koogs, Sunday, 12 June 2022 20:16 (two years ago) link

Got the second word pretty early, but the first not until 65.

40ish. i moved onto phone after getting the second word at guess 6 so i can't be exact

Yesterday was a bit of a slog, they'll be taking back my barely-earned physics 2:2.

But today was a hole-in-one, so I can keep my Drama CSE.

hole in one but it took a while. clipping was a bit of a head scratcher.

dear confusion the catastrophe waitress (ledge), Monday, 13 June 2022 18:38 (two years ago) link

yes, i was surprised at that. also i was looking at the things that were obviously titles, only they were australian things i've not seen and so no help. all the examples seemed a bit odd

koogs, Monday, 13 June 2022 18:41 (two years ago) link

Hole in one here too – didn't spend very long looking at it, it just seemed to spring up from my subconscious.

28 (57.14%) was thinking of music and movies first, but that didn’t work out, and then, doing my regular be-been-being-are-was filler thing, Are (blank) Being (blank)? displayed itself. well, yeah

26, slow day I did scan the redacted titles but in fairness I've barely heard of any of the non-UK ones

26 / 61.54%. was hoping it would be “pi”, but no dice, although “3”, “14”, and “π” all had results.

I got Asia (and then China/Japan) pretty quickly, but I got really stuck on jewelry when I got all of 1 hit for jade, although that did get me stone. I think I needed program @388 to point me towards computers, at which point I finally realized it was a game.

Antifa Lockhart (Leee), Tuesday, 14 June 2022 18:45 (two years ago) link

12. a bit disappointing given I figured out without guessing that it was a two letter word invented in China a few thousand years ago.

dear confusion the catastrophe waitress (ledge), Tuesday, 14 June 2022 18:58 (two years ago) link

also got it in 1

Lily Dale, Tuesday, 14 June 2022 21:23 (two years ago) link

2 - I needed that first guess ("computer") though to narrow things down, it didn't seem obvious to me at first

Convinced that this was something to do with long-chain polymers, or some class of protein that can be activated - turned on and off? and then I spent ages trying to make binary or MOSFETs work somehow... all without making a move. I should have just made a list of common three-letter abbreviations. 8, anyway.

Michael Jones, Wednesday, 15 June 2022 18:38 (two years ago) link

#70 265 61.51%

Michael, I also got stuck on chips (I wasn't about to remember MOSFETs though), and even though I got light at 46, I kept thinking it had to do with weight, not photons. And even when I followed the photon trail, I went with fiber optics, then optical devices (even though lasers didn't show up). I think "cell" (as I was filling out variations of cellular) finally pointed me in the right direction with Light REDACTED Cell REDACTED.

Antifa Lockhart (Leee), Wednesday, 15 June 2022 19:18 (two years ago) link

lol, 11. my initial thought when i saw it was for some reason maybe a shape or something, like for dice? so i tried the word "game" pretty early but didn't really check the results, as it only had two hits. but then a few guesses later i went back and saw capital-g Game followed by XXX, tried Boy, and figured it out from there

800 guesses in (a personal record, folx!) and the good news is I’m closing in ever further - I basically have everything, except for the answer, once again proving my absolute ignorance when it comes to technical+technological stuff.

complete opposite of yesterday which i saw immediately the way you sometimes do with anagrams. slightly puzzled by the "on" and "off" but anyway, was ok, but merely ok, when i got started.

so, i guessed "it is located on the coast of the ???? of ????, (part) of the Mediterranean Sea, near the (mouth)" only i had east/west and coast. and given the only thing i know about Marseille is the count of monte-cristo i looked the that in the Popular Culture section and found it. Only that was actually "The Abbey of Saint-Victor" in the "Central Marseille" section. so absolute dumb luck.

koogs, Thursday, 16 June 2022 18:20 (two years ago) link

Oh that is good going, koogs!

21 here. All those hyphens made me think of Arabic place names. I suppose I have to get better at identifying all the possible administrative sub-divisions... prefecture, my arse.

Michael Jones, Thursday, 16 June 2022 18:54 (two years ago) link

21, I figured out it was a city after 6 but like Mike was convinced it was somewhere closer to Africa or the Middle East. Wasted guesses on north, south, east and west trying to locate it in the mediterranean. I was almost led astray by the hits for football, after I guessed united and saw what looked like (and was) Manchester United.

Alba, Thursday, 16 June 2022 21:29 (two years ago) link

I was put off it being a city by it not having city in the first paragraph. Must learn to open my mind a bit on formats of these things. Prefecture my arse, indeed.

Alba, Thursday, 16 June 2022 21:31 (two years ago) link

having great fun *not* trying to solve this one. I mean, the answer became clear soon enough although I was stuck on Toulouse for a little while, but I decided not to enter it and try filling out as much of the text as I possibly could. 1317 guesses so far, and I’m still finding new things. will I get everything? no, I have other things to do (like a job lol), and I obviously wouldn’t know everything anyway. the funnest part was trying to identify the two sets of twin cities at the end. enough clues to make it doable. got ‘em all in the end, apart from the city in Togo (its capital probably), which starts with an L and probably has four letters, but my brain isn’t giving me any Togo cities at all. but it was a fun little game within a game.

Antifa Lockhart (Leee), Friday, 17 June 2022 15:46 (two years ago) link

i got it in 5, but if i had guts i coulda made it 1 or 2 - i saw the xxxxx-xx-xxxxxxx construction and thought "that middle part could be 'du'" -- like a french name -- so i guessed du, then quebec, then france, then city to confirm it was in fact a city in france. then my first guess was the answer
