The Last Jedi because it's the trippiest, and trippy Star Wars is a good idea most of the canon leaves unexplored.

I would have to remember a thing about any of the three to feel okay about voting. There were a couple of one-named characters. Ray? Jeff, maybe? Last names are hard to invent, I get it. There was some karate at one point, the Ewoks evolved into birds, Luke sucks on a wampa's titty...let's see, what else. Oh, Darth Vader is a little boy now, Casino Planet is a thing, uhhhhhhhh Palpy done procreated? And now there's a spherical R2D2. And that's my pitch, my name is J.J. Abrams, and I hope you'll consider hiring me to direct your Star Wars films.

Force for competence, Last for being interesting, Rise for being so easy to summarize that I didn't feel the need to watch it
― wasdnuos (abanana), Wednesday, 30 December 2020 05:11 (three years ago) link
It's weird, as my interest in the sequels has waned (basically within a day of seeing any of the three installments), my interest in the Expanded Universe (and particularly the Legends material) has only grown. I won't embarrass you or myself by recounting how many SW novels/comics I've read since I saw Rise of Skywalker a year ago.
― Telly Salivas (Old Lunch), Wednesday, 30 December 2020 05:12 (three years ago) link
Last Jedi, easy. Space flying Leia and all.
Not angry about it anymore, but Rise's conclusion was fucked up and stupid.

I always thought it was unusually thoughtful of Disney to stop making Star Wars movies after the Last Jedi, to honor the one good one

Not angry about it anymore
I lied. When the big takeaway from TLJ was that anyone, regardless of their family tree, can tap into and master the force, Rise comes along and says *sike* it's genetic and fuck everyone in the universe except a very exclusive bloodline. I'm not even a die hard fan or anything, but if that's the kind of retcon die hard fans were craving, then fuck them too.
― Johnny Fever, Wednesday, 30 December 2020 05:42 (three years ago) link
I'm not a huge fan of any of these, but I like The Force Awakens okay. It kept things simple and fun.
― jmm, Wednesday, 30 December 2020 15:35 (three years ago) link
TFA over TLJ, barely. I was more intrigued by what Johnson tried to do with TLJ, but TFA has more of the SW spirit, albeit by copying large portions of New Hope. Simple and fun, yes. ROS was not a good movie but becomes terrible when you take into account how cowardly it was to undo the developments in TLJ
― Vinnie, Wednesday, 30 December 2020 15:46 (three years ago) link
It wasn't always successful, but I throw this to TLJ for at least trying. I can definitely see why it pissed off true Star Wars fans so much though.

I’m a big star wars fan and I’m never watching ROS, what stupid insulting garbage I’m also probably never watching TFA or TLJ again, no need. For this I’m having to come up with some pretty detailed criteria to break the tie - there are some very good new ideas in TLJ but the heroes just act so dumb throughout. Which I think I originally enjoyed but now that I have no interest in what happens to any of them it’s a pretty strong minus. TFA for having promise and being fun enough that I ended up seeing it in the theater three times (by myself on opening night, at a matinee the day after with coworkers, and on the weekend with my family) and not finding it tiresome.

I enjoyed all nine of the movies when I saw them but I'm pretty sure A New Hope is the only one I've watched multiple times.
― Guayaquil (eephus!), Wednesday, 30 December 2020 20:12 (three years ago) link
TFA easily my fav of these three, the only one i saw multiple times, bc it was just really fun seeing a new star wars movie on a big screen that was all about just rediscovering the star wars universe and had star wars-y lookin people doing star wars-y stuff, a total nostalgia trip but who cares. when it became more and more about the 'mystery' of who is related to who and who is gonna kiss who my interest went way down. its a frigging space fantasy bounded by the limits of wildest imagination and the most interesting thing you can give me is whether or not somebody is somebody else's uncle or some shit? outta here w/that boring stuff
― nobody like my rap (One Eye Open), Wednesday, 30 December 2020 20:27 (three years ago) link
RoS was so face-palmingly stupid and so painful to watch it utterly destroyed any remaining interest and fondess I had for Star Wars. Quite an achievement, maybe I should vote for it.
― ledge, Wednesday, 30 December 2020 20:36 (three years ago) link
Does anyone stan for that movie? There's a contrarian market opportunity there.
― jmm, Wednesday, 30 December 2020 20:39 (three years ago) link
Wouldn't stan, but I didn't find it facemeltingly awful. Didn't love a lot of the decisions and absolutely hated how it walked back TLJ's bolder moves, but in the theater it was a fun watch.
― Nhex, Wednesday, 30 December 2020 20:41 (three years ago) link
I watched RoS for the first time earlier this year and iirc my reaction was that it had some neat-looking shit in it (although I'm struggling atm to remember what exactly that shit was) and wasn't significantly worse than the other installments.
The most memorably good scenes that I can think of from this trilogy are Rey scrapping in the old Star Destroyer and fighting in the snowy forest with Kylo Ren, so I'm going to vote TFA.

