and fuck this hipster test. but i did feel the hate when i saw the good life at the black cat a few months ago, so many glares. boy, i can't even faux-hipster it up.

Annie rules tho. shes my greatest hit.

The Black Cat, unfriendly as ever. I was hanging out in the Red Room beforehand & got quite annoyed at the numerous FAUX HIPSTERS shoving past to get to the bar who couldn't even be bothered to say "excuse me." sheesh, people! Could you just say a few words instead of physically moving me out of the way please? thanks!

Maybe writer Patrick Foster's (full disclosure: I have met him and have liked his writing for years) use of the term "shaggy faux-hipsters" was to dismiss the stereotypical unfriendly Black Cat types. He also mentioned "Pitchfork readers."

curmudgeon, Tuesday, 6 December 2005 15:16 (eighteen years ago) link

Do faux-hipsters wear faux-faux-hawks?

Stephen X (Stephen X), Tuesday, 6 December 2005 16:03 (eighteen years ago) link

yeah, these people are just flat out unfriendly. i could do without em.

JD from CDepot, Tuesday, 6 December 2005 17:36 (eighteen years ago) link

when they came for the faux-hipsters, i was silent, for i was not a faux-hipster

Zack, you magnificent bastard. I see the error in my ways.

JD from CDepot, Tuesday, 6 December 2005 17:51 (eighteen years ago) link

Jesus, Brian! Did you thank him, then kick his crutch away?

Stephen X (Stephen X), Tuesday, 6 December 2005 17:53 (eighteen years ago) link

No more crutches. He was playing with his new Blackberry since he doesn't have the government-issue one anymore.

Brian Miller (Brian Miller), Tuesday, 6 December 2005 17:58 (eighteen years ago) link

I hope it doubles as an ankle bracelet.

Were you going into a courthouse or something?

I was leaving (LAW FIRM X), which is a client of my employer.

Back to the faux-hipsters: Are the unfriendly Black Cat denizens any different than indie-rock fans elsewhere? Maybe they're just shy or insecure (but why?) or they are so afraid that they will look like jambanders or something if they loosened up?

curmudgeon, Tuesday, 6 December 2005 21:56 (eighteen years ago) link

after spending nine hours at the dc superior court today, i just got selected for a jury.

:(

mookieproof (mookieproof), Tuesday, 6 December 2005 23:06 (eighteen years ago) link

i mean, ive hung out with a lot of "jambanders", and ive heard them say enough STUPID shit to fill a Thomas Paine (im so sure ive spelled this wrong) style pamphlet, but at least those kids weren't mean, like "faux hipsters" seem to be. but who knows.

JD from CDepot, Wednesday, 7 December 2005 07:34 (eighteen years ago) link

i dunno, i just find it so hard to take those folks seriously. they don't offend me because it's like, eh, ok, you're trying to pull the snobby asshole card, but look at you! you're not cool at all! you're a fucking dork.

i do think there's a difference between the indie rock crowds in dc and those in, say, bmore or philly though. why? good question.

ZR (teenagequiet), Wednesday, 7 December 2005 15:07 (eighteen years ago) link

Ooh, sorry mookie; should've worn that Romulan battle armor.

Re indie kids, I dunno why they're more prickly here; think it's because they're so thin on the ground? But then the local hippies, goths, etc., don't seem to be so assholish. Hm.

Stephen X (Stephen X), Wednesday, 7 December 2005 15:16 (eighteen years ago) link

SMOKING BAN. FUCK YOU. SMOKING BAN. FUCK YOU.

How the fuck does the city council get off? Let's act super pissy about baseball and smoking!! Faux hipsters indeed.

TOMBOT, Wednesday, 7 December 2005 15:35 (eighteen years ago) link

You know what smoking bans do? Sell a lot of these, that's what they do.
And propane to fuel them. Welcome to motherfucking California.

That also explains the smoking ban.

TOMBOT, Wednesday, 7 December 2005 15:49 (eighteen years ago) link

During Tuesday's discussion on smoke-free legislation, the subject of the water pipe - a popular way to smoke tobacco in the Middle East and India - came up, and most council members had no idea what it was.

Council Member Marion Barry, D-Ward 8, said he had never heard of the device.

"What do you smoke in them?" said Barry, drawing a huge laugh.

Council Member Jim Graham, D-Ward 1, who was hoping to exempt the popular hookah bars from the new law, offered to take Barry to one of the two hookah establishments in his ward.

