this is sort of counterintuitive but possibly a good general rule: if you want to let someone know in a polite/friendly way that you're bothered by something they do, it might actually be better to go off-topic and say it on a thread where they're actually doing it, rather than starting a separate discussion, because the latter seems a bit ... dramatic
