ken c (ken c), Friday, 19 November 2004 16:38 (nineteen years ago) link

No, I just play alone now, otherwise it ends in tears.

Rumpy Pumpkin (rumpypumpkin), Friday, 19 November 2004 16:43 (nineteen years ago) link

my wife typically just laughs at me when i play....i like to drive off cliffs as shortcuts.

Big Baby Bingo (Chris V), Friday, 19 November 2004 16:45 (nineteen years ago) link

that's a point, actually cars in san andreas take surprisingly little (i.e. zero) damage when they fall off 100 feet high cliffs as long as they land the right way.

ken c (ken c), Friday, 19 November 2004 16:49 (nineteen years ago) link

yep. are all the casino's open in venturas? I can only find one thats open.

Big Baby Bingo (Chris V), Friday, 19 November 2004 16:51 (nineteen years ago) link

The difference between me and my flatmate Tom is that when he fucks things up in GTA, he finds it funny. When I fuck things up, it makes me angry. So, when one of us is playing and the other is in the room, converstaions generally go:

(Tom playing)
Tom: oops, haha.
Me: FUCK! THE FUCKERS! YOU DIDN'T DESERVE THAT! SHIT!
Tom: haha.

Or

(Me playing)
Me: AAAAARGH! FUCK! SHIT!
Tom: haha.
Me: FUCKING SHUT IT!

JimD (JimD), Friday, 19 November 2004 16:51 (nineteen years ago) link

Yeah, I find things like not being able to get on my bike, when you press triangle and CJ goes running manically down the road in the opposite direction on the vehicle you want to enter, etc remarkably funny and I dissolve into giggles, whereas he's sitting there fuming giving it

"FUCK SAKE JUST GET IN THE CAR AND STOP FUCKING AROUND WHAT ARE YOU LAUGHING AT"

I think Tiger Woods 2005 is much better for his kind of temperament.

Rumpy Pumpkin (rumpypumpkin), Friday, 19 November 2004 17:42 (nineteen years ago) link

! but when your putt misses by half a centimeter!!

ken c (ken c), Friday, 19 November 2004 17:50 (nineteen years ago) link

Aaargh!

Rumpy Pumpkin (rumpypumpkin), Friday, 19 November 2004 17:56 (nineteen years ago) link

I've only been in two casinos, the others are just hotel suites.

i found something to attach to the tractor, but not sure what to do with it.

Ste (Fuzzy), Saturday, 20 November 2004 22:23 (nineteen years ago) link

I just hit a plot point that most of you have already seen. Without revealing it, it does explain a few things that made me scratch my head. Like why Big Smoke was sneaking around his garage at the beginning of "Just Business".

This game ... At least it keeps me off the streets. The literal ones, anyway.

Pleasant Plains (Pleasant Plains), Saturday, 20 November 2004 22:52 (nineteen years ago) link

did someone create a thread for remedial players yet?

i'm stuck on OG Loc, mainly because i keep trying to ride the bike up walls. should get there with a bit more practice / care but the way it's the third part of a three part mission means it takes a while to get into a position to retry.

the other thread open to me is lowrider racing but a) it tells me my driving skills suck and b) i need a lowrider and i totalled the only one i've seen.

koogs (koogs), Monday, 22 November 2004 09:20 (nineteen years ago) link

but the way it's the third part of a three part mission means it takes a while to get into a position to retry.

You saw that thing where as soon as the mission starts (at Sweet's house), you can hit right on the D-pad, and it'll skip to the start of the motorcycle bit?

It is a great mission in the sense that I kept getting further and further into it, and each time I'd get to the new bit and think "You're kidding! What a great game!" and then fuck up completely. This was missing from EG Wrong Side Of The Tracks. Also, as is always the case with everything, It took me ten retries to get as far as I did on my first attempt.

I'm still pretty remedial - still stuck in Los Santos, have to get past OG's first mission, though I haven't played it much.

(still not lovin' police)

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Monday, 22 November 2004 09:41 (nineteen years ago) link

i just finished the last LS mission and have found my interest plummeting with the sudden shift. i think i'm pissed at myself for not taking a little more time to relish my victorious annexing of all 53 gang territories. btw, anyone else completely disappointed with gang recruiting? they're so fucking stupid, all they do is stand in front of my line of fire!!!

haha yeah, that OG loc mission is really frustrating. the real epiphany came for me when i realized you can't actually gun the dude down while he's on his bike... just follow him as close as you can and try not to crash, eventually he'll get off and you'll be able to cap him. helps to have a decent bike skill lvl, of course. mostly i'm finding myself pleasantly surprised at how accessable this game is, the only missions that have given me real trouble so far were Just Biz and Reuniting the Families, and i only had to redo those a couple times (and it was fun!). just for the hell of it I popped in GTA3 today and was mortified by how prehistoric and unintuitive it was, I think the refinement of the gameplay mechanics from there to vice city to SA has made things much much more playable - the game is still challenging, but not like abusively HARD.

haha Ade, I'm playing GTA3 now too (in open defiance until GTASA drops down to $19.99).

gygax! (gygax!), Monday, 22 November 2004 17:31 (nineteen years ago) link

I got past The Green Sabre and now I don't know what to think. I'm out in the woods, far from home. I had so many more GANG territories to take over! What about Denise?! I miss my motorcycle! I still had taxi missions to do! Now I'm stuck here in the sticks taking pictures for Tenpenny. I WANNA GO HOME!