"I don't want to go," Barry said. "I have enough problems already."

Graham's amendment was delayed, and he said he would take several council members to the bars for "on-site research."

i read that there might be exemptions for "cigar bars." i bet hookah bars would get the same break. do you think theyd allow cigarette smoking in a hookah bar? probably, i id think.

http://www.smokefreedc.org/restaurants.htm

OK seriously tell me if any of these restaurants count as "restaurants" in the real actual open-after-6pm serve-more-than-one-basic-thing not-lit-with-flourescent-bulbs kind of sense?

I love how the economic hardship measure for letting businesses retain smokiness rights if they can demonstrate "significant negative impact" is viewed as a loophole by the smokefreedc douche squad

DC to embassy staff, veterans, and active duty military: Please take ALL your business to Virginia, if you haven't already.

They are all Thai restaurants.

Spink, Wednesday, 7 December 2005 16:59 (eighteen years ago) link

I love the addition of joints with "Hunan" in the name. Like anybody has ever actually been inside a "Hunan" restaurant. Those places are phone numbers with kitchens attached. The whole staff could be huffing opium 24/7 and nobody would ever know.

TOMBOT, Wednesday, 7 December 2005 17:02 (eighteen years ago) link

I like when they try to market competitively. As if their #23 has something the other place's #23 doesnt have. But they like to try to make you think that.

Spink, Wednesday, 7 December 2005 17:09 (eighteen years ago) link

Hunan #1 is way better than anything with a name like Jade Empress or China Express. Though probably close on par with China Express #21.

Allyzay must fight Zolton herself. (allyzay), Wednesday, 7 December 2005 17:11 (eighteen years ago) link

Dont forget about the versitile use of the words "Wok" and "Dragon".

Spink, Wednesday, 7 December 2005 17:13 (eighteen years ago) link

Hunan Dragon Wok Express #29 is probably the best Chinese in the entire world.

Only if their staff works shirtless in the back. Like the dudes that do my drycleaning.

Spink, Wednesday, 7 December 2005 17:15 (eighteen years ago) link

since we're kinda on the same topic, General Tsao's Chicken is completely gross. Its really just chicken nuggets soaked in spicy caramel sauce. when i worked in a chinese resturaunt, it would never cease to amaze me just how much sugar the cooks would use to make this diabetic coma.

JD from CDepot, Wednesday, 7 December 2005 17:17 (eighteen years ago) link

I've never eaten it! It sounded too important for my tastes.

eat hot noodle, forget stress!
hunan dragon wok express!
you drink tea, feeling fine!
best is number twenty-nine!
very spicy, spicy, yes?
hunan dragon wok express!
watch out, here come seaweed brine
you like? Number twenty nine!

there was never even a general tsao, if i remember correctly. when i started working at the place it was the first thing i wanted to ask my boss, and when i did he just started laughing.

chinese food is such a con.

It is better than the Steve McQueen song though. Islamic Jihad? Is that what it was called?

the one god allah and mohammed is his prophet
islamic jihad, islamic jihad!
the one god allah and mohammed is his prophet
islamic jihad, islamic jihad!

well in my dreams i'm steve mcqueen
i move so fast i can't be seen
my fingers smell like nicotine
'cause in my dreams i'm steve mcqueen

repeat chorus.

that's still a lot better than the one lyrics i found in a really old email where the chorus started with "donde estan mis pantalones? soy de alabama!"

sub-Beck.

The "best" lyrics were the ones you showed me on your old computer when we first met, you were super drunk and going on about them. One of them just listed various nationalities girls could possibly be, like, ALL of them except maybe Asian countries (I don't remember), and asked if they played guitars. I almost broke up with you on the basis of some of the songs you showed me though that's the only one that stuck in my head at all. I couldn't even figure out how you could sing it, it was so unwieldly.

I don't remember that one either, this is why I keep that thing around! That computer has important shit on it!

My day was immeasurably improved by walking past a guy at the corner of 17th & M pounding out some go-go on an electrical transformer and singing along. Really makes me miss the paint bucket guys - Mr. Longhair McReverb on the guitar outside the Dupont south metro entrance doesn't do it for me.

Brian Miller (Brian Miller), Wednesday, 7 December 2005 22:37 (eighteen years ago) link

anyone seen the steel drum guy at dupont south recently? i remember walking past him a few years ago--dressed in what can only be described as an asian warlock's outfit--playing/singing u2's "one" punctuated by occasional pointing at the sky and laughing
