welp guess this means abandoning their green pledges. look it's for the good of the country

Labour’s campaign imploded. Its candidate was suspended after liking a transphobic tweet, then unsuspended for polling day. It couldn’t repeat the progressive vote it won in 2018.

Meanwhile the 2018 Lib Dem candidate stood for the Tories this time & took all his votes with him.

It's not a good look for the Labour Shadow Secretary of State for Health and Social Care to be having a pop at the NHS, is it?

djh, Tuesday, 23 January 2024 15:37 (four months ago) link

It's a great look for the only people who matter i.e private healthcare companies, financial speculators etc

wang mang band (Noodle Vague), Tuesday, 23 January 2024 15:52 (four months ago) link

Keir Starmer, John Redwood and Wes Streeting have all earnt or been donated six-figure sums from firms or individuals linked with private healthcare

who'd have thunk it?

“There are times when the Labour party is led too heavily into nostalgia,” he told The Sun. “It would be the easiest thing in the world to go into the next general election just saying ‘worst crisis in NHS history’, ‘you can’t trust the Tories on the NHS’, ‘you’ve got 24 hours to save the NHS’ and by the way here’s a nice sepia film of Nye Bevan.”

You'd kind of think he'd be able to reframe this better, wouldn't you? You'd hope he'd fucking love the idea of the NHS and be able to articulate that.

djh, Tuesday, 23 January 2024 20:21 (four months ago) link

as long as he's getting a few times his basic annual parliamentary salary from Peter Hearn + others in donations - he doesn't give a flying fuck about the founding principles of the nhs.

I’m a sensible centrist, I will be glad to see sunak & co eat shit but also glad if these utter fucking ghouls get trounced

people on twitter are pointing out that Reeves posted this only three months ago:

Today - in the midst of their cost of living crisis - the Conservatives are scrapping the cap on bankers' bonuses.

It tells you everything you need to know about this Government.

why is a party with such a huge lead in the polls flailing around so much? I guess if you were going to be cynical about it you could say that there's *technically* no contradiction between saying that the tories scrapping the cap "tells you everything you need to know" about them, and not actually reinstating the cap, but they must know it makes them look ridiculous, so what's happening? Did they actually intend to bring back the cap at the point Reeves sent that tweet, but they've made a panicky flip-flop for some reason?

soref, Wednesday, 31 January 2024 10:18 (four months ago) link

We need the Houthi militias to sort this out

xyzzzz__, Wednesday, 31 January 2024 10:19 (four months ago) link

I'm not a fan of Twitter except when it gives the likes of Rachel Reeves enough rope to hang themselves.

why is a party with such a huge lead in the polls flailing around so much?

i have to assume that they are simply fucking around for the hell of it, nothing else makes sense

it's just baffling, like i get they're awful and truly just want to do awful tory policies, but why not just decide on the evil tory policies you're doing and stick to it instead of constantly announcing & un-announcing policies, or announcing policies they criticised only months ago. maybe donors are fucking with them behind the scenes and constantly putting pressure on contradictory parts of their agenda or something? but even that wouldn't explain it really

ufo, Wednesday, 31 January 2024 11:49 (four months ago) link

like the tories have fucked up so bad that labour don't really need to even announce much at all to win a landslide victory so i don't know why they're bothering with having policies at all if they're having so much trouble deciding on them

ufo, Wednesday, 31 January 2024 11:51 (four months ago) link

Probably a result of trying to be all things to all people, but also a result of being a shower of cunts

wang mang band (Noodle Vague), Wednesday, 31 January 2024 12:56 (four months ago) link

Probably also a number of competing power bases in the cabinet coalescing around Starmer, Reeves, Streeting, Miliband (don't laugh), all giving out mixed signals to the journos and doing their best to fuck each other over.

vodkaitamin effrtvescent (calzino), Monday, 5 February 2024 20:22 (four months ago) link

pinch of salt, maybe? but this is turning into the laugh riot of the year already

🚨 NEW: I am told it is 'armageddon' in Starmer's office and things have gone 'nuclear'. One source tells me there is massive kick back against the suspension of PPC Graham Jones and claimed it was orchestrated by 'pro Isreal right wing groups' embedded in the party.

I would like to clarify that Labour did not suspend @KateOsamor for antisemitic remarks, it suspended her for saying Gaza should be remembered as a genocide on Holocaust Memorial Day. I apologise to Ms Osamor for the error. https://t.co/43dJnT93Kh

The fact that no leftwing mps have been caught in this weeks crossfire is extremely annoying to Akehurst and co, so they are now briefing this kind of shit:

The Times suggesting 9 MPs have Starmer "worried" because they are critics of Israel ( not "antisemitic" despite the hints): We are about to watch a whole load more war crimes in Gaza. The Times is suggesting getting rid of witnesses who might complain https://t.co/gzlTA6FjXC pic.twitter.com/KQ8bxhvXfG

It struck me that this paragraph from a Guardian article could be about literally any policy area.

Labour has not clarified if it would roll out such measures in government, if the Conservatives fail to do so. But Lucy Powell, the shadow Commons leader, said “the government should stop dragging their feet and do so without delay”

AlanSmithee, Saturday, 17 February 2024 11:56 (three months ago) link

Yep put it on their tombstone

Humanitarian Pause (Tracer Hand), Saturday, 17 February 2024 12:03 (three months ago) link

I'm hoping that getting an NHS dentist (and not one that is 40 miles away) is not going be such an impossibility when the Tories are ditched. That's literally the only thing I can think of that MIGHT improve by the slightest modicum under a Labour govt. And even so I'm still highly doubtful. Even if a very good NHS dentist policy was unveiled by Starmer when the GE is here, you can't really trust what such a bad actor/serial liar says.
