It was great when they used to just have bulk uplift on a set day every week. So, so easy.

Does anybody have recommendations for driving instructors in the Glasgow area, preferably south side? I have to finally bite the bullet and learn to drive in the new year. On a very quick web search - driving lessons are expensive!!

Ward Fowler, Tuesday, 21 December 2021 10:10 (two years ago) link

I can’t recommend a driving instructor, but I can wholeheartedly recommend Celentano’s, by the Cathedral. The feasting menu is astoundingly good value at £38, and includes one of the best plates of food I’ve ever eaten (beef rump, for the record). Great waiting staff too. A++ would totally go again.

Oh, I heard about that. Must try it soon.

I can also very much recommend Chateau-X which is the latest venture by Six by Nico.

Anyone going to see Delgados at Kelvingrove bandstand in August?

I don't have a ticket but was thinking of it as I really enjoyed the Barrowlands gig.

Krakow, I might have a spare ticket - will know nearer the time, but it's quite likely

ailsa, Saturday, 6 May 2023 21:48 (one year ago) link

Thanks ailsa. Drop me a line if you do end up with a spare, in case we've not bought any in the meantime (my partner would probably come along too).

Crossposted from the thread about Gerry/Onimo from Aldo..try g___y more

Before the funeral, Ailsa and I are meeting for a beer in the scene of one of the most legendary Glasgow FAPs, the Alpen Lodge on Hope Street. So we don't go to an early morning service hanging and because it's a weeknight and we are all old it will just be a quiet few drinks and not a mad one like FAPs passing. Be in there about half 7/8 o'clock.

The Alpen Lodge, NOT ONIMONO

If anyone wants details of the funeral, shout at me

ailsa, Sunday, 28 May 2023 01:14 (one year ago) link

Oh yeah, this FAP will be on Tuesday night.

ailsa, Sunday, 28 May 2023 01:45 (one year ago) link

I can’t come up to Scotland this week any more and am really sorry to miss the funeral. I will raise a glass in Gerry’s honour, and put virtual arms around the shoulders of those of you who are going to be there x

Madchen, Sunday, 28 May 2023 07:26 (one year ago) link

Hope to make it along to the Lodge to raise a glass in memory etc

Ward Fowler, Sunday, 28 May 2023 07:34 (one year ago) link

I can't make tomorrow night, unfortunately, as we'll be over in Edinburgh. Sorry not to be able to join you.

brain (krakow), Monday, 29 May 2023 21:56 (one year ago) link

hi folks I've just this minute finished working and am absolutely knackered, so won't make it along tonight now. Apologies, and hope you have a good time. Best wishes for tomorrow.

Ward Fowler, Tuesday, 30 May 2023 17:47 (one year ago) link

It was great to see yez - If I'd had the foresight to book a hotel, I also wouldn't have run smack into kicking out time at Bruce Springsteen at Murrayfield.

Andrew Farrell, Tuesday, 30 May 2023 21:38 (one year ago) link

Good to see folk. An excellently bizarre evening with the Alpen Lodge jukebox once more delivering the mood-appropriate goods.

Ailsa see you there!! We have now got ticket and (hopefully) accommodation for the weekend.
Karkow hope you can make it - there are still tickets if helpful (slightly surprised).

I'm going to Glasgow this weekend for a gig, never been before. Is it feasible to stay way out of the centre (cheaper hotel) or would that be a bad idea?

This is Dance Anthems, have some respect (Camaraderie at Arms Length), Tuesday, 3 September 2024 12:02 (two weeks ago) link

That will be fine. I'd suggest the West End or Southside (the area around Shawlands)

If the gig is in the centre of town you can get to it easily on the subway from the west end or on local trains from the Southside.

If the gig is down by the Clyde (where the Hydro is for example), I would recommend staying in Finnieston which is part of the West End and has loads of things to do - and lots of hotels around it.

Treblekicker, Tuesday, 3 September 2024 12:38 (two weeks ago) link

Depends where the gig is and where you're thinking of staying and when you're heading back - taxis can be a nightmare and nightbuses are ridiculously limited.

ailsa, Tuesday, 3 September 2024 12:52 (two weeks ago) link

Yeah, I'd agree with ailsa that it will depend. I don't use taxis much, but public transport options can be pretty poor

brain (krakow), Tuesday, 3 September 2024 13:51 (two weeks ago) link

I live in a commuter town which runs into Glasgow and is right next to the airport and you'd think it'd be well connected and you'd be very very wrong.

ailsa, Tuesday, 3 September 2024 14:33 (two weeks ago) link

The one consolation is, black cabs are (relatively speaking, and solely based on my experience) cheaper in Glasgow than in any other big city in Scotland, never mind London.

I'm intrigued as to what this gig in Glasgow is now!

Ward Fowler, Tuesday, 3 September 2024 15:16 (two weeks ago) link

Gig is in Calton, looking at a very cheap hotel in Crookston.

I'm going to see The Yummy Fur & Lung Leg (they are both supporting Bis)

This is Dance Anthems, have some respect (Camaraderie at Arms Length), Tuesday, 3 September 2024 15:20 (two weeks ago) link

Just need somewhere cheap to sleep, don't care how crap or out of the way it is, I am used to a long commute to work every day.

Calton? Whatever next.

Defund Phil Collins (Tom D.), Tuesday, 3 September 2024 15:26 (two weeks ago) link

FWIW Saint Luke's is not too far a walk from the city centre, although admittedly it has not been strolling weather up here recently. Enjoy the gig!

Ward Fowler, Tuesday, 3 September 2024 15:26 (two weeks ago) link

Oh yeah, I forgot that's there.

Defund Phil Collins (Tom D.), Tuesday, 3 September 2024 15:29 (two weeks ago) link

If it's Crookston Hotel, that's ok as it's about five minutes walk from the main road between Paisley and Glasgow so there are buses running that way and it should be fine.

Glasgow taxis are cheap until you accidentally stray out of the Glasgow city boundaries, then they go into full blown highwaymen territory with their mysterious boundary charges which they're not meant to charge but do anyway

ailsa, Tuesday, 3 September 2024 15:47 (two weeks ago) link

Trains are pish just now, ScotRail running a reduced timetable. I'm planning attempting to get out of Greenock after a thing on Sunday night and it's pretty much impossible

ailsa, Tuesday, 3 September 2024 15:48 (two weeks ago) link

Not sure on pricing, but there's at least two or three guest houses in Dennistoun that you could look at. Definitely avoid The Tartan Lodge, but the others might be ok. That's walkable from St Luke's, which can be handy.

brain (krakow), Tuesday, 3 September 2024 18:14 (two weeks ago) link

I've booked a room for the night of the GYBE! gig to save me having to deal with late night trains back to Edinburgh

treefell, Tuesday, 3 September 2024 18:27 (two weeks ago) link

I booked a hotel within 10-15 mins walking distance for the Los Campesinos! gig when it was at St Lukes…then it was moved to the QMU and we’re now looking at. 45-50 minute walk.
