thank god the picards had to go outside, at their crazy locked-down formal event, so someone could hit one of them with a car
oh no, someone is trapped in his own mind by entirely made-up trauma
they even wasted the whole thing with the hot doctor

So you’re in the third season writers’ room.
― Ned Raggett, Saturday, 9 April 2022 04:15 (two years ago) link
i thought it had a solid start! but now it needs nothing less than AP reducing the borg queen to reciting the numbers of pi
― mookieproof, Saturday, 9 April 2022 04:46 (two years ago) link
the borg queen stuff is def annoying to me and look i should be first in line for pat benatar fan service but they kept the chorus exactly the same & just changed the arrangement for the verse which annoyed me also thematically it’s kindof a halfass song choice. If you’re going to go there, GO THERE. just swing for the fences and do a bigband workup of “The Beast In Me” or fkn “Dr Hekyll and Mr Jive” or “Jugband Blues” like what are we really doing here

if you're gonna go for a 40yo pop song there's no excuse not to go for total eclipse of the heart
― mookieproof, Saturday, 9 April 2022 05:05 (two years ago) link
i was going more w split personality theme but ok
― terminators of endearment (VegemiteGrrl), Saturday, 9 April 2022 05:11 (two years ago) link
Why would someone in 2024 sing/entertain others with a Pat Benatar song from the 80s was my problem. I know the answer is "our fans are all over 50" but hey ho.
Didnt mind this ep but not a lot progressed.
― Stoop Crone (Trayce), Saturday, 9 April 2022 06:14 (two years ago) link
also mookie otm i hate this oh no, someone is trapped in his own mind by entirely made-up traumabut in general i still do like this season
― terminators of endearment (VegemiteGrrl), Saturday, 9 April 2022 06:56 (two years ago) link
I cannot imagine these series (Disco & Picard) being appealing to newcomers to the franchise.
― adam t. (abanana), Saturday, 9 April 2022 14:16 (two years ago) link
I just watched two early, generic DS9 eps in a row — one where Dax trains a floppy-haired 90s Trill with Chandler Bing’s voice, and one where Quark’s old Cardassian girlfriend turns up — and the characters have such soul and depth and wit. I miss that! That dissonance - that’s always been there - between the depth of feeling and the corniness of the presentation - seems even more pronounced, watching them now alongside the new shows.
― Chuck_Tatum, Saturday, 9 April 2022 16:05 (two years ago) link
a major problem i have with this show is that @sirpatstew's solution to playing picard-when-old is being @OLDsirpatstew and just playing picard and i don't think it works

Nice twisty little nugget was Dr. Jemison being paged, who is almost surely Mae Jemison, real-life astronaut inspired to become one by TOS and later had a cameo on TNG.
Also, Seven has had experiences with Q(s).
― Pomelo Anthony (Leee), Saturday, 9 April 2022 21:24 (two years ago) link
Hahah yeah at the Jemison moment, I was all "Hey wait, is she in this?"
― Ned Raggett, Saturday, 9 April 2022 23:02 (two years ago) link
was that a tesla that soong used to run over picard?presumably by 2024 everyone just shrugs when a tesla runs over a pedestrian due to the frequency
― mh, Sunday, 10 April 2022 00:18 (two years ago) link
lol the entire franchise is now contorted to establish musk as someone who matters in its own past history
they shd go back in time and kill baby elon (he's a baby however old he is)

omg this is boring garbage
― mark s, Friday, 15 April 2022 18:53 (two years ago) link
the ending of this episode was so pointless and annoying i liked the rest of it for the most part but just like, boring contrived earth shenanigans to drag the earth stuff out & fracture the group as much as possible interminably is the worst, i hate it every single time unless there are whales involved
― terminators of endearment (VegemiteGrrl), Friday, 15 April 2022 19:32 (two years ago) link
dragged-out time spent on earth >>>>>>>>>>>> dragged-out time spent in jlp's MIND AS A CHILD >:(

whatsapp conflab re picard
whatsapper 1: Picard has been enormously divisive amongst ST long term investorswhatsapper 1: And hint is that it is full on sliding to deridedmark s: s1 was a silly mess but it was also reasonably excitingwhatsapper 2: S3 of Picard has had a trail announcing basically all of TNG cast except for Wesley in itwhatsapper 3: I thought TNG was The Night Garden for a second which would be much better. Good old MakkaPakkamark s: i wonder a bit how much my not enjoying it is bcz i am so very spotty in TNG lore (eg there's possibly a big FIRST CONTACT (1996) callback) (as well as to the whale movie). FIRST CONTACT but its the ppl of the night garden wd be a solid twist tbf
― mark s, Saturday, 16 April 2022 13:33 (two years ago) link
except the ppl of the night garden are 💯the borg

