Ah you did the math camp?

Clara Lemlich stan account (silby), Wednesday, 5 May 2021 18:55 (three years ago) link

You know it. Everybody did back in the day, except for the greatest of us all.

A Stop at Quilloughby (James Redd and the Blecchs), Wednesday, 5 May 2021 18:57 (three years ago) link

I just went there and got a degree in something. I’m not so good at math.

Clara Lemlich stan account (silby), Wednesday, 5 May 2021 19:27 (three years ago) link

The worst math camper better at math than most Hampshire students probably, which is funny

Clara Lemlich stan account (silby), Wednesday, 5 May 2021 19:27 (three years ago) link

Heh, one of the student teachers was a Hampshire student. He had a bit different angle.

A Stop at Quilloughby (James Redd and the Blecchs), Wednesday, 5 May 2021 19:35 (three years ago) link

There were a bunch of other summer things going on at the same time, Feldenkrais camp, drum majorettes, you name it.

A Stop at Quilloughby (James Redd and the Blecchs), Wednesday, 5 May 2021 19:36 (three years ago) link

...and another Top 20, barely, finish, in Classic Reggae Music.

4 out of 12 on the Ike Newtie quiz!

Tahini Coates (Leee), Wednesday, 5 May 2021 21:04 (three years ago) link

Did I tell you about Tony Orlando and the Brill Building?

A Stop at Quilloughby (James Redd and the Blecchs), Wednesday, 5 May 2021 21:12 (three years ago) link

Sorry, wrong quiz.

A Stop at Quilloughby (James Redd and the Blecchs), Wednesday, 5 May 2021 21:12 (three years ago) link

Oh, good anonymization there, Leee!

A Stop at Quilloughby (James Redd and the Blecchs), Wednesday, 5 May 2021 21:12 (three years ago) link

May I ask you what your usual threshold is for submitting?

A Stop at Quilloughby (James Redd and the Blecchs), Wednesday, 5 May 2021 22:06 (three years ago) link

Also want to remark upon some midpoint lull in submissions.

A Stop at Quilloughby (James Redd and the Blecchs), Wednesday, 5 May 2021 22:06 (three years ago) link

Looking back at my recent performance, I seem to be hovering around 6 where I can at least enter a reasonable (if not the correct) answer, though I played the Islam one despite only getting 3 correct.

My moneying has been disastrous though.

Tahini Coates (Leee), Wednesday, 5 May 2021 22:59 (three years ago) link

Sorry.

Thanks for playing, Greg and Leee!

A Stop at Quilloughby (James Redd and the Blecchs), Thursday, 6 May 2021 19:24 (three years ago) link

Got my recap in. Was quite a bit of work didn’t want to let it linger.

A Stop at Quilloughby (James Redd and the Blecchs), Friday, 7 May 2021 04:49 (three years ago) link

Anyway, that was exhausting but fun. Over to you.

A Stop at Quilloughby (James Redd and the Blecchs), Friday, 7 May 2021 12:28 (three years ago) link

Also, noticing that some of you are doing pretty well in the MLs, particularly one of you, not to jinx.

A Stop at Quilloughby (James Redd and the Blecchs), Friday, 7 May 2021 13:31 (three years ago) link

Man, some of these recaps just sit there with no replies. I think I will give some love to your Ulysses recap over the weekend.

A Stop at Quilloughby (James Redd and the Blecchs), Friday, 7 May 2021 15:16 (three years ago) link

I always write my recaps in advance.

The Newton 1DS was fun but I am really kicking myself over not listening closely enough to the Jackson 5 clip (a song I know well - to be fair it does sound exactly like "ABC").

justfanoe (Greg Fanoe), Friday, 7 May 2021 16:44 (three years ago) link

I wanted to write it in advance but ran out of road. Certainly planned quite a bit of it in advance.

A Stop at Quilloughby (James Redd and the Blecchs), Friday, 7 May 2021 16:55 (three years ago) link

I don't know if it's the done thing, but before I finished the recap I PMed some of the top finishers to congratulate them and thank them for playing.

A Stop at Quilloughby (James Redd and the Blecchs), Friday, 7 May 2021 16:58 (three years ago) link

Man, some of these recaps just sit there with no replies. I think I will give some love to your Ulysses recap over the weekend.

Aw, thanks! I was disappointed at first but given how few participated in the first place, it's understandable and the sting lessened over time.

Tahini Coates (Leee), Friday, 7 May 2021 17:27 (three years ago) link

Greg, do you know what rock song came from a musical version of Peer Gynt?

A Stop at Quilloughby (James Redd and the Blecchs), Friday, 7 May 2021 18:23 (three years ago) link

Also, I also for some reason left "In the Mood" blank even though I knew it. Does anyone else do this? Is there an LL name for it?

A Stop at Quilloughby (James Redd and the Blecchs), Friday, 7 May 2021 18:25 (three years ago) link

Wonder if I should ask the question of who we are really writing the recaps for. Even if nobody else posts, it still seems like a cheat if there is no recap at all.

A Stop at Quilloughby (James Redd and the Blecchs), Friday, 7 May 2021 19:30 (three years ago) link

I supppose I want somebody to read it eventually, some hypothetical audience but for now I guess I wrote it mostly for myself.

A Stop at Quilloughby (James Redd and the Blecchs), Friday, 7 May 2021 19:38 (three years ago) link

I know ELO did a version of "In the Hall of the Mountain King" but that's about all I know re: Grieg and rock music.

justfanoe (Greg Fanoe), Friday, 7 May 2021 20:13 (three years ago) link

Nothing to do with Grieg.

The Loneliness of the 1DS Recap Poster.

A Stop at Quilloughby (James Redd and the Blecchs), Saturday, 8 May 2021 17:12 (three years ago) link

While I am waiting to pitch my next potential 1DS maybe I will try to run an ILX POLL.

Working in the POLL Mine (James Redd and the Blecchs), Sunday, 9 May 2021 01:05 (three years ago) link

Smithing 1DS's is definitely a time consuming and pretty thankless process but it's one of my favorite things about LL. Not something I would do if I didn't find writing and tinkering with questions fun though.

― justfanoe (Greg Fanoe), Tuesday, 13 April 2021 14:47 (three weeks ago)

This was sort of exactly my experience, even though tbh TAI puts a form letter kudos at the end of the Smith's page when it's done and a few competitors did thank me. So not literally thankless, but thankless in the more general sense. But it was totally fun and I learned a ton of stuff even while or especially while writing the recap.

Working in the POLL Mine (James Redd and the Blecchs), Sunday, 9 May 2021 20:18 (three years ago) link

You appreciate the art of writing trivia questions in a much more concrete way, smithing your own 1DS, that's for sure.

Tahini Coates (Leee), Sunday, 9 May 2021 22:45 (three years ago) link

Indeed. Also keep obsessing about the one trace element of Wikipedia that crept in despite my best efforts.

Working in the POLL Mine (James Redd and the Blecchs), Sunday, 9 May 2021 22:48 (three years ago) link

One moral of the story is that people like to talk about (pop) music. Look at the Outlaw Country recap, the Classic Reggae recap, Greg’s recap. Those all have plenty of posts.

Working in the POLL Mine (James Redd and the Blecchs), Monday, 10 May 2021 00:46 (three years ago) link

You know, just more thing (hopefully), before I go gentle into the good night, but several testers and players mentioned that the (only) way they knew certain things was because of The Da Vinci Code and Neal Stephenson's Baroque Cycle. Which I didn't mind at all, mostly, because it was a like a free extra in that I hadn't thought about.

Working in the POLL Mine (James Redd and the Blecchs), Monday, 10 May 2021 13:57 (three years ago) link

I’m back, just like a bad penny that would have gotten me into hot water with Sir I.N. Good thing nobody showed me this beforehand:

Working in the POLL Mine (James Redd and the Blecchs), Monday, 10 May 2021 16:56 (three years ago) link

Apparently if you watched that, then read The Da Vinci Code and Neal Stephenson's Baroque Cycle you would be guaranteed like nine points or something.

Working in the POLL Mine (James Redd and the Blecchs), Monday, 10 May 2021 17:13 (three years ago) link

So that is my answer to why the subscription to IN > U –but not 2U! Because costume drama steampunk whodunnit more popular than modernism.

Working in the POLL Mine (James Redd and the Blecchs), Monday, 10 May 2021 17:32 (three years ago) link

In any case, I really enjoyed doing this contest, especially the recap, as usual, but I feel like I have already squeezed this lemon for all it’s worth. Already planning my next few.

Working in the POLL Mine (James Redd and the Blecchs), Monday, 10 May 2021 21:11 (three years ago) link

PPS: My naked bid for feedback of PMing selected parties that participated has worked out pretty well for me. I recommend it if it doesn't make you too squeamish.

Working in the POLL Mine (James Redd and the Blecchs), Tuesday, 11 May 2021 00:47 (three years ago) link

Greg, I see that you have written a few Alpaca Farms quizzes. I created an account there, but haven't participated in anything.

The fact that "Phoenix Coyotes" wasn't counted for "Arizona Coyotes" in the Indigenous Languages 1DS was balanced out for me by the fact that "Waylan and Madam" was accepted for "Wayland Flowers and Madame" in the LGBT ML.

jaymc, Wednesday, 12 May 2021 14:25 (three years ago) link

i missed a question in 21st century literature about the hilary mantel wolf hall series because i answered "cromwell" instead of "thomas cromwell." fine, the question specified that you needed the first and last name for that answer, and i admittedly missed that. but ... why were both the first and last name required in the first place? i know that there's oliver cromwell too, but the question wasn't based around differentiating the two. seemed picky.

na (NA), Wednesday, 12 May 2021 14:40 (three years ago) link

I think it was because people might have just guessed "Cromwell" based on the general time period, without actually knowing whether it was Thomas or Oliver.

jaymc, Wednesday, 12 May 2021 14:51 (three years ago) link

Even so, shouldn’t that be specified in the question, or would that be a giveaway?

I chickened out on Indigenous Languages, good for you doing it, will take a look soon.

Working in the POLL Mine (James Redd and the Blecchs), Wednesday, 12 May 2021 15:05 (three years ago) link

Lol, i guessed "Hilary Mantel", so that gives you a sense of how closely I am reading the questions.

I won my LGBT Rundle though!
