I had to talk myself down from the LLedge quite a few times in the past week whilst obsessing about this

Did I say last week? It was a bit longer than that tbh

Looks like I got scooped by someone else who's smithing an RPDR 1DS -- I'm not too fussed because now I can play it and, hopefully, do well in it.

Leee Tigre (Leee), Tuesday, 26 October 2021 21:14 (three years ago) link

I’m looking forward to writing the 1DS that got accepted but can’t quite let go of the 1DS that got away. Not sure if I should just forget about it, try again next year, or write it anyway and submit to Alpaca Farm or somewhere else. Probably just the first option.

DO U SEE?

Take heart in that everyone who took part in the VU 1DS went on to create their own 1DS. I know that doesn't make real sense but bear with me.

The Commissioner should give other people just a little chance.

Am I off-base for being annoyed that Lesbians with Guitars featured no riot grrrl?

Leee Tigre (Leee), Tuesday, 2 November 2021 20:22 (three years ago) link

Probably not. I haven't looked at LL recently at all, don't know what I am missing.

Exploding Plastic Bertrand (James Redd and the Blecchs), Tuesday, 2 November 2021 20:49 (three years ago) link

I know it's early yet but I'm a little horrified by my current DE of 0.286.

A Frome of One's Own (Leee), Wednesday, 10 November 2021 17:51 (three years ago) link

lol the friend who invited me long ago currently has an incalculable defense because he's been 9-6ed twice

if an opponent ever misses against him (god forbid), it'll work in his favor tho

mookieproof, Wednesday, 10 November 2021 20:29 (three years ago) link

you think .286 is bad... i've started at .125. feel like i have completely lost my DE mojo, and i know people say it's luck but i have had consistently top-of-rundle DE for most of my LL career (im gonna chalk it up to writing a weekly pub quiz every week for the past 8 years)

Got Q2 right yesterday thanks to this thread! Least evil of the top 50 American billionaires

A Frome of One's Own (Leee), Thursday, 11 November 2021 17:26 (three years ago) link

Apparently the author of the Rolling Stone article referenced earlier this week plays in LL, and they were assigned 3 for said question.

A Frome of One's Own (Leee), Friday, 12 November 2021 22:45 (three years ago) link

Heh, hadn’t noticed that, but yeah. I track him along with his friend who also writes for them. I studied their work on the 70s Music ML when I worked on the 60s one and recently playtested the other guy’s “You’re So Vain” 1DS.

Exploding Plastic Bertrand (James Redd and the Blecchs), Friday, 12 November 2021 22:58 (three years ago) link

Both of them seem to be pretty nice, at least in my dealings with them

Exploding Plastic Bertrand (James Redd and the Blecchs), Friday, 12 November 2021 23:03 (three years ago) link

I had a strong suspicion that the KMT question would play hard yesterday, but I had the bad luck of facing an opponent with an unambiguously Chinese name.

A Frome of One's Own (Leee), Tuesday, 16 November 2021 16:44 (three years ago) link

Three straight matches getting 5 right and yet I went 1-2-0.

Nelleee Hooper (Leee), Wednesday, 24 November 2021 16:54 (three years ago) link

i knew i was gonna get relegated from rundle a last season when i got 4 straight 9(6)s and 4 straight ties

Tough breaks, continued: my opponent and I both got 4 right, but though my defense cost me the match, it wasn't unreasonable or bad, just rotten luck: they had 50% in science but got the Meitner question right (to which I gave 3) but then they got ~olive branch~ wrong.

Nelleee Hooper (Leee), Tuesday, 30 November 2021 18:18 (three years ago) link

Like, I'm on pace to smash my previous best TCA*, but here I am, 4-5-4, and sitting in 16th.

* Yeah, yeah, LL91 is probably due for a course correction sooner or later, but kvetching is part of the fun.

Don’t know how I feel about the Midseason Classic.

Goofy the Grifter (James Redd and the Blecchs), Saturday, 4 December 2021 18:10 (three years ago) link

In general, or this particular one?

jaymc, Saturday, 4 December 2021 21:12 (three years ago) link

In general. I understand there is kind of civic duty to participate, but I don’t, not usually.

Goofy the Grifter (James Redd and the Blecchs), Saturday, 4 December 2021 21:21 (three years ago) link

I don't really feel any civic duty. I suppose I just treat it as a general knowledge 1DS. I usually participate, but not always.

jaymc, Sunday, 5 December 2021 02:33 (three years ago) link

Oh wow, I came in second in my Rundle for the Midseason Classic!

I just found this interesting trivia blog. Hasn't been updated since lockdown initiation though.

tvod+ (James Redd and the Blecchs), Thursday, 9 December 2021 20:23 (three years ago) link

Also, I lost an answered due to one misspelled letter today, ERDLICH instead of ERDRICH. Should I protest or let it go?

tvod+ (James Redd and the Blecchs), Thursday, 9 December 2021 20:24 (three years ago) link

you deserved that correct answer

but it's just a fun thing, no protesting

mookieproof, Thursday, 9 December 2021 20:31 (three years ago) link

THere now. Convenience link for Scoring Review: https://www.learnedleague.com/thorsten/review.php

tvod+ (James Redd and the Blecchs), Thursday, 9 December 2021 20:32 (three years ago) link

I'd let it go.

According to the rules, correct spelling isn't required but "a 'sounds-like' guideline will be used for misspelled answers." "Erdlich" does not sound like "Erdrich."

Granted, Thorsten is sometimes more lenient than the rules, so it wouldn't have surprised me if he *had* accepted "Erdlich." But unless you know that someone else got credit for that spelling, I don't think you have much of a defense.

jaymc, Thursday, 9 December 2021 20:32 (three years ago) link

I agree that it's a fun thing, but there is a protocol in place, so I am going to practice using it this one time.

tvod+ (James Redd and the Blecchs), Thursday, 9 December 2021 20:33 (three years ago) link

The number one hit if I Google ERDLICH is Louise ERDRICH! And they do sound alike! The R sound gets buried, and R and L are related letters, as we know from Japanese, if not otherwise.

tvod+ (James Redd and the Blecchs), Thursday, 9 December 2021 20:34 (three years ago) link

They are both liquids.

tvod+ (James Redd and the Blecchs), Thursday, 9 December 2021 20:37 (three years ago) link

If I were Thorsten, I think it would be difficult to decide what counts as a "sound-alike" spelling. The line isn't always easily drawn.

jaymc, Thursday, 9 December 2021 20:40 (three years ago) link

Anyway, I have just submitted. We will see what he says.

the erdlich horror

na (NA), Thursday, 9 December 2021 21:00 (three years ago) link

the liquid consonant/"r and l sound the same" excuses are a total red herring. what it sounds like doesn't matter. the answer is in writing. all the matters is if he thinks the spelling is close enough. which it might be!

na (NA), Thursday, 9 December 2021 21:01 (three years ago) link

oh i see you're responding to the "sounds like" guideline. that's a silly guideline for a written quiz.