I still think he should come back in one of these damn shows though, he's a fucking time traveller now he can come back to any of them!

raffi sucks so hard. i might even prefer neelix
― mookieproof, Friday, 22 April 2022 17:37 (two years ago) link
I don’t MIND her but her whole vibe is Ray Winstone’s character from the fourth Indiana Jones movie, the alleged friend and colleague of many years with a dynamic that forces that issue instead of reflecting it.
― Ned Raggett, Friday, 22 April 2022 17:41 (two years ago) link
i think her being a counterpoint to Seven makes her suckiness even more pronounced
― terminators of endearment (VegemiteGrrl), Friday, 22 April 2022 17:50 (two years ago) link
It was kind of dumb, but the scene where Seven tossed a glass bottle on the ground to see what it felt like was funny‘hmm yeah, that made me feel something. she’s chasing endorphins”
― mh, Friday, 22 April 2022 20:03 (two years ago) link
it was but she shd have tossed a second bottle as they left the scene and like shivered or something
― mark s, Friday, 22 April 2022 22:29 (two years ago) link
maybe at raffi
― mark s, Saturday, 23 April 2022 17:20 (two years ago) link
Q is annoying but he's right abt humans (these ones)
ears pricked up when he said "i prepared myself to be enveloped in the warm glow of memeing" (but he said "meaning", so as you were, the show remains shitpost-free)
― mark s, Saturday, 23 April 2022 17:28 (two years ago) link
Should I bother with this season? Seemed like y’all were into it initially… maybe not so much now
― Chuck_Tatum, Saturday, 23 April 2022 19:21 (two years ago) link
I think if you're willing to stop watching after episode 4, maybe, because that seems to be the traditional shark jumping point.

Not that the script was much help, but this season is at least teaching me that Brent Spiner is not a very good actor, at least when it comes to drama.
― Born Sleeepy (Nuxx) (Leee), Saturday, 23 April 2022 20:24 (two years ago) link
ditto sirpatstew imo :(
― mark s, Saturday, 23 April 2022 20:29 (two years ago) link
shouty faustian spiner is ..not greatbut i think he’s a good actor normally? having to be a robot for that long surely does something to your sense of the dramatic idk
― terminators of endearment (VegemiteGrrl), Saturday, 23 April 2022 23:04 (two years ago) link
i feel like oldpatstew is just being old & delivering lines vs being old & being picard & delivering linesits a bit like he’s going to ask when’s dinner or when will my granddaughter be visiting etci feel mean saying that bc i love himdespite everything i still kinda like this season. it’s not driving me to drink like Discovery did with its feelings
― terminators of endearment (VegemiteGrrl), Saturday, 23 April 2022 23:07 (two years ago) link
How dare you criticize THE FEELS. (This may explain a certain generational split in the fandom I've noticed, but kinda hoping Strange New Worlds is the sop for the rest of us.)
― Ned Raggett, Saturday, 23 April 2022 23:34 (two years ago) link
indeed! i am not ashamed to say i am kind of putting all of my hopes on captain pike & crew to do what disco could not. i mean there was so much unpacking they could have charged a per episode copay we shall see
― terminators of endearment (VegemiteGrrl), Sunday, 24 April 2022 00:21 (two years ago) link
yeah unfortunately i think sirpatstew may be beyond it at this point. no shame; he is 81 ffs
worried that season 3 will demonstrate that all of them are beyond it
― mookieproof, Sunday, 24 April 2022 01:16 (two years ago) link
he is 81 ffs
but the paymasters are still willing to cut the cheque and so... excelsior!
