We get to endure an entire NFL offseason of ESPN cover stories with a sober looking Aaron Rodgers photographed in black and white with headlines like "Aaron Rodgers has something to prove". Complete with details on whatever experimental treatments he's undergoing to fix his achilles.

Yeah Brady was the GOAT, I mean even that final season while not great, and while disappointing, was certainly not an objectively total disaster.
― omar little, Tuesday, 12 September 2023 17:13 (one year ago) link
I think Manning is probably a good comparison, unfortunately for the Jets his Broncos phase was probably the Matt LaFleur years in GB, minus the playoff success of course. I mean a few people were sounding the alarm back in 2018 that Rodgers had regressed to basically a league average QB, but he wound up being quite a bit better than that before falling off pretty hard in that last year. I still think the Jets had reason for optimism and ultimately I think getting him was clearly the move to make, no clue what they do now, I've never really seen a team be in this position before

time to get Herschel Walker

they'll sign a vet off the scrap heap, if they keep winning (big if), maybe trade for a non-contending team's backup
next year, they'll have their first round pick which they can hopefully use to draft a qb from a potentially excellent class
― is he disgruntled adrian? (voodoo chili), Tuesday, 12 September 2023 18:21 (one year ago) link
as a number of NFL writers have pointed out though there really aren't any good vets out there, every name you bring up is someone who was genuinely terrible last time they played. I'm not kidding when I say coaxing Tom Brady out of retirement would actually be their best shot. not sure who they could trade for either, can't imagine any teams are gonna want to part with a starting-caliber QB during the first month of the season, besides the Jets don't have a whole lot of assets anyway
― frogbs, Tuesday, 12 September 2023 18:38 (one year ago) link
brady is not goiung to unretire to play behind a bad OL at age 45 or whatever
― ciderpress, Tuesday, 12 September 2023 18:43 (one year ago) link
lol yeah “hey our 40 year old QB just suffered one of the worst possible injuries four plays into the season behind our awful offensive line… wanna give it a shot?” doesn’t feel like a very compelling pitch to tom brady, sadly i think their best chance is signing an ex starter off the street like carson wentz or jameis. i think i heard someone mention that andy dalton is carolina’s back up…
― J0rdan S., Tuesday, 12 September 2023 18:47 (one year ago) link
yeah I know Brady ain't coming back just saying the veteran QB market is pretty dire right now. idk if Wentz, Jameis, Dalton, Matt Ryan, Flacco etc would actually be a huge upgrade on Zach Wilson. also theres the fact that they built their entire offense around Rodgers' game
― frogbs, Tuesday, 12 September 2023 18:54 (one year ago) link
Matt Ryan is the only one out of that group who feels like he might have at least some intangibles remaining if not the same skills.
― omar little, Tuesday, 12 September 2023 18:58 (one year ago) link
he was really and truly god awful last year for the colts. zach wilson may actually be better than him
the last (only?) true back up QB to win the super bowl was nick foles w/ the eagles. he was 28. i think the jets only hope is finding a QB who is still in his prime who might be able to get hot for a few months while trying to score a big new contract. i don't think the 40+ year old ex superstar QB is the route they wanna go
― J0rdan S., Tuesday, 12 September 2023 20:11 (one year ago) link
jameis has the most upside, he's actually the saints' backup. it would prob take an actual package to pry him. the ryan-era jets would've totally targeted taysom hill.
i would be 1000% ok with dalton, who was actually not bad in a similar-ish situation last year for the saints (18 tds, 9 int, 53 qbr, which was higher than rodgers' last year!). but again, the panthers prob want him to be a sounding board for bryce young.
― is he disgruntled adrian? (voodoo chili), Tuesday, 12 September 2023 20:16 (one year ago) link
wentz is really really bad, and a terrible locker room presence. he's the one option that i genuinely think would be worse than wilson
― is he disgruntled adrian? (voodoo chili), Tuesday, 12 September 2023 20:17 (one year ago) link
Aaron Rodgers didn't like the play-calls involving cut-blocks and expressed as much to Jets coaches, sources tell @DMRussini and @ZackBlatt.During his four dropbacks Monday, New York's tackles tried the maneuver twice — including the play he was injured on. pic.twitter.com/XlCIhlpeeK— The Athletic (@TheAthletic) September 12, 2023
there's a great still i saw of him staring down an open receiver 10 yards downfield while the left tackle executes the cut block. he had really gotten bad about holding onto the ball and not taking the easy completion which apparently is now the fault of the coaching staff (that he handpicked)

