joeks aside, the kids singing for the fourth grade recital were pretty adorable and so was the concert and I got distracted from the laughs by that.

also the nice touch of having them open by singing an antiquated, 119 year old turn-of-the-century song filled with references the kids could never possibly understand, which is par for the course with elementary school choirs.

also the performers on that pop-punk song are Turnstile, under a pseudonym, who wrote "I Don't Wanna Go on Listening" for the sketch

had to pause the Richard Brecky sketch because I was laughing too hard.

Robinson’s face is both anonymous and one of a kind. He has a big flaring dolphin fin of a nose; small, deep-set eyes that sit in little pools of shade; a warm, gaptoothed smile.

I had been warned that Robinson is deeply uncomfortable doing media.

Gee, I can't fucking imagine why.

I can only take this is small doses, way too shouty for me. I do like the bumpers between skits a lot.

There’s one disturbing undercurrent to this show that the NYT piece did not touch upon.

So many of Robinson’s characters remind me of coked up guys who corner you in a bar, impose upon you, and insist that you “owe them” something. This is what makes many of his sketches difficult for me to watch. It’s not a question of a guy who doesn’t understand cultural rules/norms. It’s more of a case of a guy who wants to dominate you and colonize your sense of reality. To repeat myself it’s a very cocaine-ish sense of reality.

I don’t have any experience with cocaine but I do have an 8 year old son and a lot of Tim’s characters remind me of him when he’s getting tired and frustrated

I’m sure Tim Robinson is sweet and shy and philosophically confused as per the NYT profile but if he doesn’t have cocaine abuse in his background I will eat my fucking hat and shoes

Lol! I do think people can change, and I don’t begrudge Tim Robinson for where he’s come from. I’ve come from a similar place (fortunately it was many years ago). I do think he’s latched onto a vibe that is real but is also very uncomfortable for those who have experienced it.

Just popping in to say this Josefa take is fucking bizarre.

I have danced with the cocaine and have hung out with cocaine people, not once did I think this show was a result or response to cocaine.

ya I mean that business seminar sketch ends with Tim pointing at the other guy saying something like "ha ha you're in trouble and I'm not"

Well there's different facets to the show that come out in different sketches, but I find his character - or his stand-in characters, e.g. the "Frankentstein's Girlfriend" character - more menacing than childlike. To me there's real anxiety involved with imagining how I would deal with these characters in real life. It's still LOL funny, don't get me wrong.

I think it's fair to assume that trace amounts of cocaine could be found on the persons of the sloppy steaks guys. I mean, they were being real pieces of shit after all.

the only obvious substance… overuse… bit in a tim robinson production I can think of is the ridiculous alcoholism in Detroiters

Tim in the "I thought a volcano erupted" sketch is literally just me circa age 11 when I realized I could get easy laughs by responding to stuff with "Did you just say (outrageous thing that they obviously didn't just say but maybe sounds a little bit similar)?" and then did it so much my mom made me promise to stop

This would have been plenty funny but was made even better by the order screen perfectly keeping up with every item he said.
