not that i agree but the passion and case made are 8/10 imo

i believe the criticisms actually stand for her performance in broadcast news tbph but her turn in top of the lake is another thing entirely

I have not seen much late period Damon because a lot of his movies are ones that I avoid, so fair enough if he is aging gracefully. But that's what bothers me about Cruise in Edge of Tomorrow, he's playing a character who was probably imagined by the screenwriters as 25-30 years younger than him.

HH's primness is part of the attraction in my opinion

I've always liked Hunter a lot, but I confess to finding her surprisingly dull on Succession. I'd be open to hearing why anyone would prefer Jodie Foster though--has Foster ever done funny?

do we think Jesse Eisenberg is a good actor? I wouldn't say he's bad (and we're nowhere near the Bar), but I never look forward to watching him in anything

i thought holly hunter was ok playing a little softwr than usial in field of dreams but it turns out ofc that she didnt

he's fine playing the on-the-spectrum sociopath in The Social Network

xp eisenberg is amusing, deft but extremely limited, agreed nowhere near bar but i absolutely understand why "i dont want to see him in that" might be a thing

i think he has very very good awkward timing tho, which isnt a common talent

that one about karate masculinity was good but hes maybe the worst thing in it, once youve seen his "im nasally furious" trick once its essentially played out

i like him better in straight comedy roles

He was tolerable in Zombieland, although he benefited from a good script and a strong cast that kind of left him in the dust.

There are many actors I thought I hated until I saw something that just made them click: Nicole Kidman in To Die For, Matt Damon in Ripley. Now I love them both

Not the case with Sam Neill tho. Never seen him act well. Love watching Adjani act circles around him in Possession (tho tbf this felt like part of the film’s thesis)

what do we think of (the late) Tom Wilkinson?

xp Yeah, I enjoyed Event Horizon but that was despite, not because of, Neill. Same for Jurassic Park, which should have been his star turn.

not sure Possession can be used to draw any conclusions about acting chops

I have a general fondness for Wilkinson without really remembering why, but also a general unease recalling his American accent

sam neill is perfect as sam neill in jurassic park but hes a good deal better than that in hunt for wilderpeople

Wilkinson is amazing in Michael Clayton.

I think it would have been great if at some point in either of the Jack Reacher movies someone had quoted Road House to Cruise: "I thought you'd be bigger."

Matt Damon is really good in a whole lot of stuff — the first Bourne movie, The Good Shepherd, plenty more if I gave it some thought.

He was even good in his brief appearance in Interstellar.

Michael Douglas has this tick where he sighs to get him through what he thinks is a difficult line. Annoying as hell. A bit like Julia Roberts (whom I like!) and her throat-clearing thing.