Pleasant Plains (Pleasant Plains), Monday, 22 November 2004 17:35 (nineteen years ago) link

Just made it into San Fierro. Is there another save spot at the beginning besides the one you start out at?
Also - mt. chilliad - wow

57 7th (calstars), Monday, 22 November 2004 17:36 (nineteen years ago) link

if you buy houses around then yes - there's a safehouse near chinatown and near other places where there is mission.

ken c (ken c), Monday, 22 November 2004 17:51 (nineteen years ago) link

> haha Ade, I'm playing GTA3 now too (in open defiance until GTASA drops down to $19.99).

GTA:VC should also be platinum if you don't have that.

i wasn't a fan of the first (got about 10% into it) and haven't played Vice City so we'll see how i get on with SA (it was a present - i'd've bought ratchet and clank, much more my style...)

i find it odd that i will quite happily go on a tri-state killing spree and shoot anything that moves, mow down pedestrians with a fork-lift etc but i stick to my vegetarian diet in all the food places...

koogs (koogs), Monday, 22 November 2004 17:58 (nineteen years ago) link

luddite!! my constitution is too delicate to withstand playing GTA3 again. which is kind of a pity, bcz i never even beat it :(

PP, your pain is my pain.

\(^o^)/ (Adrian Langston), Monday, 22 November 2004 18:34 (nineteen years ago) link

i bought GTA3 for $20 and was given Vice City so I'm not too concerned.

gygax! (gygax!), Monday, 22 November 2004 18:53 (nineteen years ago) link

Has anybody completed the Trucker missions? The last one is an absolute bitch.

Ste (Fuzzy), Tuesday, 23 November 2004 00:15 (nineteen years ago) link

Like I said before, I'm up in the woods. I went ahead and drove back to Los Santos. It was all changed! The gang territories from my map were gone. Why? Because the Ballas run everything now! They were all leanin' on Ryder's car on Grove Street! Messin' with me as I went to my garage and whatnot.

Thomas Wolfe was right. You can't go home again.

pp, im at the same point in the game as you! what clothes are you guys wearing?

big chaki (chaki), Tuesday, 23 November 2004 08:26 (nineteen years ago) link

stripey jumper, black rimmed specs, bald head. I look quite sensible.

Ste (Fuzzy), Tuesday, 23 November 2004 09:23 (nineteen years ago) link

did OG Loc on third try last night (turned the car over on the first two, once in the fountain in Pershing Square (how?) and once by taking a shortcut over the interstate where there was no bridge...). just gave up trying to shoot him en route and took the bike part easy.

been nice spotting LA landmarks i'm familiar with: Encounters at LAX, Westin Bonaventure, Santa Monica Pier, the 101 etc. do the following exist in the game: Bradbury Building, Ennis Brown House, Capitol Building, Griffith Observatory...?

koogs (koogs), Tuesday, 23 November 2004 11:24 (nineteen years ago) link

okay so I'm now actually having regular dreams at night about this game.
Last night I dreamt that Maxine (coronation st) had come round to my mansion for a party, then a GTA mission started. I had to drive her back to her bedroom on a sofa and avoid hitting anything. If I hit anything my "Cheap" meter went down.
Needless to say I lost the mission right at the end when I got the sofa stuck on a wall. The mission ended with a message "Is salmon good enough for you?"

Ste (Fuzzy), Tuesday, 23 November 2004 15:06 (nineteen years ago) link

Haha, Chaki. I feel so remedial since I haven't opened up Vegas and had sex with the space aliens or whatever happens in this game.

I've got gray pants, a black running shirt, an afro and beard, and shades. I was wearing a cowboy hat for awhile, but then I decided oh for crying out loud, a cowboy hat???

I met some white girl on top of a building in Blueberry last night. SHe was shooting at targets. I went up to her to talk, but she said that I was too muscled up for her tastes! What the ... ? WHERE IS THIS GIRL IN REAL LIFE?

No, no, I'm teasing. I've already got a girlfriend. AND HER NAME IS DENISE AND SHE LIKES TO DO DRIVE-BY'S!

Pleasant Plains (Pleasant Plains), Tuesday, 23 November 2004 17:13 (nineteen years ago) link

Salmon?

Pleasant Plains (Pleasant Plains), Tuesday, 23 November 2004 17:13 (nineteen years ago) link

PP, when you head back to grove street, I recommend you kill a few ballas on the street. I've been back a couple of times, and when I went on a short killing spree, my respect increased. I'm not sure who is respecting me, but somebody is showing me some love.

Is "The House":

wow I got dumped in the countryside by tenpenny and his cronies. it's lonely out there. I just met caesar's crazy friend.

The only thing missing from Cesar's crazy friend is her winning a whiskey shot contest with a Sherpa.

i found a girl on top of a roof, it was near some paper gun targets. I think she rejected me or something but now I can't seem to get her back there. Where has she gone ?

Ste (Fuzzy), Wednesday, 24 November 2004 21:57 (nineteen years ago) link

and i found another one of those Beat The Cock missions, I swam and cycled for what seemed like ages and finally cycled up to the fourth place guy and thought what the heck and decided to shoot him in the face. I got disqualified, blimey who would've thought it.

MC Transmaniacon (natepatrin), Thursday, 25 November 2004 01:00 (nineteen years ago) link

any tips on the "air raid" mission on top of Z's crappy shop? i've nothing to do apart from that to carry on & it's making me want to boot the tv out of the window.
also where's the flying school? i've found the others car, bike etc... but no plane yet.

lucifer, Thursday, 25 November 2004 12:44 (nineteen years ago) link

use the radar while doing that mission - it really helps.

the flying school will be shown to you during a later mission

ken c (ken c), Thursday, 25 November 2004 12:50 (nineteen years ago) link

although are you sure there's nothing else to do? i thought Zero's shop missions aren't really required in the main plot (i've only heard this from someone else though).