oh no just heard from doctor james andrews that aaron's ruptured achilles means he will need to be placed in a medically-induced coma til january
― is he disgruntled adrian? (voodoo chili), Tuesday, 12 September 2023 20:25 (one year ago) link
the funny thing about the cut blocking is if you see the reverse angle of the play he got hurt, the cut block was insanely pathetic. like one of the worst block attempts i've ever seen in the NFL. i think his issue was less that there were cut blocks in the offense and more than his OL is incompetent
― J0rdan S., Tuesday, 12 September 2023 20:39 (one year ago) link
apparently the Jets are inquiring about Chad Henne, I guess that's not the worst idea
Dalton probably seems like a better fit than Jameis, though idk what assets they even have to trade anymore and I get the feeling both teams are gonna highball the shit outta them knowing the situation
― frogbs, Tuesday, 12 September 2023 20:40 (one year ago) link
Matt Ryan isn't the real answer, at all, but I hate the other guys. Jameis might be better, the ceiling is decently high. Too late to pry Stafford from the Rams? Call in Colin K? Ryan Fitz? Is Jimmy Clausen still alive?
― omar little, Tuesday, 12 September 2023 22:01 (one year ago) link
yeah i think their best hope might be that the rams are a one week mirage and are actually as bad as everyone/vegas projected, but hard to imagine the rams trading him before idk week 6 or something even if they lose like 3-4 games in a row here coming up. so the jets would still have to figure out how to stay afloat w/ last year's worst QB in the league
― J0rdan S., Tuesday, 12 September 2023 22:05 (one year ago) link
The energy between Stafford and the Rams seems to be weird enough that it seems like a very plausible possibility. I think you're correct on when they would be willing to trade him though, if at all.

Who was the last quarterback to return after tearing his achilles? Couldn't think of anyone off the top of my head.

Cardinals would probably be willing to move Kyler and his contract...
― The Yellow Kid, Tuesday, 12 September 2023 22:13 (one year ago) link
Somewhere in suburbia Vinny Testeverde put on his Adidas tracksuit and went into the backyard to toss around The Duke today.
I'd kinda think Tyrod Taylor might be the most competent backup out there these days, especially since Fitzmagic retired (and he was always more of a borderline starter). I think they were talking he was the highest paid backup QB this year.
Tyler Huntley seemed to do somewhat ok for the Ravens last year at times.

not to mention, the jets have a ridiculously hard schedule over the next five weeks (@dallas, vs. new england, vs. chiefs, @denver, vs. eagles). jets are gonna need an answer sooner than the rams will be willing to make staff available

yeah this is an interesting one... i can't remember when he's supposed to be back but i feel like it's not soon enough to save their season
― J0rdan S., Tuesday, 12 September 2023 22:38 (one year ago) link
it's just a real dire situation and one that I think is without precedent in the NFL. I mean a lot of teams have been in that "if our QB gets hurt we're just screwed" situation (ever see Rodgers' backups in Green Bay?) but to reshape your entire offense and blow up your payroll for one guy only to have him suddenly go out for the whole year, maybe forever, without having even completed a pass...idk there's no playbook for that
best hope is they can scrap their way to a 3-3 record and maybe see what's available from there. or maybe Zach Wilson can actually figure something out. either way they gotta sign someone, I mean I don't think the Jets even have a backup QB right now and the way the OL is playing they might get Wilson killed next week too

“There’s a lot of people, including Jimmy Kimmel, really hoping that doesn’t come out,” Rodgers said regarding the Epstein client list, while appearing on Pat McAfee’s show, via Michaela Zee of Variety.com.Said Kimmel, on X: “Dear Aasshole: for the record, I’ve not met, flown with, visited, or had any contact whatsoever with Epstein, nor will you find my name on any ‘list’ other than the clearly-phony nonsense that soft-brained wackos like yourself can’t seem to distinguish from reality. Your reckless words put my family in danger. Keep it up and we will debate the facts further in court.”
