Where do you want to be?

Misirlou Sunset (James Redd and the Blecchs), Tuesday, 4 October 2022 16:23 (two years ago) link

C, because that's where I'm not a bottomfeeder.

Kim Wipers - Youth in America (Leee), Tuesday, 4 October 2022 17:31 (two years ago) link

I get you.

Misirlou Sunset (James Redd and the Blecchs), Tuesday, 4 October 2022 18:01 (two years ago) link

placed second and am moving up to C, which where i ALSO think i belong!

I finished 5th, which is the highest I've ever finished in an A rundle, even though I've had eight seasons with more correct answers. Got lucky a bunch of times.

jaymc, Tuesday, 4 October 2022 20:23 (two years ago) link

Wow. Congrats!

Misirlou Sunset (James Redd and the Blecchs), Tuesday, 4 October 2022 20:27 (two years ago) link

Wp jaymc!

anatol_merklich, Wednesday, 5 October 2022 19:42 (two years ago) link

nice job!

i definitely belong in C, since i almost always end up right in the middle of the pack. i did make it up to B for a few seasons but the competition was much tougher for me there.

Start studying up on your memes and YouTubers because my Online Content minileague proposal was accepted for next year (in October)

justfanoe (Greg Fanoe), Thursday, 13 October 2022 01:08 (two years ago) link

Now that it's passed: I tried playing the Alias 1DS, having written my MA thesis on it, and couldn't answer a single question.

Fartleby the Scrivener (Leee), Monday, 17 October 2022 21:53 (two years ago) link

What am I getting myself into with the CanCon ML.

Fartleby the Scrivener (Leee), Thursday, 20 October 2022 16:02 (two years ago) link

Think I know what I got into: classic first night forfeit!

I'm in a group with this guy.

jaymc, Thursday, 20 October 2022 18:51 (two years ago) link

Wow. Is it really him? I guess you wouldn't misrepresent.

I'm doing OK in the Medicine in Pop Culture ML, but have not really been enjoying the question writing. A bunch of the questions seem to have a strained or tenuous connection between the two parts of the name. Like this one from yesterday:

Q: Duchenne's Muscular Dystrophy is an example of a disorder caused by premature codons of WHAT TYPE? This codon is musically and lyrically represented in the songs "U Can't Touch This" by MC Hammer, "I Try" by Macy Gray, and "How Sweet It Is (To Be Loved by You)" by Marvin Gaye."

A: Stop

This is not an example of medicine in pop culture. This is a common word that is used in both medical and musical contexts.

The day before there were TWO questions about medical situations whose only identified connection to pop culture was that they are frequently depicted in movies or TV shows.

And then this one: WHAT MEDICAL DEVICE, sharing a name with a song released by Marilyn Manson in 1996, can save a person's life if quickly applied by a bystander following a severe traumatic injury?

There's more of a connection there, sure -- the song's lyrics use the device (a tourniquet) as a metaphor -- but you won't find it in the way the question is asked, which treats the connection more like a superficial coincidence.

jaymc, Friday, 21 October 2022 02:58 (two years ago) link

i am also finding the writing and conceptual threading on that quiz to be tenuous.

Not to pile on but I agree with the above on this minileague, plus there has been at least one question that did not have even a tenuous attempted connection to pop culture: "In 2017, former US Surgeon General Vivek H. Murthy declared an epidemic of WHAT PSYCHOLOGICAL RESPONSE that is associated with depression and suicide?"

justfanoe (Greg Fanoe), Friday, 21 October 2022 12:18 (two years ago) link

i'm not doing that ML but i haven't been enjoying the Children's and Young Adult Bookshelf ML. it has way too many YKIOYD questions imo. these minileagues give me a lot more appreciation for the question construction skills in the standard LL competition.

na (NA), Friday, 21 October 2022 13:23 (two years ago) link

OTM. There are guidelines and rules of question construction. On a 1DS maybe you have a little more leeway since people can opt out, but if an ML is poorly constructed it can be maddening.

Hey, somebody we know won Pop Culture Physics!

Well along with a few dozen others.

lol 25-way tie for first, congrats!

Fartleby the Scrivener (Leee), Friday, 21 October 2022 21:38 (two years ago) link

Hey, a 25 way tie for first still counts as a first. I'll take it.

justfanoe (Greg Fanoe), Saturday, 22 October 2022 18:51 (two years ago) link

Sure! Also, just looked at your overall 1DS stats. Pretty impressive.

Something weird with some MLs today.

2-4-6-8 Motor Away (James Redd and the Blecchs), Wednesday, 26 October 2022 14:54 (two years ago) link

yeah, site's down sorta

Site seems like it's fine now.

The Lost in Translation ODS is a trip.

