building but I support the effort.

OrificeMax (Old Lunch), Thursday, 22 October 2020 15:30 (three years ago) link

also: why would a fake melania be there

president of my cat (Karl Malone), Sunday, 25 October 2020 02:43 (three years ago) link

Real Melania is in hiding preparing to turn state's evidence against him.

Donald Trump Also Sucks, Of Course (milo z), Sunday, 25 October 2020 02:44 (three years ago) link

Melania doesn't smile wide with teeth like that. Though I guess to be fair, she's always so made up I imagine it doesn't take much (or less) to make her look like someone else.

Josh in Chicago, Sunday, 25 October 2020 02:45 (three years ago) link

I care whether they're using a Melania stunt double about as much as I care that Donald used to call reporters claiming to be his own publicist. Believable, sure. In character, yes. Does it matter in terms of whether or not he's a piece of shit? Eh, not really.

It may turn out that there's a stunt Melania. It may turn out that there isn't, and it's just a weird angle or lighting or whatever.

If we press the line that it's the former, and it was the latter, then we look stupid and delusional. It's bait. If we just shake our heads at how fucked up that whole family and scene is, that's low stakes and has the advantage of being obviously true.

Fjord Explorer (Ye Mad Puffin), Sunday, 25 October 2020 03:18 (three years ago) link

I think it’s just a weird angle. It still looks kind of like her:
