Black Panther being cut up for food is from Robert Kirkman's original series.

Interesting - I completely missed all those Marvel Saga series at the time

The first Marvel Zombies series was pretty good, and spin directly out of Ultimate Fantastic Four which certainly had its moments.

Not much of a a trailer (too much bang boom for me), but the brief glimpses of Kate being Kate are great.

For obvious reasons, some serious Die Hard vibes.

Disney just confirmed that all of their remaining 2021 movies will be theater only, including Eternals. Whatever, I know it's a business and a complicated situation, just annoyed that it's another industry ready to forge ahead as if the pandemic is in the rearview mirror.

a superficial sheeb of intelligence (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Monday, 13 September 2021 15:20 (two years ago) link

Well it’s not industry-wide, but I guess Shang Chi was their “experiment” and it worked.

tumblin’ dice outro (morrisp), Monday, 13 September 2021 15:25 (two years ago) link

Hard to imagine that is a big dog like Disney heads in this direction the other studios will follow, at least the ones who haven't already signed streaming also deals.

I don't know, just even more egregious from a company mostly focusing on kids movies pulling this shit when a large chunk of their target audience can't even get vaccinated.

Top Gun 2 and M:I-7 are gonna look like period pieces by the time Paramount finally puts them in theaters(currently slated for May/September(!) of next year).

tumblin’ dice outro (morrisp), Monday, 13 September 2021 15:32 (two years ago) link

Just not looking forward to telling my kid he's still not going to be able to see any of the movies he wants until two months minimum after they come out, but whatever. I'm so fucking tired of corporations pretending this shit is over.

a superficial sheeb of intelligence (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Monday, 13 September 2021 15:33 (two years ago) link

Looks like they are getting plenty of pushback on this, good. Wishful thinking, but I'd love to see some bad PR for them for this bullshit.

a superficial sheeb of intelligence (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Monday, 13 September 2021 15:42 (two years ago) link

But isn't it also a logical upshot of the ScarJo lawsuit? i.e., participants also wanting traditional theatrical releases?

tumblin’ dice outro (morrisp), Monday, 13 September 2021 15:55 (two years ago) link

Maybe? I think that was more specifically about Disney fucking her out of points/money, not necessarily that she cared about the type of release. I think if it's planned as a dual release thing and the actors get paid fairly for it, I can't imagine many outside of Christopher Nolan giving a fuck how it's put out.

But this also pulls the rug out from under Disney's line that "ScarJo was being insensitive during a pandemic".

a superficial sheeb of intelligence (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Monday, 13 September 2021 15:57 (two years ago) link

I mean, greedy corporation continues being greedy corporation non-shocker here and all, it's just annoying that a company that spends so much time marketing to young kids is being so transparently "we don't care if people get sick and die as long as the cash runs in".

a superficial sheeb of intelligence (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Monday, 13 September 2021 15:59 (two years ago) link

I hear you - just seems they'll get called out either way (as they have been, by talent, for using big releases to beef up Disney+). Obviously health is 1st priority - I wouldn't bring an unvaxxed kid to a theater either - and I see your point about kids movies specifically.

tumblin’ dice outro (morrisp), Monday, 13 September 2021 16:06 (two years ago) link

(personally, I don't think a 45- or 60-day window is the end of the world, but I know MCU FOMA is real)

*FOMO

tumblin’ dice outro (morrisp), Monday, 13 September 2021 16:08 (two years ago) link

I mean, yeah, I'm fine with waiting a month or two (it's what we end up doing with most non-kid movies, even before the pandemic), it's harder to sell that to a 10 year-old Marvel superfan though, especially when Black Widow, Mulan and Raya all set a precedent that is no longer an option.

a superficial sheeb of intelligence (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Monday, 13 September 2021 16:10 (two years ago) link

oh for a world where Marvel superfans were catered to lol

Tracer Hand, Monday, 13 September 2021 16:25 (two years ago) link

Cool dig, but my point is that this really is a kind of frustrating move for parents with kids under 12 right now. I don't think it's unreasonable to point this out without claiming poor Marvel fans are suffering.

a superficial sheeb of intelligence (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Monday, 13 September 2021 16:29 (two years ago) link

they don’t owe anyone a damn thing, is how i look at it

Tracer Hand, Monday, 13 September 2021 16:52 (two years ago) link

i mean i’m sorry it appears to be frustrating to you but yes it does sound unreasonable. the world is awash in entertainment. not everything appears 100% when you want it. 12 year olds take note!

