I've ctrl-f'ed the shit out of the thread and can't find mention of Clive Owen.

Now, I think he's perfect in *Children of Men*, but could easily be convinced it's a fluke that his dead-eyed shamble was just what was needed. Maybe I'm just scarred by *Closer*.

I liked him as the drug addicted doctor in The Knick and in Gosford Park, he doesn't seem like a bad actor to me. Bad decision to do that Patrick Marber shite.

i think hes under consideration as an awful actor tbh, that one with bellucci and giamatti was i think the last movie i walked out of the cinema on

his turn in the bourne identity kind of brings him fairly high above bloom bar tho

heh! you won't be impressed that I put the screenplay of Closer into the burner during my book-burning spree last summer, then.

Closer is great and him in it.

Oof. I hated every square inch of it. It's the best part of 20 years since I've seen it, but there are certain lines I remember that make me do a kind of internal 'chucks script across room' swim in my guts. Don't make me watch it again to check!

I feel like I’ve mentioned Clive Owen in a previous thread, he sucks. I only once saw Closer when it came out and don’t care to revisit it. He sucked in Croupier, he lucked into a great film with Children Of Men but conspicuously was extremely out-charisma’d by Caine and Moore, his entire sequence in Sin City leaves me punching the couch in boredom (in part because of perennial deadweight Rosario Dawson). He always plays Brits but specifically that kinda Guy Ritchie version of cartoon Britishness. Ryan Philippe alone saved him from being the weakest link in Gosford Park

That said Owen’s been in too many things that I haven’t seen (GG nom for a doctor role? Played Bill Clinton in something else?) that I can’t totally write him off. I think I just watch dumb bad films. He’s probably great in those good cool films that I haven’t seen him in.

Can any among us truly say that they've watched the entire filmography of The Bloom? Perhaps there's a decent performance or two lurking in the archives! Sympathy for Delicious (2010), maybe. Or his 1997 role as 'rentboy' in Wilde. You never know.

Back on topic, today I cannot think of a worse actor than Jared Leto. Surely he’s adjacent to Bloom County

Surely John Wayne should be on the shortlist for this.

Limited range isn't the same as bad. Wayne knew which roles suited his ability and just about the only time he strayed into territory where he was stupidly miscast was that movie where he played Genghis Khan. Otherwise he habitually filled roles of the sort where his heroines wore beautifully tailored gingham dresses and you might find Gabby Hayes sharing a scene. In those films he was good.

The quality I like best on Wayne is listening to an actor in character.

Philippe worked in Gosford Park because the character seemed to have been written for him: a bad actor playing a bad actor. When Philippe was in everything around 98-02 or w/e I came home to see my mom watching something with him in it. I said “oh he’s such a bad actor” and she said “I’ll watch that dreamboat in anything”. His function seemed to be solely to embody white twink smoulder and he was def the ne plus ultra of that particular job

John Wayne does a great job of doing a complex bad guy in Red River - that is acting!

Bourne is not entirely my kind of thing but Clive Owen is totally the best 5 minutes of that movie

Leto: I mean it, he is the one actor whose presence is an instant exit from me. I haven’t seen him in anything recently except the new Blade Runner. I can’t watch him in anything it’s just too insulting

Also a good shout, probably named earlier if he wasn’t dead. However he also groomed a teenager while well into his thirties and I’ve always believed in speaking ill of the dead, so.

Leto was fine in Fight Club and Panic Room, sort of a nonentity in BR2046, but he didn't bother me. A hateful cult like tech guru seems appropriate for him and he didn't damage the film.

leto is terrible in numerous ways but i did think his awfulness struck a tone that fit his character and the general chordal voicings of BR2046. i also think he was fundamentally perfect as jordan catalano

however i will never watch dallas buyers club!!! hated the director (rip tho) and have no interest in leto's performance

Years ago my friend brought me some bootleg DVDs from Japan and one of them was Closer, which was dubbed into Japanese with English subtitles. I watched about 20 minutes of it and was impressed by how bizarre the dialogue was, and how experimental the whole thing seemed. Then I realized that the subtitles were from the movie The Piano. Anyway that version was Clive Owen’s finest hour.
