Finally!
I thought somebody would get it fairly quickly after Alba's link especially when the introductory paragraph starts "There are 52 racecourses in New Zealand, from Ascot Park at Invercargill in the South..."

Invercargill is possibly the ugliest place name I've ever heard in my life.

Truly hope the Maori take over again and call it by its rightful name, Waihōpai
The Inver- part is nice, the -Cargill part not so much.
― Authoritarian Steaks (Tom D.), Tuesday, 27 April 2021 15:53 (three years ago) link
Also it doesn't make sense unless it stands on the River Cargill, which it doesn't.
― Authoritarian Steaks (Tom D.), Tuesday, 27 April 2021 15:56 (three years ago) link
I mean, it should be called Waihōpai anyway.

Invercargill's second appearance on the thread, also appearing last April

― ignore the blue line (or something), Tuesday, 27 April 2021 16:24 (three years ago) link
Apologies for the thread faux pas.
I guess the ugliness of the name suggests some sort of context of aesthetics thing because coming from the north of England where gill means stream and living in Scotland where Inver, as Tom D. has acknowledged, Inver means river mouth, the name doesn't read badly but without that I can certainly see how it would

Notwithstanding this of course

No reason a city can't make a repeat appearance!

It's interesting, Philadelphia has a LOT of Lenape (aka indigenous) names and a LOT of Welsh and Dutch names, so I'm used to some somewhat off-kilter naming situations— for example, I had many friends who went to Bala Cynwyd middle school, and I live near the Schuylkill River. I think that the residue of the Cargill corporation sort of rubs off on Invercargill and makes it more ugly than it actually is, to my eyes and ears.

How'd you get Finland?
― a (waterface), Thursday, 29 April 2021 15:02 (three years ago) link
It was obviously (Central or Northern) Europe. Found an identical Finnish traffic sign for bus + taxi lane. Then found that bus: part of the Vainion Liikenne fleet. checked the company’s Finnish Wikipedia page: active in quite a large section of the country, but I decided to try Turku first, as it was mentioned a lot (and I was guessing it wasn’t going to be Helsinki again, because we had it not too long ago), and yes, the church tower matched Turku Cathedral, so then it was off to Google Maps – found the spot quite quickly.
textbook case, I think. this thread taught me well.

bravo. this thread, even as a mostly lurker, is wonderful
― a (waterface), Thursday, 29 April 2021 15:19 (three years ago) link
Good job. I thought it might be Finland from the signs but either https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comparison_of_European_road_signs or Turku's end of speed limit signs need updating.

Somewhere in Nevada? Bakersfield? I see those black tanker cars on road trips all the time. (Wherever it is, doesn't look very city-like!)
― Andy the Grasshopper, Thursday, 29 April 2021 18:28 (three years ago) link
That hovering thing in the front is scaffolding, so maybe somebody climbed up there for the shot?
― Andy the Grasshopper, Thursday, 29 April 2021 18:29 (three years ago) link
There's a sign in the distance between the scaffolding uprights that I thought said "Mia" on the top left, but really it's too indistinct to be sure.

Needs someone with an eye for distinguishing industrial plants. I came across this pulping place in Columbus County, WA, which looks like the right kind of setting at least:

If it was petrochemical, it would likely be a much more secure facility - but something is definitely either filling or pumping out those tanker cars on the tracks. And it's pretty green, not dried out like West Texas.