To be clear, I see why Star Wars true fans were pissed off in that they were pissed the film attempted to do something rather than copy the original. The Star Wars fans I know were mostly mad that they 'ruined' Luke.

Yeah that Luke criticism always seemed dumb to me for the same reason (there’s a samurai movie influence to that too) but also so many years had passed since the last films I never got why they expected that he should be exactly the same person. Plus the nazis came back so it makes sense that he would be cynical about his earlier heroism.

I really resent that dislike for TLJ & the resultant paste of ROS is supposedly because of “the fans” - as a fan who knows fans, I know not of these “fans” and I disown them completely.

TFA is emptily competent hackwork and not completely insulting - the first time I saw it, it was exciting to see what felt like the old school style up onscreen but a second viewing revealed it to be thoroughly mediocre. what is had going for it on the second viewing, almost the only thing, were Ridley/Boyega/Driver. Harrison Ford sort of alright, Oscar Isaac pointless, Carrie Fisher unfortunately not great.
TLJ: a lot better, i appreciate the idea of the entire film being a chase scene, the production is stunning (it might be the best looking SW film aside from Empire and arguably Rogue One), Holdo maneuver the single best part of the entire trilogy and probably far too underrated as a whoa moment. it's admirable and ambitious and has a very good Mark Hamill performance. at this point i'd only call it a pretty solidly good SF movie, albeit deserving to be remembered, albeit one which was unfortunately canceled out by the subsequent shitshow --->
---> Rise of Skywalker irredeemably bad, significantly worse than almost any other film/tv series emerging from the major fan culture properties. including the hobbit trilogy in that. "Palpatine lives" is a reverse "poochy died on his way back to his home planet." it's an indictment of Hollywood that JJ Abrams has been given as much creative clout as he has, over Star Wars, Star Trek, Mission Impossible (for a minute), and obliquely the Rings of Power series. ROS was awful enough that someday they'll wipe all three films from the canon, and honestly i can't imagine anyone who wasn't around for their release will want to watch them over and over again. maybe not even once, i think they'll be steered clear.
i'm only posting about these now due to a recent re-screen with my son, who grew increasingly annoyed/perplexed throughout the last one. he's really into mando/boba/andor though.

The most insulting thing imo is that they hastily overwrote decades' worth of post-ROTJ expanded universe material with the sad fart of a newly-canonical shaggy dog. I don't think it's even a little bit of a coincidence that Disney immediately and consistently flooded the market with streaming SW content after Rise of Skywalker, a very 'no no don't look back there, look over HEEEERE!' move.
― Beautiful Bean Footage Fetishist (Old Lunch), Saturday, 12 November 2022 03:22 (one year ago) link
ROS retroactively erasing the “chosen one” element of Lucas’ Anakin story arc so a barely-there zombie emperor could be the villain in their bullshit movie is a major crime.
My son also watched the prequel trilogy and was enthralled generally. Having not seen them in ages, with fresh eyes I can say they’re so much better as a story, with a clear logical sense to it. Revenge of the Sith is a really great conclusion.

Of all the assets that came with the Star Wars franchise when Disney bought it, the one they must wish they could do without, but can't jettison without losing mucho money, are the fans who meticulously compare every detail of every new release against the canonical Star Wars universe.

xpost The canonical SW universe is relatively small now (after Disney reset the goalposts) and fairly internally consistent since it's basically maintained by Dave Filoni at this point.
