wiki the plot of face/off
imagine thinking the plot of face-off was relevant to anything, let alone to the movie face/off

FP'd myself for typo

As a kid, it used to bother me so much how Face/Off makes you hate Travolta for most of the movie (and he makes a concincing bad guy) but then at the end he gets the happy ending
― Vinnie, Friday, 1 January 2021 04:24 (three years ago) link
Youre just kitpicking now imo, i never claimed the plot was relevant (it is a cracking read tho, gets the lunacy down while maintaining a dry tone) xp
― spruce springclean (darraghmac), Friday, 1 January 2021 04:28 (three years ago) link
I was thinking of the pointlessness of a wiki entry for it mainly
screen should just show you a bunch of doves flying out of an exploding peach

Vote face/off btw, tho the rock holds together better overall this is not about competence imo its about the power with which the movie hits its high notes and the sublimity of the grace notes

This is Con Air and it's not very close

The Rock by a mile. Also Passenger 57 craps on both the other two.

The Rock
― Everything's Blue In This Whorl (Raymond Cummings), Friday, 1 January 2021 11:43 (three years ago) link
haven't seen Con Air but i found The Rock way more watchable than Face/Off, even though the latter is wayyyyyy more interesting as this big-budget dive into John Woo's movie-making psyche, and has more fun shit like the magnet prison and faces coming off. unfortunately even if i'm in the mood for its overlong picaresque storytelling, i just can't imagine wanting to sit through the incredibly creepy and unsettling stuff when Cage-as-Travolta goes home to Travolta's house and Joan Allen as Travolta's wife. so fucking icky, not a good-time action movie thing at all for me.
― Doctor Casino, Friday, 1 January 2021 15:37 (three years ago) link
Con Air is such shit. With Buscemi as a barely believable serial killer and Dave Chappelle an inmate that dies hijacking a plane

i'd probably vote for the rock here but it's also five hours long. i've only seen con air once during driving school (?) but i remember it being gloriously dumb
― mellon collie and the infinite bradness (BradNelson), Friday, 1 January 2021 15:52 (three years ago) link
Cant agree with you on mi2, all the flaws of face off and cage/travolta swapped out for midrange cruise and poundshop gerard butler
― spruce springclean (darraghmac), Friday, 1 January 2021 15:54 (three years ago) link
Con Air. Face/Off outraged me with geographic stupidity and that is all I can remember about it.
― Jaq, Friday, 1 January 2021 15:54 (three years ago) link
Checked out the wife/terrorist stuff in the plot again re face off and it says its fiction with actors, idk
Anyway the stuff with dead kid/live kid and sexy 15 yr old domjnique swain merit at least as much a mention imo

My cherished brad i saw it twice in the cinema i owe it nothing i merely suggest that it hasnt high points nor low points such that id say it was a cut above F/O
It hasnt a single line comes near travoltas selfpwn re chin

Gosh. I think The Rock is the only one of these I've seen more than once and the only one I'd watch again, even if I'm not sure I'd make it through. Definitely one of the most ridiculous car chases of all time, iirc. Con Air, pretty sure that is one of the few movies I've ever walked out of. I'm trying to recall what did it, and I want to say it was the movie leaving a little girl with Steve Buscemi (the child molester) as a sort of plot point? And this is a movie which *starts out* with Cage being sentenced to prison for being a human lethal weapon or something. I thought the movie was just too dumb and silly and slick to make multiple really ugly rape jokes. Trejo got one too, iirc. "They call me Johnny 50 because I've raped 50 women, after you I'll be Johnny 51" or whatever. Barf.

this would be the rock of they had cast ronnie barker instead of connery. but it's Face/Off as the overall lunacy matches the cage lunacy

Not sure how often this occurred in the Cage filmography but Con Air is notable for Cage being the straight man to basically absolutely everything and everyone else in this film

Woo's best American film is Hard Target, this is canon
Con Air has the greatest cast ever assembled and the only way it could maybe have been improved is if Verhoeven had directed it, just to put the icing on its homage and piss take of the action movie genre. Also he'd probably have destroyed more of Vegas.
― Uptown Top Scamping (Noodle Vague), Saturday, 2 January 2021 10:02 (three years ago) link
100% agree on hard target, lots to love in that movie. mullet, soundtrack, wilford's accent, lance h. broken arrow was a slog but HT and face off should be in the retrospective alongside a better tomorrow and bullet in the head and hard boiled etc. the michael bay movies are good but they're not stupid enough. the reason bad boys 2 is his best movie is that exuberant spanielish stupidity tempering and enhancing the nihilistic focus group cynicism that animates his work otherwise.

Easily The Rock for me. I am there for the nonsense, explosions, Cage, fun chatter (Clement and La Frenais?) etc but I truly love Ed Harris off sideways in a stern tragedy of military honour vs the state & mercenary interests.

Exactly. Harris is in a completely different movie from everyone else, and seems to have 100% internalized the idea that the villain believes himself to be the hero. He's one of my favorite actors.

Its a great role for him in context, its not like his internalised intensity is any less than cages burst variety, Connery's always-smoulder is background hum