Tracer Hand, Monday, 13 September 2021 16:56 (two years ago) link

Looks like they are getting plenty of pushback on this, good. Wishful thinking, but I'd love to see some bad PR for them for this bullshit.

Just imagine if famous creative freelancers, distgruntled audiences, and prominent elements of the trade press called out Marvel for their business practices. Such changes we would see!

bobo honkin' slobo babe (sic), Monday, 13 September 2021 18:15 (two years ago) link

sic do we just need to post a disclaimer before every single post itt that we agree with you and that Marvel and Disney have done an absolutely terrible job of paying creators for their work? no one is arguing that point with you, but you keep hammering on it anyway as if we are all viciously defending the corporate behemoth on that point. I don't understand who you are raging at by this point because, afaict, no one posting itt works for Marvel or Disney.

Also, the Hawkeye trailer looks FANTASTIC and I am pretty sure they're showing Clint with a hearing aid in an early scene, which makes me inordinately happy as close fidelity to the Fraction/Aja run with MCU caveats is precisely what I wanted this show to be.

I wasn’t thinking or saying anything about rates of pay, but since you bring it up, I’m betting Yoshida is vastly overcompensated

poster y: lightly notes once that 50 years of labour actions, lawsuits, advocacy journalism, editorials, huge petitions from major authors & fans, direct appeals from retailers at trade conferences and to distributors, &c., have tended to have consistent levels of success wrt Marvel changing their business practices

For someone who seems to think Disney and Marvel are so evil, you suddenly seem to really care deeply about making sure they maximize their investment for their 2021 slate.

a superficial sheeb of intelligence (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Monday, 13 September 2021 20:59 (two years ago) link

I think the 45 day release window is a fair enough compromise.
I really love theaters and want them to survive, and this is already bad for them, but at least the bulk of money for most mainstream films comes in the first month anyway. Nowadays you only have to wait about 90 days for physical media and often less for VOD.

Can't blame you for being annoyed about the pandemic stuff - I've managed to go to the theater the summer often only by going to sparsely attended showings at odd times.

Nhex, Monday, 13 September 2021 21:23 (two years ago) link

It's definitely not a terrible compromise and I get it, it's just a switch after being able to pay $20 for early access for other ones.

a superficial sheeb of intelligence (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Monday, 13 September 2021 21:28 (two years ago) link

How quickly we forget how they handled "Mulan," which was $30 on top of the Disney+ subscription fee.

Josh in Chicago, Monday, 13 September 2021 21:43 (two years ago) link

Oh right, that was $30. I mean, we paid it, still cheaper than three movie tickets and parking, even if we forgo snacks completely (which never happens).

I was honestly so delighted by the clear nods to Fraction/Aja run that by the end I was disappointed we got no “okay this looks bad” 😅

Larry Elleison (rogermexico.), Tuesday, 14 September 2021 20:42 (two years ago) link

It just looked like a generic action trailer to me, but I guess that’s how they’re marketing it. Hoping the actual series will have some of the comics’ offbeat charm, and not just a dog and other plot elements (but again, Kate’s characterization looks really promising).

tumblin’ dice outro (morrisp), Tuesday, 14 September 2021 21:28 (two years ago) link

Not sure if it was discussed itt or elsewhere and I'm covering old ground, but I read a couple different articles that implied this series is going to lean really heavily on the Fraction/Aja run, so I'm hoping it's more than a few nods.