Fartleby the Scrivener (Leee), Wednesday, 26 October 2022 22:01 (two years ago) link

Enjoyed seeing a question in the Canadian Content ML about the Polaris Music Prize, which has been won by ILXors 12% of the time.

jaymc, Thursday, 27 October 2022 03:35 (two years ago) link

The Lost in Translation ODS is a trip.

Three CA, enough to get me to the 59th percentile, hah!

Fartleby the Scrivener (Leee), Thursday, 27 October 2022 19:38 (two years ago) link

Got four, messed up one money, 71st percentile. As you may know, I have a beginner’s understanding of a lot of the languages and could at the very least identify most of them but I still couldn’t quite make out what the questions were getting at.

Capital Radio Sweetheart (James Redd and the Blecchs), Thursday, 27 October 2022 19:59 (two years ago) link

And oh hey, I am still in first place in my World Cinema ML group, will see how long that lasts.

Capital Radio Sweetheart (James Redd and the Blecchs), Friday, 28 October 2022 01:16 (two years ago) link

I was cranky about the Medicine in Pop Culture ML, but I am definitely enjoying the World Cinema and Canadian Content MLs.

jaymc, Friday, 28 October 2022 01:40 (two years ago) link

I am doing poorly in Canadian Content but still enjoying it mostly.

Capital Radio Sweetheart (James Redd and the Blecchs), Friday, 28 October 2022 01:44 (two years ago) link

My 1DS was accepted! Check back in a year!

Bysshe Better Have My Money (Leee), Friday, 28 October 2022 01:46 (two years ago) link

Ha, I got one too. Around the same time as yours, I guess.

Capital Radio Sweetheart (James Redd and the Blecchs), Friday, 28 October 2022 02:02 (two years ago) link

I don't know if I am in a good mood or something, but next year's slate looks grebt to me right now

Capital Radio Sweetheart (James Redd and the Blecchs), Friday, 28 October 2022 02:05 (two years ago) link

Wish Player Tracker showed me peoples upcoming Smithings. Right now I am just poking around the page. Saw Greg's ML in there for example.

Capital Radio Sweetheart (James Redd and the Blecchs), Friday, 28 October 2022 02:25 (two years ago) link

I guess one doesn't have to submit the names of the co-smiths etc right away.

Capital Radio Sweetheart (James Redd and the Blecchs), Friday, 28 October 2022 02:26 (two years ago) link

i am also first place in my world cinema ML but today i'm playing against someone with a lifetime .916 correct answer rate so i expect to be in second tomorrow

na (NA), Friday, 28 October 2022 13:11 (two years ago) link

I am annoyed that I couldn’t quite come up with MAN WITH A MOVIE CAMERA and so just typed CAMERAMAN which was rejected, costing me the match. Still in 1st for the nonce, but would have liked that extra lead.

Capital Radio Sweetheart (James Redd and the Blecchs), Friday, 28 October 2022 13:22 (two years ago) link

Just submitted on Verdi and Inventors. Trying to train myself to take a look a little before noon at the 1DSs.

Capital Radio Sweetheart (James Redd and the Blecchs), Friday, 28 October 2022 15:13 (two years ago) link

And now Dickens.

Capital Radio Sweetheart (James Redd and the Blecchs), Friday, 28 October 2022 15:19 (two years ago) link

Surprised at under 50% get rate on World Cinema MD 7 Q1 but especially at very low get rate for Q3. Maybe it was a spelling thing?

Regex Dwight (James Redd and the Blecchs), Saturday, 29 October 2022 13:24 (two years ago) link

In some other place the phrase “low get rate” is frowned upon.

Regex Dwight (James Redd and the Blecchs), Saturday, 29 October 2022 13:25 (two years ago) link

Q3 was the only one I missed. I recognize the title, but I've never seen it, and there wasn't enough in the question to point me to that title. Based on the reference to Renoir, I thought he might have directed it, but I couldn't think or any titles that made sense. (I guessed Grand Illusion, anyway.)

jaymc, Saturday, 29 October 2022 13:36 (two years ago) link

somehow hanging onto first by my fingernails in my Cancon ML. i'm against a bunch of A-rundlers, one of whom has an 83.4% career get rate (!), but I have one advantage on them: I'm in Canada

i hope i can squeak out some more wins and put these clearly very smart people to shame

Kompakt Total Landscaping (Will M.), Monday, 31 October 2022 19:24 (two years ago) link

Forgot to submit on Before and After Rock today:(

Regex Dwight (James Redd and the Blecchs), Monday, 31 October 2022 19:28 (two years ago) link

Pop Music. Greg did pretty well.

Regex Dwight (James Redd and the Blecchs), Monday, 31 October 2022 19:29 (two years ago) link

wow missing two questions on that was enough to knock me down to 63rd percentile

na (NA), Monday, 31 October 2022 19:35 (two years ago) link

oh but one of the ones i missed was a money question, oops

na (NA), Monday, 31 October 2022 19:36 (two years ago) link
