great match, would have been happy with either result but can understand fernandez’s frustration with raducanu’s “medical” time-out to bandage her boo-boo, potentially that was actually illegal tho idk the rules exactly and I didn’t have sound at the bar I was watching

From the first point that was a cracker. Unexpectedly had to pick up 14yo from a non-sleepover so the second set was watched on my phone, with police helicopters overhead (Wireless Festival just ended), walking in the dark across SE19. Home just in time for the shin graze and the medical t/o.

Really hope Fernandez wins a major soon... taking out Kerber, Osaka, Svitolina and Sabalenka and it still not being enough.

I guess the pandemic is a big part of the surprise factor here; in another timeline, the tour isn't suspended for six months, Emma R decides not to sideline tennis to finish her A-levels, and by now she's top 40 with a raft of solid tour-level results behind her. She was getting better the whole time though!

ITF rule W(3)(f):

If a player is bleeding, the Chair Umpire must stop play as soon as possible, and the Sports Physiotherapist must be called to the court by the Chair Umpire for evaluation and treatment. The Sports Physiotherapist, in conjunction with the Tournament Doctor if appropriate, will evaluate the source of the bleeding, and will request a Medical Time-Out for treatment if necessary.
If requested by the Sports Physiotherapist and/or Tournament Doctor, the Referee in consultation with the Grand Slam Supervisor or Chair Umpire may allow up to a total of five (5) minutes to assure control of the bleeding.
If blood has spilled onto the court or its immediate vicinity, play must not resume until the blood spill has been cleaned appropriately.

ok, seems like it was by the book then. taking 5 minutes, a drink break, etc seemed like a bit much from my perspective but I doubt much would have changed. a worthy winner!

Bleeding's a pretty major thing, safetywise. They have to stop play for it. And it's not like Raducanu skinned her knee on purpose. (Though that was an iconic moment, with the blood running down into her shoe. Will add to the myth-making, for sure.)

But any controversy over that kind of obscures what a hole Fernandez was in. She did have a breakpoint, but she was barely hanging on to the match at that point. Raducanu was just so fierce and precise. And fast! Both of them really cover ground. I was happy for Raducanu and sad for Fernandez, but also just enjoyed the match. Good tennis.
