Not Criterion, but I watched Siberian Mammoth last night, the doc about I Am Cuba which I missed when it screened at Film Forum, and is just out on DVD. Pretty fascinating. Cubans hated it and the USSR was too timid to show it because Cuba was too westernized. Scorsese says that had he seen the film as a student he would have been a different filmmaker. Hmmm.

I'm really curious about the Criterion "Carnival of Souls," a fave, but it's hard to justify spending $35+ on it when I bought my current copy for $3.

My DVD player did this when I hooked it to my VCR, with the VCR connected to the TV because my TV at the time had no modern inputs. Is there a VCR in the loop in your setup? Or is there some sort of setup menu that maybe you've set wrong (or not set at all)?

I wouldn't say it has much propaganda in it though (as a matter of fact it was received quite coldly in soviet mass media at the time - which was pro-government of course).

Yeah, I did. Bad experience. I can't stand the hacking/wheezing/chattering crowds at FF. But I've had DVD boots of it for a couple years now. It's possibly my favorite Melville.
